then what it is?
Shop balls!
Search the prior shop small deals.
HSBC give 2% back anywhere, any time. I won't bother with this.
true. looking back at 2017, shop $20 get $10 statement balance, up to 5 times.
Then, deals these years are like nothing. Also lots of small business like cash, and 5% to 10% discount if you pay cash.
Sure it is not as good as previous shop small deals. But to compare it with HSBC is a stretch as amex plat already gives a base 1.125% cashback. This adds an extra 2.5%, so 3.625% all up.
@xsacha: Yeah, it's just the HSBC, ING and whatever else points earning card is guaranteed at any location, with no chance of merchant charges (except Aldi).
Vs this which you need to get the right location and hope it tracks.Get it wrong and you get hit with a ~2.2% surcharge and lose any gain.
As a 'promo" ..well…..
Is it me or is this a really crap offer lol
I reckon it's pretty easy to achieve. No harm adding this offer to your amex card.
The problem is there are other cards that give better returns, and this isn't statement credits, its AMEX points…
Not to mention potentially higher surcharges for AMEX.its AMEX points…
It's Velocity points for me.
Amex points are directly and instantly transferable to statement credits. 2 points per 1 cent. So this is 3.65% cashback for platinum as statement credit if you wish
spend $100 and get 200+500=700 points=$3.5… 3.5% return and there is a chance it does't get tracked. seriously AMEX?
Not to mention there is usually a higher card surcharge for AMEX as well at some of these shops.
Shop small locations are not meant to have a surcharge….offer still sucks though.
Shop small became so small
RIP cashback days…
The golden day: Spend $20, get $10 back, up to 10 times.
Per card as well. I ended up with nearly $1k loaded onto a Myki from this.
50c per trip in Qld hee
The worst shop small offer ever, totally pathetic
1000 points wow, not even $10 of value
I probably end up spending it anyway without trying, but it's really shit
Won't be supporting it. Actually good time to look at cancelling cos AMEX hardly has any worthwhile benefits now.
I'm the opposite. I'm trying to put more transactions though Amex where possible (ie. when without surcharge) compared with my regular credit card (Bankwest Platinum MC)
Amex has zero annual fee, delivers better rewards points, has a longer interest-free period, and has occasional good Offers.
What Amex card is $0 annual fees and have good reward points?
I have the Amex Essentials card, I'm not saying that the rewards points are great or even good, but the yield per $1 spent is better than what I get with my Bankwest card.
maximum of 1,000 Bonus Points ~ 500 Qantas points
🤣😆🤣😂🤣 I can’t believe how pathetic Amex has become these days
1,000 AMEX points is worth AU$ 5
I guess get used to crappy offers since RBA is goong to scrap card transaction fees, rewards would be hit the most.
First they came for our retention offers, now they're coming for our points.
Probably the end of AMEX entirely I recon.
this shop small is the worst i've seen :/
Saved the offer anyway, since i do use my card a lot at small merchants
No harm. But won't go out of my way for it either.
There is a chance those small shops using Zeller or Square may not track properly as a "small" shop…
Incidentally, does anybody know for sure:
1. Do shops using Zeller count "properly" when it comes to designations of "small" or "restaurant"?
2. Same question for those using Square terminals.I have a feeling Zeller/Square counts as "payment processor" and so paying using those terminals often don't qualify for specifc industry target offers. Happy to be corrected.
The Amex site has a list of businesses eligibile for this promotion so I wouldn't think that use of Square etc would matter.
You could be right.
But I recently used Amex at a small restaurant during the "Dining" offer a couple of months ago. They had two payment terminals. One looked like a usual "bank" type terminal. One was a "Square-esque" type. I went to that restaurant many many times during the promotion. Only when I paid using the "bank" type machine did I get the cashback offer/s. The other one didn't.
Just a PSA FYI.
Indeed, they were the best times, then getting the you have been excluded letter, and then being let back in and paying bills in 0.01 or $1 increments :D
I got close to a million points from that promo :)
This reminds me I need to get my car serviced this month, so this will be a decent bonus
What a joke. 1000 points = $5 cash value lol
Can you still use the points in PayPal?
ozbagain needs a laugh react in addition to upvote and downvote buttons
What a joke, free $10 at least I guess.
…If you spend $400.. I guess it's a 2.5% discount … basically an AMEX processing fee.
Finally closed my Amex Explorer after 4 years. No good offers, these days.
Search for the businesses which are participating in this "Shop Small" promotion

Definitely not worth it anymore. Only one coffee shop near me that I occasionally use, and just two shops in the whole of Southland shopping centre, neither of which I need. Like others, I used to do well out of this yearly promotion in earlier years, especially with our local chemist where I got my scripts filled. Now it's just gone to the dogs and totally worthless. I guess a lot of shops have given it away as it wasn't worthwhile for them to participate.
That's not shop small???
