I'll be going for the 12 Pro Max. It's a decent upgrade from the X albeit not revolutionary. Love the blue, larger screen, the redefined shape, spec bumps and camera improvements. Not fussed about 5G at the moment, 4G works great in CBD.

Retains it's value very well (~80% after a year) so can easily resell & upgrade next year. Getting $550 for my 3 year old iPhone X.

I'm very happy with iOS ecosystem, works well for me, and prefer Apple's stance on privacy than others.

Got plenty of chargers and cables from previous devices so not including one is a non-issue. I accept it's a greed move for more profit but also understand the environmental impact too.

Picked up $299 AirPods Pro recently which are a massive upgrade from the launch day AirPods been using so far.

Wasn't sold on the HomePod originally but the improved functionality and the Mini's low price is worth a punt so getting one too.

Not seeing any negatives really for my preference and use case. To each their own.

Ah 80% you say. Definitely a high yield investment. That's why we all buy phones. Have you considered an AMG ?

  • I'm going for the iPhone 12 Mini cos it basically outshines my iPhone SE 2016 in every way possibly, sans the size. The only thing I'll miss is possibly the AUX, but if I use earphones I usually have the lightning cable earphones.

I have an iPhone X with 64GB storage
There is a bug in iOS/MacOS/iPadOS where photos are duplicated amongst devices repeatedly which needlessly takes up gigabytes of space. Pretty sure it’s to do with the metadata of the photo causing the software to treat them as different photos (simply because one is .jpg & another is .***). I’m in ongoing contact with Apple Senior Tech support on this issue, which has been ongoing for over 3 years without being fixed
As my storage space is low & all video is now in 4K, I’m getting an iPhone 12 mini with 128GB storage
If I need a larger screen, I have an iPad

And as previously pointed out, the Apple phone/tablet/laptop ecosystem is superior & more user friendly than Microsoft & Google

  • +1

Probably buy iPhone 11 Pro on discount. Most people don't need 5G anyway. 4G is fast enough.
With Covid situation, most people are on WiFi anyway.

    • That depends if WFH is going to be a future thing or not.
I originally thought the iPhone 12 was a good idea as it's 5G, more future proof. No doubt 5G infrastructure will become dominant in the coming years so having a phone on 5G will mean you should get a few years out of the phone.

      • You are very optimistic with 5g..aus is so behind

Plenty buying but NO legitimate REASON why

    • +1

What does this comment even mean? What counts as a legitimate REASON?

      • +1

        "A reason I approve of" obviously…

  • +2

because they can afford it, they love apple ecosystem and apple products are great in general. The only problem of apple products is expensive IMO, but Apple's users are not really price sensitivity customers.

  • I’m looking purely for the camera. I use it for our family photos daily and I’m currently rocking a 6s. Is it worth paying the extra to get a 12 or will 11 pro do the same job( As in camera quality any difference)? I’m fine buying a second hand one so waiting for 11 pros to drop a bit in price before deciding…

    • +4

From the research and reviews I've done, I dont think the 12 is worth the extra JUST for the camera. For the other things, maybe. But the cameras seem pretty similar. Obviously the 12 is better, but I would say probably not worth $300+ extra.

A beautiful Samsung OLED screen with an Apple logo imprinted on the back of your slab for just over 1k AUD, what more could you want?

    • +3

Luckily no Samsung bloatware anywhere in sight.

  • I buy new old stock phones, minus two generations. Currently on a Samsung S8 and really liking it. Still a good phone and does everything I need, but for 1/4 of the new price tag.

  • +1

Because I have an iPhone 6s Plus (used for 4 years), and I have $800 worth of vouchers as a gift. Tried Android before and didn’t like it.

Going to get the iPhone 12 pro max. Hope it’s not too big.

    • Might be better off trying it in store first, I'm in the same boat wondering if the 12 Pro Max is going to be too Max for me

    • have $800 worth of vouchers as a gift

      kinda sucks, why not cashmoney

      • Too much hassle. Not worth the risk of getting scammed by a buyer on eBay.

      • Gimmie plz. I need more monies.

  • +1

I have Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, iPad Pro and an iPhone 8, but will not buy any more iPhones. It's just getting ridiculously expensive.

  • yes, iPhone 12 go brrrrrrr

  • +1

If they are not providing charger and headphone

This aint an argument against buy or not as its not a deal breaker by any means. Now that apple’s started a new trend be prepared for other manufacturers to follow 😂. Besides; there are plenty of third party stuff available to match your style and color themes.

    why are you buying?

Not buying. Bought 11 pro last year which will last for some time. Only reason I went with pro is because of oled (battery saving through localised dimming + true dark mode). Now that all iphones are oled screens, it eliminates future need for pro model.

iphone 12 does not have 120hz refresh rate then why are you considering to buy it?

its a good feature for a device with good real estate such as ipad or desktop monitor on gaming or relevent tasks. not very useful for everyday productivity tasks you do on a small screen phone.

I've always been Android went Nexus line to One Plus then finally to Samsung. I went S10e to S20 and then the S20FE (for a couple of days). S20FE was a perfect phone due to the Snapdragon chipset - or so I thought. There were touchscreen issues that I could not ignore and the Snapdragon chipset still throttles the screen to 60Hz when I play games (which I do often).

Finally bought an iPhone 12 and got it today as I knew a redesign was coming and the OLED screen sealed the deal. I was hoping for 120hz but after using this phone it is definitely smoother than any Android phone I've had just due to iOS optimisation and animations.

There are a couple of annoying things I've found that Android does a lot better that I miss some may be small things but it builds up - maybe those experienced with iOS has workarounds that you could recommend?

    • Multitasking splitscreen and Youtube PiP - the only way I've been able to get Youtube PiP is using the shortcut that opens it in Safari and then opens a PiP of the video - it's not as seamless as I'd like. I also miss splitscreen to be able to read one thing and type it in on another app or have a game open - I have been using swiping left/right on the white bar but it's difficult if I have a game running in landscape.

    • No chat head bubble for Messenger, I guess it is what it is will have to switch between apps.

    • No way to add chrome pages to the homescreen - I've done it using a shortcut I have OzBargains with a shortcut widget but it takes up a lot of room.

    • Can't use the 5G with eSim and Physical sim on - I have 5G in my bedroom get sub 1gbps speeds when I need, not a big deal I guess since I can disable 1 sim to use it then enable it again. The dual sim in Android system is way better for SMS and calling in terms of user control and interface.

    • There's no work profile so work apps are always on and apps are not seperated from personal accounts.

    • There's no close all option for apps

    • There's no way (that I know of) to map shortcuts around the side of the screen (on Android I used Fluid) - eg swipe the right side of the screen to go back, swiping the bottom left up to go back. Which was super useful as I have smaller hands.

    • Phone throttles pretty bad when a notification comes up and I'm playing games. This is amplified if I'm charging my phone too as my phone gets quite hot. I'd say it throttles less than the S20FE though in general.

    • There's no battery percentage indicator on the status bar - only on control center or thru widgets

So the final takeaways from going Android to iPhone is that 60Hz vs 120Hz is not really a deal breaker for me (I thought it would be originally) - as the animations are smooth enough and applications will generally load faster and are more seamless when moving around. And with widgets now it's become much more customisable than it used to be.

The only thing is that there are much more limitations to how you can customise navigation on your phone as well as no multitasking.

TLDR: Gaming performance is better but ram still affects performance, missing out on multitasking, no Youtube Vanced (use the India Youtube Premium deal), not the best phone for work when needing 2 numbers, there needs workarounds for simple things such as shortcuts - which has an ugly transition as well.

  • Buy flappy bird iPhone and profit!

  • +7

do you wanna know the truth ?

We buy iphone because of the Apple logo and flex 😎

Aside from that, iPhones eco system is really well refined and works well across other Apple devices (airpods, mac). The camera on the 12 is really good and shoots natural photos (many androids sharpen photos and have beauty filters on selfies which honestly looks so fake). Apple devices are also supported for many more years software wise. Their software and hardware optimisation is extremely good. The 12 can perform just as well, if not better, than Android competitors, even without the best specs on paper. There are also many local Apple stores for hardware repairs which is convenient and a huge plus. Oh and not to mention, the resale value is insane!!! Use the 12 for a year and it'll still be worth around $1k

And this might be a subjective and stupid opinion, but the aesthetics of the iPhone is so beautiful. I will literally pay more for a well designed phone with good features than an ugly phone with the best specs. I'm sorry, I guess I'll have to hand in my ozb badge? But I also never pay full price on these things I want. All my Apple products I have were bought on discount

    • Well put. You may redeem your Ozb badge by helping me with any suggestions on how to get the 12 Pro Max or 11 Pro Max for a cheaper price? I like this Apple discount you speak of ;)
I was surprised to find the 256GB 11 Pro Max is more expensive than the 128GB 12 Pro Max. Was going to go 11, but there is no point.

      • +1

        LOL ok

for iPhone 12 pro max, try to gather 10% off gift cards (JB / Harvey) from classifieds or FB marketplace. If not, you can buy Harvey gift cards from redeemyourgiftcard for 7.25% off. They ask for bank transfer tho which is why discount rate is higher (they're legit dw).

Alternatively, sign up with new credit card with get x cashback on y spend offer (like the commbank/westpac $200 cashback for $1000 spend), pay for discounted 5% off gift card using credit card through an insurance/work benefit portal. Hit min spend for credit card by buying discounted gift card, get cash back, use discounted gift card on purchase and voila, you've saved a lot. Cancel the credit card once cashback comes through and avoid the annual fee.

Those are the only ways unless you have a friend who works for Apple.

Hey joking, I’m getting the pro max, but utilised the $500 free jbhifi voucher from Citibank (effectively $400 with an annual fee of $99), when u sign up for the rewards credit card. I Topped up the difference with free vouchers from work and bought 10%off jbhifi vouchers from AGL rewards.

        • Nice! Free vouchers from work sounds good. I have purchased a few 10% off cards from the Classified section here so I am on my way to at least saving 10% which is better than nothing!

Reliability - it's that simple for me.

I used to work for Telstra, and went through my string of phones (late 2000's/early's 2010's). Android, Windows Phone, iOS. Went through the HTC phase/Samsungs etc.

The iPhone 4 was the only phone that was reliable. It wouldn't randomly freeze mid use of app, it wouldn't need a reset to keep the phone running smoothly, it wouldn't need all the apps to close to stop the lagginess.

IT JUST WORKED. Basically all the time. There was no need to explore XDA to make my phone better. I just wanted a phone that would be reliable, without me having to do anything.

    • +4

This hits me hard. I used to love my android, all the customization but then one day i realized i wanted things that just worked so i bought a iphone se (The original one). Its a little slower now but still in use although mostly just receives calls now.
My employer gave me a macbook pro and a iphone11 and it does just work. If i leave this role i will probably buy a iphone12, because (and yes its fickle) i loved the aluminum "square" edges of my SE and the fact the 12 has it is amazing. Now if they could only design a device that actually sits flat on a table like the SE - Its one gripe with the 11 and 12 from what i can see, the cameras stick out past the body which means it never just sits flat.

  • Mrs needs to replace her iphone XR. She skipped the 11 (she's been wanting the wide angle for a long time). Plus we had $800 JB hifi voucher.

She's an apple user so no point buying her an S20 FE if she's not going to enjoy it.

I have an XR also which is running completely fine, but I'm waiting for the Z Fold 3.

    • Isn’t the XR still a really good phone?

      • Yes it is, I probably don't need to upgrade for another 2 years. I used to change phone like a wh*re before this XR.

Just over the fat bezels compared to the newer phones now

  • +1

I’d buy the iPhone 12 mini, as I believe it is the same size as the iPhone 8. For me the size of the phone (perfect pocket size) along with a faster CPU is most appealing. It shits me when you have to continually hold your phone like you have to with all the bigger phones.

    • it's actually smaller than the 8 but with a bigger screen. Its somewhere between the old se size and the 8.

Apple fans haters are like Trump supporters. Don't even bother arguing with them, its a waste of time trying to win them over with logic and facts.

      FTFY

      • -2

And hence my point proven. Apple fans are just like Trump fans. Cancel culture specialists.

        • +2

          lol. You're terrible at this.

        • It is the left that are guilty of cancel culture, not the right. The right argues, the left shuts you down with "racist" and other catchy phrases

    • +2

Ironically, this is the kind of low-intelligence argument only a Trump supporter could come up with.

      • -3

Even more ironically, its this kind of response that a bottom feeding closet Trump support would spout. Apple users are all the same, 1 track mind who cannot look outside their bubble, still holding your iphone with 3 fingers like you've been told to do?

        • +1

Best you can come up with after thinking about it all night? Just mere projection? Aren't you a sad little boy.

    • i know it’s weird - i mean, can you imagine that there are people that have different opinions and preferences over what kind of things they like? CRAZY

      • I know right, I can't believe that people are still petty enough to argue over which phone operating system you prefer?
Couldn't give two rats what you or anyone uses, I just want to know WHY you use it so I can decide for myself. So silly.

    • I'm an apple and android fan. But let's be honest now, Apple haters (for eg. echizen) are constantly in Apple thread spouting hate.

Replying from my amazing except for battery life Galaxy S10e.

  • +5

    My wife.

She's only ever had iphones, she has zero interest in tech, she knows how to work the iphone & generally 'it just works'. As an andriod user myself I dont agree however I absoutely see the appeal. Great service, apple stores around who fix it for free with no arguments in the warranty period, updates for years, simple to use, rarely changes & backs-up and retores simply.

Its not the technical people Apple wants, its the people that have zero interest in tech and just want something simple that works.

Apple see's itself as the Ferarri or the phone world… its not, its the Toyota. But Toyota sells lots of bland & reliable cars!

    • +1

Why would technical people not buy iPhones? Do they not want the software which just works out of the box and is deterministic given how difficult it is for a complex software to work as such, reliably for most of the time? Focus on privacy? Even the cost argument vis a vis Android doesnt stand because in most cases the difference isnt much or that the RRP's for some are even higher. Its another matter that the same OEM sells the phone at 20-30% off on the first day.

      • Sure.

I'm not fighting a corner, I was on Apple for 10 years until last year. Great hardware, great support, reliable. I left because they got a bit dull. Android has bloomed in the past few years, gone lots more "Apple" but its fun :)

    • Which company is the Ferrari in the phone world? I'm curious

      • +1

Technically it would be the one that spontaneously catches on fire…

My mum got the iPhone 12. Had to make an appointment several days before, to buy it at the Apple store! Bought it because a) she had until then been using a iPhone 6, and being 6 years old, it was no longer getting software updates, but she was otherwise very happy with using an iPhone, and b) she had a milestone birthday and it was a gift. Bought it on my price protection credit card, because price drops on a new phone over a 2 year window are a virtual certainty. Win/win.

Edit: For charging, she will mostly just use her old cable. For the new USB-C charging cable in the box, I bought a USB-C to to USB-A converter from eBay for a few dollars, will see if that works and if so, she can use it in the car (frankly, I really think such a converter should have been included in the box, as USB-C chargers are super-rare right now). Lack of headphones is a bit annoying (old headphones not compatible with new phone). Also the omission of a MagSafe charger from the box I think is a big missed opportunity - the Apple store staff talked a lot about the benefits of the wireless charging on the iphone 12, and even the cases are all designed around this, but they don't include a MagSafe charger, instead it's a $65 extra purchase, which most people won't make. I think most people would be absolutely fine with the removal of the headphones and charger if they included a MagSafe charger plus a USB-C to USB-A converter in the box instead (and just to be clear, despite the name, the "MagSafe charger" is a charging pad, you still need to supply a wall charger unit). It would also help speed up the adoption of wireless charging.

    • What credit card has 2 year price protection?

      • I think some of the old Coles credit cards and also the 28 degrees credit cards

I had one of the old 28 degrees credit card with Justin was 12 months and I didn't realise it had that and I cancelled it as far as I know now it's much harder to find a credit card with this kind of length in price protection

        • Yeah it was Coles MasterCard with Account Cover Plus: https://www.coles.com.au/credit-cards/existing-customers/faq… (i.e. grandfathered price protection, had to sign up before Feb 2018). Basically it was either 2 years at same retailer with Coles, or 1 year at any retailer with 28 Degrees. Neither is available to new customers, and I'm not aware of any cards currently offering anything similar (the complimentary ones that comes with some new cards are highly restricted, require a physical catalog, short windows of ~30 days, lots of restrictions and nowhere near as useful).

    • iPhone 6 just received a big update to number 14 .
I know because I’m using one right now 😀😉

      • Are you sure? On this page: https://www.apple.com/au/ios/ios-14/ … near the bottom for compatible devices, it does not list the iPhone 6. It does however list the iPhone 6S. Perhaps you have a 6S? (a one year newer device). Or perhaps Apple have not updated that page yet?

        • +1

Sorry mate you are correct,I thought the 6 and 6s were virtually the same mobile. Accept the 6s is bigger.

          What a bummer ….

          • @lost in transit: All good :-) Yeah for a while there Apple released the S models a year later (3G then 3GS, 4 then 4S, 5 then 5S, 6 then 6S), then they stopped and just went to a separate model number each year (with sub-variants like Pro/Max/Pro Max/Mini), which is probably a better naming scheme.

            • @nickj: I’ll admit I’m usually a Samsung fan , but i was given this model a couple of years ago for 50 bucks.
              Ive slowly warmed to Apple.
Not a fan of there locked up System but security and updates are a plus..

              Cheers

        • Same. I made the mistake of getting a Note 5 at launch and figured S-Pen had issues in the corner and at the top of the screen. Despite the fact Apple's main Android competitor (Samsung) released flagship phones that were just as expensive this year. Hence why people ask questions like OP. For the money, which is a better buy and why.

      • not sure if srs. The flagship for Samsung was 1k cheaper.

  • +6

Resale value and easy to transfer - very very simple to upgrade and transfer settings etc.

Every year I get a new iphone, my wife gets a 1 year old iphone, and we sell a 2 year old iphone.

Considering the tax deductions or salary packaging you tend to end up quite ahead on resale (often you are effectively getting paid to upgrade).

"Technically" your resale would be assessable income to the ATO though.

  • I can buy one for you if you want, don't need any reasons.

    • Because you're rich, kid?

    • ok mate can ya buy me the new Blue one? cheers

    • can you buy one for me too 🥺

  • I've used them since the beginning. I've tried Android's but I find that it's just too much going on. But honestly I probably wouldn't buy an iPhone 12 if i couldn't salary sacrifice, I'd probably end up going down to an SE if I had to pay completely out of pocket the full amount and I wanted to stay with Apple.

  • I am because I can

  • +1

    I'll be getting a 12 pro max.

I don't need a reason, however I'll be coming from a tired 7+, which will be handed over to my grand-mother-in-law for her hearing aides.

I don't have many other luxuries or niceties per se, and I use my phone a lot, so I can justify the spend, mostly.

Looking forward to a faster device and being able to take better photos and videos in general and of the family etc.
The lidar looks interesting, and am looking forward to playing with that.

I am also looking forward to the possibility of my work mobile being moved over to an ESIM, negating the need for a second seperate phone. A weight saving measure on my daily commute (albeit rather small).

I'd envisage that, unless there are any significant issues with the phone, I'll keep it for a few years, arguably longer than the average iphone user/owner.

    • I'll be getting a 12 pro max.

      I don't need a reason,

I know someone who give the same answer :)

  • +1

I'm getting the 12 pro or pro max, upgrading from iPhone X. I've had this phone for 3 years now, time for an upgrade. Not a fan of Android.

I'm a bit concerned about the size of the pro max though, it's going to be a massive jump in size from the X. Keen to hear why people are choosing the pro max over the pro. Is it portable enough? What about one-hand usage?

    • I am getting old I need larger screen hahah, I read a lot on the go on these devices
