I like the Camera so when I resume roaming oversea I dont need to take a camera, this is good enough.
the 7 was a great phone. I kind of regret upgrading to the X the next year as it was a bit unnecessary, and the X features took about a year to settle in, and the XS and 11 were much better at the new photo modes than my X ever was.
Personally, I don't mind there's no charger and headphones.
I have an S10+ and couldn't tell you where my charger and headphones are because I do not use them.
I am using wireless chargers or USB Hubs to charge and I have much better headphones.
What I don't like is being lied to that this is for the environment. Sure it might be, but by providing a less popular type C cable, they're screwing over a lot of their user base. I'd say most don't have a type-c to lightning.
There should be a program to get one for free within 60 days of purchase.
I agree here. I think maybe phasing out the charger next year would've been okay as upgrading your phone every 2 years isn't unheard of. However the only people who will have a USB-C charger would be the people who bought iPhone 11 Pro's last year. And those people probably aren't looking at upgrading since there is little difference.
Really think Apple fudged up with that decision. It is just downright greedy.

The press constantly complain they dont use usb c, so they include usb-c (and switched to the usb-c cable as default last year). Also all other apple products are usb-c now and while a large majority of iphone users dont use mac, a large number of people who convert to mac come in from iphones, so it's a nicer experience that way. If you dont have an old cable lying around, then you probably didnt have an iphone, in which case maybe your device was already on usb c. Either way, if they included usb-a then maybe it would encourage people who needed a power brick to buy a usb-a powerbrick, which isnt very future proof.
Honestly, they've been very committed to the environment for years now on their materials and recycling (with various levels of success). It obviously saves them money too, but this likely offset by the increased cost of the 5g they have to buy from qualcomm and which comes on every new iphone. Personally 5g is a joke atm, but given these phones should last non tech obsessed people 3-5 years, it probably makes sense to include.
In the end, i think if the $30 is a deal breaker on buying a new iphone, then you should not be buying an iphone. I've never owned an android but been tempted a few times, but honestly looking at modern phones, i cannot see a compelling reason for anyone to switch from an environment they are happy with (IOS/Android) to the other. Both are so mature at this point, and the additional features they add usually come to the other phones within a year and dont usually change your life. Honestly, you really have to pixel peak to see the difference between the cameras on the best iphones vs the best Androids, and they both tend to win in some situations vs others.

Not true. iPad is still lightning. Magic Mouse, keyboards, all lightning. The good thing about the type C to lightning cable is that it now works with a MacBook, but as you say, not many iPhone users apparently use Macs.

iPad pros and the new Air is usb-c and come with chargers, as do all apple laptops in last few years. Desktop macs as well have had usbc for a while. They are overdue to update those other accessories you list. I guess my point was if you bought a mac in the last few years, youd have a way to charge with the included cable and that would be a better experience than if they had usb-a.

Well with a usb-c port on the phone you'd want one on the charging bricks no? If they switch the port on the phone to usb-c next year maybe it'll make more sense.
I mean lets envision this year, they switched to usb-c and didn't include charger. How is that any better, it'd be way worse for most people as basically none would have a compatible charger, and may need multiple to replace the years of lightning ones many people have in a household. By keeping lighting the vast majority of existing customers have an charging solution that can charge their phone.

I think the point is they believe they'll have to ship significantly less. And if not a significant decrease this year, it will be next year. It's just something people will get used to over time.

Part of my point is, if they need a charger why? Lightning has been standard for so long for apple, if you are an existing user you should have one. Some of those people will need new ones for various reasons, but what percentage is that? For switchers, if you've been on android there may be a decent chance you have a usb-c block.
I guess to a certain extent it's speculation and the only way to know whether apple ends up shipping 30% or 90% of chargers with the phone is for apple to make the decision and see what the numbers are like (not that we will ever get to know) on whether there was a significant number of chargers sold with the new iPhones.
Is it likely that less people would have needed chargers if they included usb-a to lightning, i dunno maybe. But i dont know how most people charge. Maybe apple sees usb-c as standard on most computers not just apple in the last 5 years (and assumes people charge that way), sees a large part of their market using wireless chargers, and think the number of users who need a dedicated power brick is a smaller subsection. I mean i think theres also the case that using usb-c, and people buying a usb-c charger instead of an a, is better long term than including a usb-a cable, and people who need a power brick buying another usb-a. That being said, it's not clear to me how many people have working usb-a chargers but not lighting to usb-a cables.
Finally, for whatever reason (usb 3 spec?) the fast charging is only enabled over usb-c, so perhaps they just wanted to include the cable that would give customers the best experience if they did have to include the power brick.
Ultimately, i think most of the people complaining about this online would never buy one of these phones, and could have made similarly compelling arguments about it not being environmentally friendly if it was a usb-a to lightning instead. Who uses usb-a anymore, i just bought an anker 5 in one usb-c charger for my macbook, iPad and iPhone, and now i need to buy a new cable to charge the iphone? etc etc.

No, because all flagship phones are overpriced. It's a phone, you make calls, text, email, use maps, take photos, use social media, browse the web and play games. Even if you use your phone for work, I would hardly call iPhone a productivity powerhouse. A mid ranger is usually sufficient for most people. By not buying in to the flagship hype you save $600-700 every two years.
I'm an android user but I'm still excited with an Apple release.
If COVID hasn't been around and had the chance to be with my mother, I probably would have helped her get an iPhone 12 pro max.
There is a big if, which is if she wants to change her phone this year.
She still works and her work relies on the phone a lot, so it's better if I get her something that she's used to that's the "latest", not an older model.
Plus, since I am not around half the time, it's easier for me to stick to something she's familiar with.
My dad uses Galaxy Note 10, I think. He enjoys tech stuff more than my mother so I don't really have to help him get a new phone.
Though I do help setting the phone up for his usage.

Yea, upgrading from the 11 pro max to the 12 pro max. Claiming the cost of the phone for tax purposes make it a free/very low cost (~$100) upgrade every year (providing I sell my old phone for a reasonable price). Plus the $500 JB gift card, which essentially means I'm making money back on upgrading.
Having said that, if the above weren't doable, I'd just keep the 11 pro max, it's fairly future proof as it is and I have no gripe with it.

Ok I'll bite into this whole Apple debate. Firstly, I've had both iPhones and Android handsets in the past and I plan to update to the 12 pro max.
1) I've had my iPhone X since launch and still runs perfect but I do enjoy taking awesome pictures/video and I think it's lacking a little behind the times, plus things like GPS etc cause it to overheat pretty bad so I think time is due.
2) I work in aviation and unfortunately they primarily develop in iOS, anything Android is behind the times and doesn't have a full functionality
3) Things just work, it's very rare that I have any software glitches or app issues and if there has been it's been updated pretty fast
4) I have headphones already (yes airpod pros although as a pax I also my Bose QC35's) so it doesn't bother me they don't come with any. Connectivity is seamless every time.
5) I also have a wireless charger beside the bed and in the car, so again not really fused there isn't a charger supplied, outside of that I use a Romoss 20+ which charges super fast. Now if Apple eventually ditches the actual charging port for things like that I'll probably switch to a different brand, especially for things like the Mavic pro/drones in general (like hello??! How will people get around things like that??) but until then, meh.
6) I looove my Apple watch, it's light, works awesome and again has support for the apps I use for work. Nothing fancy here, again got the series 3 at the same time as the X and works perfect. Personally prior to this I didn't enjoy wearing a watch, might have been the weight or something, but this I wear all day every day and has held up like a dream.
7) iPad mini, again work related but man are they smooth, even if I ever did go Android again I doubt I'll move away from the iPad. As for the computer, I'm a windows guy, never really got my head around the Mac and find it too restrictive.
8) Apple tv running Kayo works a mint, after trying Chromecast etc I just paid up and got it for the old man, works perfect. As for the app development from Kayos side, it's average at best, so much work to get what you want, but yeah, streams perfect and with ease.
My only gripe is I wish they had micro SD support, that's the only thing that if I were to be jealous of, I would be. But I've survived 3-4 years without it to date and hadn't been that big of a deal. I just wish I could take a pic straight off the drone and edit it on my phone, so instead I wait till I'm home, no big deal. 1st world problems.
Long story short, buy what you like and what you can afford. But I'm happy with my choice regardless (and yeah I see the pros of the other brands, Sony/Samsung etc, but right now, it isn't for me).

As a 20+ year Windows guy, I understand where you're coming from when you say the Mac feels restrictive. Funnily enough, since macOS is UNIX, it has all the under-the-hood power, customisability, and nitty-gritty low-level control you get with any UNIX system.
To be frank though, diving into terminal isn't my favourite thing.
Im going with the iphone 12 mini. Same size at the iphone 8 (which my wife has and is very happy with) but i thought i would upgrade her now with better camera etc. Plus i get 15% off retail. So for around 1k not bad. I have the very average pixel 4. Was gong to get the 5 but ill stick it out to the 6 so they will have touch id and hopefully reintroduce the face id.

Charging cable is not normal USB so cannot use in car charging with normal charger. Have to buy a specific charger. Cannot plug into normal USB port in any device.

Buying a lightning cable is as easy as buying a micro-usb or type-c cable
For chargers
You can use any USB chargers that provide power of 5V 1A or above to charge iPhone or Android phones
Just that if you need fast-charging, you will required the fast changing standards that your phone supports
Some android phone supports QC (Quick Charge), some supports PD (Power Delivery) and some both
For iPhone since iPhone 8 above, it supports PD fast charging (9V 2A)
(Easiest way to identify a PD charger is PD charger end point must be Type-C,
So to charge Android phone on PD, you need Type-C to Type-C cable
while to charge iPhone on PD, you need Type-C to Lightning cable)
Many new flagship android phones doesn't have headphone jack too
including Google Pixel 5 and Samsung S20
and this will be the trend for most upcoming phones

It just works great with less dramas than an Android phone, particularly more refined apps (less buggy).
Gf recently got an S20+ and had to send it back due to DOA. Despite being on the latest OS version, the native camera app crashed. New handset did not have this issue, but the FB app randomly crashes. After a week, the FB app settled. Bestie who works at Samsung can attest to the more robust apps on iOS as opposed to Android, and she uses and tests Samsung devices as part of her job.

On paper android phones are much better. I keep buying the top android, and I am inevitably disappointed with the photos it produces.
I do like being able to modify the phone, but it's a chore. Something as simple as backing up your phone is so complicated it isn't worth the hassle.
You also miss out on FaceTime and group sms. Yes there are alternatives, but if no-one else is using them whats the point.

In general, still prefer the Apple iOS, here are my reasons:
Just in general, apps in iOS works much better than the same app in Android, less crashes, more smooth operations, better navigation, less battery consumption, less causing phone to be heated up (there are many times my samsung phone got so hot because some unknown processes are running in the background)
iPhone get OS updates supports much longer. Even Samsung are doing much better now, you rarely can get OS upgrade over 3 years. For Apple, even 5 years phone still get latest OS update.
Apple Pay is the best wireless payment solution, works just great in touch ID / face ID and even better with Apple watch. For android, confusions always that many different apps doing similar thing, like samsung pay or google pay. And I hate the swipe from bottom feature in samsung to trigger Samsung pay, so always turn that off too.
While someone likes Android that you have more visibility of file management, I am disagreeing on this. Even been a Android users over 8 years, I still doesn't like how Android store photos and files. There are many times when I receive a file, or taking a photo / screen shots and I have no idea where the file has been located. It can be in the SD card, in phone directory or even in the app specific folder. Compare to iOS, I have no issues at all, it will be either "File" or "Photos", thats it.
Cloud backup has been a big add-on in recent years, and iOS iCloud is just working seamlessly with iPhone and the apps. Upgrading to newer iphone is as simple as logging in to iCloud and you get everything back from your previous phones, no transfer needed. In Android, yes you can do Google backup (or Samsung backup for samsung phones) but I have experiencing few times of data losing when upgrading to new samsung phones. The apps are re-installed but the data within the app hasn't been transferred over. iCloud is just working way better than Android backup solution.
One of the best feature in iOS I use regularly is "Find my phone", which include the "Play sound to alert where the phone is". Really useful feature when I misplace my phone somewhere, or drop it under the bed. And there are at least few times where I left my phone in the Gym, and I can quickly realised when I reach home and locate my iPhone from my iPad. Besides, the "Find My" feature is also really help that I know my wife is heading home, so I need to clean up my mess before she arrives =]
[Declaration: I work in IT and has been doing Hybrid app development for few years, due to work requirements I have lots of Apple products like Macbook pro, iPad, iPhone and Apple watch, but I am not a Apple fan boy (use Windows PC for all non-work stuff). Started as Android developer back in Android 4.2 / 4.4 (now Android 10) when Android Studio was still using a clone from Eclipse. Choosing iphone over android is purely personally experience in daily use case…]

here are the things that Android is still better than iOS (IMO)
Siri (with Apple Homekit) doesn't even match 50% features compare to Google Assitant. I have all my home smart devices connected to Google Home Eco system and they works really great. Controlling smart devices using voice command is my daily thing now!
Google Home devices I use including Google Home (original speaker), Home Mini, Home Hub, Home Hub Max, Nest Hello doorbell
Connected smart devices including the XiaoMi Home products (lights, robot, air purifier), LIFX lights, Ecobee smart thermostat, Reolink IP cams, a few smart plugs, Gogogate smart garage door etc.
Some features that only android can do, such as separating user profile (work / personal) which I like a lot. In iOS, when you join device management in enterprise system you basically hand over the permission to your company, sounds dangerous to me…
Clear storage / cache feature in Android system is pretty useful if you want to reset the app back to its default status, in iOS you need to delete and re-install
Here are some points used to be reasons of choosing Android over iPhone, but no longer the case:
Back button is lacking in iOS. But now you can go "back" by the shortcut on the top left corner, and most iOS app are designed to be navigating using the bottom bar or a app button to go back (on the left of title bar), so "Back" button is no longer an issue.
Android phone has micro-SD card support to extend storage which iOS doesn't. However, with iCloud now in-built with iOS iPhone will automatically backup the photos and data that are not used frequently to free up the phone storage. Unless you have many apps that installed then go to get the biggest iPhone capacity model, otherwise I think 128GB is enough for most people.
Most good Android features are now being "copy-cat" to iOS, like notification bar, widgets (iOS14), swiping keyboard.
In early days, lots of complains in iOS has a limitation that you can only connect iPhone to PC via iTune, while there are many 3rd party tool in iOS nowadays, I actually found that I haven't needed to connect my phone to computer much now. Files backup are done in iCloud automatically, OS upgrade can be done directly on the phone, most social media as their app to upload content directly. Music are now listen via streaming services like Apple Music, Sportify or Youtube music. I can't even remember when was my last time using iTune…
Dual sim used to be one of the thing I prefer on Android over iPhone. However, since iPhone 11 where it introduce eSim I am pretty happy with 1 eSim 1 microSim settings. Now using the Australia provider with eSim and overseas Simcard with microSim slot.
I dislike the back button. I hit it so many times accidentally when using an S7.
Agree tho that Google Assistant is great. My home is all Google Home automation and whilst I haven't dabbled with Homekit, and like the cheaper cost entry of Google and it's support with other third parties.

Android has had this for a while, and just like iOS, you can locate, lock & erase your devices. Android also shows you connected WiFi network & remaining battery (not clear if iOS does this on my 30-second glance at it's features).
Oh - and you don't have to try and locate your devices using Apple Maps! :P
Very handy when used with Google Home/s - just say "Hey Google, find my phone" and it'll starting ringing it for you.

I have owned apple and android phones.
My reason for no longer using apple devices is that while apples UI used to blow android out of the water, it feels like every update since has made it LESS intuitive. Every android update has done the opposite.
Perhaps it's just the way I've got my OnePlus5 setup (not super custom or anything I think I just have a launcher installed) and that I'm used to it, but using an iphone now feels like another language. Very unintuitive.
I won't be getting the 12 but will likely get the 13 or whatever the 2021 edition is
Have been a staunch user of Android since I went from the Iphone3g to the Galaxy S1 -> S7. In between the galaxies I used a whole bunch of other phones (Sony/Motorola/1+1 etc etc); upgrading because there were the usual issues I could never iron out - random battery drain or phone slowing down despite running a minimal setup.
Was on the S7 for 8 months before I was gifted an Iphone8+ and now I really don't see any reason to go back. Of all the phones I've owned, this one just works and battery/performance/support has been second to none. I suppose there are restrictions and some of the menus and settings are annoying to get to, but I don't have to trawl through XDA to fix bugs or quirks that affect day to day performance 3.5 years on.
Part of me back in the day enjoyed doing all the tinkering but now that I'm time poor and I'm more than happy to pay a little more for something that'll last 4-5 years without taking too much of a performance hit (taking appropriate measures to minimise cost of course).
i have an iPhone 6 that i've had since 2014. I'm getting pretty desperate for an upgrade as i held off last year. I'm 90% positive i'll end up getting a 12 but then again could be swayed to wait another year.
I had the same impression about the iPhone 12 they look really good this year. Having said that, the transition to a USB C - lightning cable gives me a decent amount of hope that next year's iPhone will have a USB-C port. Whether that materialises or not, I'm not sure but that's probably a good reason to hold out.
I pre ordered the 12 with Good Guys and they still haven't got stock and can't say when. Everyone going on about 120hz refresh rate and getting rid of the notch completely while I'm just happy on any improvement from my current iPhone 6

Look at buying a second hand iPhone 11 off Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree.
Otherwise the iPhone SE or iPhone 12 Mini are decently priced for what you get.

From a quick check on Marketplace, iPhone 7+ are going for around $300-$400 so you could take that into consideration when buying the new one.

Got a Black 12 on Saturday and sold my 11 SG pro for the same price. Really like it, here's my take for what it's worth.
Big difference in weight.
Has better grip nice to hold not slippery on the back.
Bit bigger screen is noticable, like how its flatter not curved, all seems one piece when you move your hands around it.
No yellow screen on mine.
Buttons are flatter and nicer to use.
Battery seems great so far NO complaints here, and my 11 pro still had 100% battery, not using 5G yet.
Call quality is excellent and way better than my 11 pro, for me worth it alone it's my business phone.
Speakers are louder and sound better.
Have only taken a few indoor photos and they were good.

Trying to buy apple care+ monthly for Apple Watch SE, but asks to enter credit card details? How did you get it to bill using iTunes credit?
Thanks used the support app as well, I didn't have any other payment method saved other then iTunes credit that's why its asked for credit card details. It now shows as a subscription so hopefully it deducts from the iTunes credit first.
New phone or new car…hmmph
I'm currently using a Pixel 3 and after going through a few android phones (a few Oppos) I've decided its either between the Samsung S20/ultra or iPhone 12. For me the iPhone is winning due to the operating system and the way the apps run smoother (I'm an ex iphone user). Plus resell value of iPhone is huge.
I've recently been looking at the Pixel 5 though as well.
It's pretty impressive and only fraction of the price.
It seems to be pretty optimised and smooth too.
I think Pixel phones are great, but they generally underperform specwise compared to other phones in similar price points. They also have always released their latest phone with a random huge flaw - like small battery, small screensize, huge forehead, blue tint etc… They also don't hold value well. Gone are the days when Google's camera was unmatched.
The Pixel 5 is supposed to be Google's response to this, with a lower price and aimed at mid-range. But spec-wise the processor is pretty weak this year (they seem to always do something to not put out the perfect phone lol) and it's price in at $900-$1000 which again is too high IMO. If they were around $600 they would be bargains, but yeah.
Yay for finally being able to preorder iPhone mini…. so looking forward to going back to one-handed use. 😁 Also picked up the magsafe charger puck, as I am worried about battery life, and I figure this might make it easier to keep topped up.
