Are you confusing a 3.5" desktop drive with a 2.5" portable drive?

    • Granted that the expansion portables are humongous among the 2.5"s. But you are comparing a 3.5 with a 2.5.

      • +1

        OMG, there is always one!

        • Have you physically seen a expansion portable? They are HUGE, its probably 3 times the volume of a Lacie Rikiki, mind you its a 12.5 rather than a 9.5, but still. Its one big drive.

    • wtf where does it even say it's 2.5"?

I think portable is better then Desktop.

    • -3

i dont think this is the actual portable version, its the dektop. i dont beleive they have a 1.5tb that small yet.

      • +2

It's portable and the seagate do comes in 1.5 Tb.

      • Ahh nice one thanks :)

      • Portable drives of 1.5TB capacity have been around for a while now (around a year).

What makes this confusing is that the Dick Smith website clearly states "Portable" indicating a 2.5" drive but the picture shows what appears to be a 3.5" desktop drive.

Hi Guys, Apologies the image on the website is incorrect. We will have this any any other incorrect information updated. The hard drive is definitely portable. No power cords required.

wow Kudos for a DSE rep to be monitoring this site..

        • Dear Mr Dick, Can you please do a sale on USB 3.0, maybe http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM1265/wd-my-passport-essent… this for $115? Officeworks would do it no doubt lol
          Cheers

        • Fincky, got the wd essentials 3.0 for 118 at Harvey Norman.

        • -1

          your dreaming? Link me.

        • Sorry Fincky, since I bought it a few weeks ago, the price went up to 159 at Harvey Norman

Domayne has it listed on their website as 118 though
          http://www.domayneonline.com.au/western-digital-my-passport-…

N no need for the "youre dreaming" comment either.

        • PS that domayne one is 1TB..

    • -1

Both are 3.5" so no real difference except for the hard drive inside, which if they are both expansion then they are probably the same hard drive series.

      No deal!

  • +1

yup dse got it wrong … its not a portable .. comes with an AC adaptor !
"External hard drive, USB cable, Power Adaptor and Quick start guide."

    • +2

they used a template for teh interwebz.

rookie error but it is the 2.5" sans power adaptor.

Hi Guys, Apologies the image on the website is incorrect. We will have this and any other incorrect information updated. The hard drive is definitely portable. No power cords required.

  • OP, could you clarify on what you actually bought? Does it require a separate power supply?

  • I was at Dick Smith recently and this is a 3.5" with power adapter.

I remember getting confused because the 2TB was cheaper then the 1.5TB.

    • this special started today/tomorrow's catalogue

it is the 2.5" drive with no power adaptor

      • -1

not in the catalogue anywhere. Checked lasoo and Dick Smiths own catalogue webpage

  • Seagate external desktop drives provide extra storage for your ever-growing collection of files???

If your after a portable hdd then have a look at this http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8227#, Much better deal than whats on here

    • $20 more for half the storage capacity…….

not really a better deal at all

      • +1

Its says special price $55 on the website. So less than half the price of this deal, and it is definitely portable. So buy 2 and save yourself $9 ;)

        • it actually says deal is for the 21st/9 - 24th/9 so that would be expired

        • Its says special price $55 on the website

          it also says

          (Special Price $55 from 21/09 to 24/09 )

unfortunately time travel is not one of my talents….

Guys the confusion is Dicksmith website shown a wrong picture of the drive in Portable section. I have bought this 2.5" drive today. It does not have any power cord. Its a really 2.5" drive. believe it or not.

  • +1

i can show you the bill and picture of 2.5" HDD if you want.

    • So this actually comes with the USB cable yeah? Just has not power adaptor (which is does not need)

  • Nice price. Would have bought one if only for the fact that this isn't the USB 3.0 version :(

    • Precisely what made this - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53391 - an unforgettable deal for the time. (and I got it at OW :)

      • I got a 3TB desktop goflex for the same price, expandable to USB3.0 as well as well as a NAS(for a price of course)

  • I saw it few weeks ago it is 2.5" drive but it is thinker so it won't fix in any other case or Laptop Deal breaker.

    • I know this 2.5" 12.5mm drive does actually fit into the HP DV6-3000, DV6-4000 and DV6-6000 drive bays.

  • I hate Seagate drives, they're like eggs. I dropped my 870gb portable only 2feet off the ground and it's gone. Click of death :(

    • Didn't know you could get 870GB?

      • +1

I think they were under capacity 1Tb drives, so Seagate knocked them off as a smaller capacity and cheaper instead of chucking them in the bin.

        • +1

They were advertised as 880GB on the box FYI :)

        • Yeah i know.

    • That's exactly what happened to my WD a few days ago.
      But I am not complaining.
      Rule #1 : do not drop HDD's.
Rule #2 : if your HDD still alive after you dropped it, you are just lucky.

PS I still like WD more than Seagate, but I would not say WD is much better than Seagate.

      • Same here, had much better luck with WD, just

    • Talking about eggs, I dropped an egg only 2feet off the ground and it's gone. What crappy quality.

      Luckily I bought them in a dozen…

  • Doesnt it have another layer so its not technically a 2.5 inch ?

  • Why o why couldnt this be a USB 3.0 drive :(

  • hey guys, I've just pried this thing opened which I bought today and it turned out to be a really big 15mm drive!!

Hopefully it will fit into my 15.6" notebook >.>'

    • Success!! it actually fits in. However it does stick out a bit:

      http://www.divshare.com/download/16229752-bea
      http://www.divshare.com/download/16229757-b67

Despite this minor problem, it works really well!

For anyone who is interest. The model of the notebook where I installed this hard drive in is a HP DV6-3131TX. However, any model within the following HP DV6 series can fit these humungous 15mm drives:

      DV6-3000 Series
      DV6-4000 Series
      DV6-6000 Series

      • +2

now thats a buldge most techs would be proud of!

      • wow 15mm and it fitted?? i'm surprised u would be able to squeeze in a 12mm one

so this one comes SATA to USB adapter instead of a built in USB port on the hd like the WD ones?

  • What's with the "d"?
