Your best bargain ever that you kept secret because you didn't want it OzBargained

There's been some interesting deals in the past which have quickly evaporated due to the merchant shutting down the offer after getting OzBargained. One example is the Maccas buy five babycino get any free loyalty coffee in any size of your choice: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/449317. So I'm wondering if there were any killer deals you found in the past that you were just too greedy to share in the fear that you would miss out.

My top one was this: Before COVID, the Velocity Rewards store had a price error for Bose Home Speaker 300. It's usually worth $399 (RRP), but was priced at 2,614 points. If you equate one point to one cent, that's about $26.14. I only found it because I was trying to use up some points before they expire, so set the search to look for items under 5,000 points. I remember seeing a Priceline $10 gift card and the Bose speaker! So my dad and I snapped up one each, thinking that they're not going to honour it, but we would take our chances. Sure enough, 24 hours later, the deal was removed and it returned to the usual price 71,830.points. I never ended up posting it to OzBargain in time because I was hoping the order would first ship before realising the pricing error. I knew as soon as I posted it here there would probably be more than a thousand orders, meaning that no one's orders would ship as they wouldn't be able to fulfil them all. Sorry guys! And who knows, they may have gone into administration more quickly.

Anyone else with similar stories? Size of the deal doesn't matter. I think I got really lucky on this one.

  • Never done that because a) I never find bargains for some reason and 2) Not selfish, at worst you could buy it then share on ozbargain afterwards

  • Couple years ago there was a glitch on the Nike website with cash rewards and if I went through the checkout to the last page before paying, it was logged as a confirmed transaction.

Ended up loading my cart with the most expensive items and got paid out hundreds of dollars months later.

So there are the usual free credits upon sign ups "rinse and repeat".

However that is kind of small play, so the next one is not really a bargain in itself but it could land big bucks, but you would need to jump through some hoops and it's abit unethical. I have not tried it yet, not that I want to, but from what I have observed I'm highly confident it could net half a grand each time/per item.

Just remembered another one: there was a time Dick Smith online had a sale on iTunes gift cards posted here on OzBargain probably some 10 years ago. However, there was some kind of error with their payment processing system so the order seemed like it didn't go through. However, I was using an iPad and refreshed the final confirmation page a few times to see if I could get it to go through.

Result: can't remember exactly, but received something like 10x $20 iTunes physical gift cards in the mail, paid exactly $0. I held off on redeeming them and actually emailed Dick Smith to report the issue, but received no reply. Waited a couple of weeks to see what would happen, and nothing did, so I redeemed the lot. Sure got great use out of my iPhone 3GS back then.

Nothing i could 'share' on ozB but ill say it anyway - back in my Uni days i worked for Woolworths/BWS and you get a 5% discount at woolworths, BWS and 10% at big W.

My card was cancelled not long after i left when i went to the check out it stopped working however online the 'numbers on the card' would still give me the discount. It took about 3 years for they caught on. For a long time i stacked that discount with the Cashrewards 5% off gift cards - not a huge barging but over the prior it probably saved me at least a grand or so

Similar thing happened when I left DJs. They cancelled my online staff discount four months later, but it still worked on my work computer due to not logging out on it and cookies; had to open a new tab every so often to keep the staff discount going. Took them another month before they realised what happened.

In 2018 I was able to get a 75" Samsung NU8000 TV from David Jones due to an error on their website. The TV was $5000 at the time and all I had to pay was $50 shipping. Samsung was also running a promotion at the time where you were able to claim an XBOX One X if you bought a Samsung TV. So all up it was about $5500 value.

was shopping for a pressure washer, eyed a $1,000 model at a shop (browsing online). Called and asked if they would sell their display for $500 and they agreed. Went to pick it up and noticed bits and pieces were missing, negotiated further on the spot and they agreed to let it go for $300. Took it home, it didnt run very well so I took it back to the shop. I didn't want to refund it coz it was an absolute steal buying a $1,000 pressure washer for only $300 bucks so i asked them to send it for repair under warranty. They said why don't we just give you a replacement since you only just bought it a day ago, and they swapped it with a brand new in box pressure washer.
In short, bought a brand new $1,000 machine for $300.

Deal was before I knew about ozbargain, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway, I ended up grabbing everything anyway.

I don't know how many of you know about Magic the Gathering, anyway, one of the big wholesalers pretty much got out of the game and called me up dumping their supply of Fatpacks (they had 6 boosters, a book and a dice at the time). I couldn't do math that day for some reason, but the price ended up being something like $3 per fat pack including shipping. A bit better than 90% off.

Called her back a minute or two later and said, "I'll take them."

    "How many did you want."

    "All of them."

"You don't know how many I have."

"Don't care. I'll take them all."

I almost shit myself when about 2 or so pallets turns up. It was one of those, What did I just do moments. I think it cost me about $3k. It took about 3 months but I turned that into about $15k (which is a significant discount for our customers too - It was good enough to do an advertised special).

They must have been selling for an incredible loss. They would easily flip on eBay after a bit of time.

      • I'd guess their wholesale price would have been about $15… So yeah, it would have been a loss for them on this one.

We spent lots of money with them over time. I guess you win some, you lose some.

Cellarmasters gift cards used to be 10% off through API rewardgateway. Nothing unusual about that, but for the fact that the same gift card was also recognised at Woolworths, BigW, etc.

So it was effectively 10% off Woolworths, probably purchased over $10,000 of it and used it on groceries, opal card topups etc. before they patched the loophole.

Had free shipping and 50% off most items including sale items on fangear for a few years. I sold over 350 all blacks children jerseys on fb/gumtree/eBay with a cost to me of $10. Drop shipping NRL marvel jerseys with a profit of approx $43 per unit pre PayPal tax. Turnover was close to $100,000 in 2 years

    • -3

And how did you explain all that to the taxman, or I suppose you didn't at all did you if you sold it on facebook and gumtree.

Also there's sometimes I'll go to submit a deal while out in the field, and I take the photo and stuff and then it comes up with this red "NOT A DUPLICATE" thing or whatever, it's always something with OZB. Anyway I just give a frustrated sigh and close the page, sometimes you have to cut your losses. Sunk cost fallacy teaches you that you shouldn't necessarily be afraid to just abandon what you're doing just because you've invested time or money into it thus far.

This would have been 8-9 or so years ago. Telstra had a deal on the Motorola Defy+ android phone for $99 (it had been $260-$300). I ordered one, it arrived a couple of days later, during which time I did some research.
The Defy+ was easy to unlock from Telstra and it came with KitKat, but it was pretty simple to install an updated custom ROM. So I did all that and it worked great, in fact, it did just about everything my BIL's $500 iPhone 4 did at the time, which got me thinking.
I found some screen protectors at Officeworks for $1 for 3, so I bought a bunch of those and Amazon had oversize batteries that gave the phone 2 days of power – and they came with an oversize protective case.
I rang back Telstra and ordered more phones, but they would only sell me 3 at a time. So I made 4 orders, for a dozen phones. I unlocked and customised the ROM on each, and advertised the first one on eBay as 'ideal tradie's phone'. It went for $260, about $100 more than it owed me.
The remaining phones, all with the big batteries and cases, went for $250-$275. My wife thought I was nuts at the time, but didn't by the time I'd finished.

I made just under 2K doing this and a mate made roughly 1200? can't remember exactly how much he made.

I told a few other people, but they didn't believe / didn't bother doing it.

Ok so pretty much when UBANK was new they had some promotion 'Buy the Herald sun and get 20 dollars credit to your UBANK account'. I read the TC's and C's closely and couldn't see anything stating that this was one per customer, or that it was only for a new customer ect ect. + They also had a chance for like a jackpot code for 10K or something crazy like that.

So originally my plan was to go all out and just preorder hundreds of news papers but chickened out later in the week in case it didn't work. So 5amish on a Sunday my mate and I started driving around in separate suburbs to all the servos and started buying herald suns and redeeming the codes, bang 20 bucks after 20 bucks. What slowed me down was my credit card company putting a block on my CC at the fourth petrol station as they thought there was a thief with my card, and the fact that I had to go through each paper, ring the missus and spam codes while she inputted them online.

So for 2K I roughly got 100 herald suns before the max amount of 'money' had been claimed once normal people started waking up and claiming their free money with the news paper. I got my money without really doing anything it just appeared in my bank account a few weeks later, my mate had to chase it up with them and they weren't happy that he claimed 1200 worth but they couldn't show him it was against the TC's and C's and eventually paid him as well.

    • That's brilliant, love the effort.
What'd you do with the 100 herald suns afterwards?

Mine was by accident. The Chatswood Harvey Norman store was closing down, so I bought a demo Rowenta stick vacuum cleaner (RRP 399) for $130. It stopped working a month in, so I took it into the Gordon store under warranty. Not only did they exchange it for a brand new one, but there was a running promotion of $50 cashback on Rowenta, so all in all I got a $399 vacuum for $80.

Certain online clothing retailer was running a 50% off promotion which worked on gift cards

You couldn't buy a giftcard with a giftcard but you could buy the GC at 50% off and use it to buy clothes at 50% off for a 75% saving overall

Flagged it with their support team who removed GCs from the promo but allowed me to keep/use them as it was too much of a hassle to refund

Not related but I’ve got 2 to share.
    1. Bought and Paid for a Sony 4k tv at HN for about $2k and went to pick it up from their collection point at the rear of the store. The kind man gave me an OLED TV worth $6k. And also helped me load it in the car :)

    1. Bought a graphics card from amazon UK for about $350. Got delivered but for some reason my Amazon account said it was still pending delivery. I contacted amazon who apologised and refunded the whole amount + $50 Amazon gift voucher.

    :)

My little brother once found a Drum of Chupa Chup Lollipop (1000 in a Drum) for 5 cents at Big W. The manager had to clear it but as it was the price scanning at the register they honoured it. Went back the next day and it was fixed.

Pretty sure he sold them for 50 cents each at school for the next 6 months, made a solid return on investment for a 15 year old at the time.

  • Toys r us used to give out free rewards pts for new sign up, each kids birthday for up to 4 kids and baby show check ins. IIRC you can get $40~50 credits under a rewards account with no spending at all. Maybe that partly explains why they went insolvent.

    • Another national chain store (this one is too big to fail, good for them) used to have a bug with their POS system. You can redeem rewards pts at checkout, pay partially by card/cash/giftcards until there is a 3 cents balance left. At that point, the POS is doomed to an endless loop. All cards payments have already been taken, but rewards points redemption is only processed when the full payment has been finalized. If you force reboot the POS system, there is no record of the transaction at all so there is no way to refund the partial card payment. If you prefer not to wait for the reboot, it is time to pull out ur purse of 5 cent coins and tell the cashier to keep the change.
They never caught up with this bug and it only disappeared when they had a whole POS system redesign.

A credit card company had a cashback offer on making payments to a health insurance provider which happened to be the one I was already with. Chatime app used to let you sign up as a new member without verification and get 2 milk teas for the price of one ($5). Me and my mates rorted that for so long. Good times.

EDIT: And once, the price boards at Maccas showed all large Double-"insert patty name" burger meals for $2.50! Must've been an issue at head office because the store staff couldn't fix it. They tried turning the boards off but we used phone remote control apps to turn them back on. I must've eaten 3 double fillet-o-fish burgers that night :')

I ran a Google Adwords campaign that targeted anyone that searched for Hello Fresh 'coupon' related terms. Users would click my ad, they would get $50 off, I would get $50 referral credit. A win-win. It worked really well before and leading up to coronavirus lockdown and managed to rack up over $2000 in referral credits before I paused it. This reduced our shopping expenses for nearly 6 months until the company noticed my big balance and suspended the account. They've since implemented some bot that detects when a big influx of referral credits are received in a short time period and updated their policy to explicitly ban this method.

    • +2

LOL I did something like this once. I registered "bit.ly/bookdepository" and pointed it to a redirect on my website, which would earn me a commission for traffic referral if the user made a purchase. Then I ran ads on FB for students, sci-fi nerds, etc. to try and earn those precious affiliate dollars. I even bought stock photography to run with the ads.

For whatever reason it didn't pan out. Maybe it was still early days on FB and their targeting was crap or something, but I barely earned back what I spent, and over the years they (all parties involved) have tightened the noose on that kind of thing (e.g. bitly has a preview that shows you the destination URL, so it doesn't look as legit as it used to), plus the book depository referral program imposed various rate limits (both minimums and maximums for traffic referral).

Made almost $50,000 in this pandemic buying and selling something that was in high demand in Canberra but has good supply in Sydney, due to the lock down, I was able to sell the things almost 3 to 4 times the cost. All I had to do was driving between Canberra and Sydney, but I had valid reason as my parents living in Sydney lol.

Still remember driving 2am alone in the entire highway between Sydney and Canberra back in March/April, not a car in sight in the entire 2 hour drive. Fun times.

Then I put the money in stock when Qantas and webjet tanked bottom, made a healthy six figure from this pandemic from few weeks of work. (if I selling my stocks now and realise the gains)

Funny that you get negged for profiteering specifically because of the circumstances.

The arbitrage game has been around since forever. There even used to be people who earned enough to fly to and from Asia to buy various products (e.g. toys and gadgets) and resell them locally on eBay, Gumtree, etc. I just didn't have the knack for selling but I would've loved that lifestyle prior to getting married, having kids and settling down.

I think these days the game consists more of them running drop shopping services from some beach resort in Bali instead.

    • that's awesome. what was the item?

      • +1

Obviously I can't not disclose that. Because you can still arbitrage it, it's just the price are closer parity now given lockdown are virtually non existent between Canberra and Sydney now than back in March/April, so less profit. And very few people know about it or was doing it because the risk of big fine involved in driving between Sydney and Canberra during lockdown.

          • @summerz: No, there was lockdown between NSW and ACT, Murrays cancelled all their route between Sydney and Canberra, only NSW link trains operated during lockdown.

In a lot of ways, this discussion reminds me of IT vulnerabilities and zero-day exploits and the bug bounty industry, LOL. There are active, exploitable bugs in the wild (no co-incidence that a lot of them are IT related), and they remain unpatched.

Only difference is there's no bug bounty program being offered. Maybe the retail industry should all get together to work something out with OzBargain to pay people for exposing these flaws haha…

  • Lego Sian - coupon code resulted in free item
Westpac ATM's - didn't need the correct pin to access funds, any pin would work with a sequence that seemed to bypass the check. Asked about bounty, they said no. I stupidly still explained how the exploit worked. Should have gone on ACA or something but who knows how the story would be spun.

Years ago I had a Virgin Money credit card (back when it was partnered with Westpac) and I had previously had a Virgin Mobile contract but had recently changed to a different carrier. One month I accidentally paid my credit card balance to my old phone bpay details (~$1300). I rang them up and told them the story and they reversed the payment, but, their billing system must have had a maximum reversal amount of $1000. So, I got my $1300 back, but the Virgin Mobile billing system thought they'd refunded me $1000. For a year or two I'd occassionally get statement letters from them telling me I had a positive balance. Eventually someone rang me and wanted to get the money off the books, I told them I didn't have a service with them any longer so had no way to 'spend' it; they cut me a cheque for the ~$300.

  • +1

Going back over 15 years, you used to be able to buy prepaid mobile credit at Target when they had 12.5% off storewide. Virgin Mobile had a glitch were you could reuse a prepaid voucher to top up a different account - so after you'd topped up you could give the recharge number to a friend to use.

At Rays they had premium outdoor chairs, normally something like $79 on major clearance as $9 - possibly a pricing error, but they never flagged it. I bought some, used them for years on many camping trips, and sold them on Gumtree for $20 each.

The way people behave here I've stopped posting deals. In the past I've been abused and argued with for posting a deal with an attached detailed and reasonably unbiased review of the product I was posting about, on the basis that it was too simple to warrant a review. And then I was abused and argued with by another person because the review wasn't detailed enough for their liking (which was unreasonable - detail level was very good). And no I was in no way affiliated. Why would I continue to bother?

    Downvote away.

A couple of years ago, had a great way of converting prepaid Eftpos gift cards to cash. It was in the glory years of getting 3 Amex points/ $1 supermarket spend and when you could buy the prepaids with discounted E gift cards. It almost became like a job, driving around purchasing PP Eftpos cards at Woolworths. Got sick of being asked why I wanted over $1k of cards, have I read the sign about scams, I'll need to get the manager etc. Just ended up becoming too time consuming, purchasing them and cashing them and trying to work full time. Went on some awesome business class world travels with the family and still have a couple of million points sitting around waiting to be used. Damn Covid.

  • Well mine turned out to be something that I did actually share but turns out there was an error on the site and it was taken down before anyone else (here) could avail. Back in 2015 Deals Direct had a 50% off sale - I think it might have been sitewide or maybe just certain items but anyway Pet items were included. I found one of those huge cat tree tower thingos that was down from about $100 to $49.98. Splashed across the page was also Free Shipping. Bargain - as I think postage for this item (to me anyway) would have been about $50ish. I placed my order and then posted all details on here but someone here not long later posted and said there was no Free Shipping when they went to the site. I went back and sure enough all the Free Shipping graphics were gone. I wondered if DD would contact me about it but they never did. I still have my cat tree 5 years later and it's had a lot of use from my cats and over 100 foster cats over time. I was probably not the only person to get an order in before the Free Ship error was realised but DD sure got onto it quickly. I did wonder at the time if they had spies on here watching to see what bargains we post from them as it was no time at all from when I made my post to someone finding out Free Shipping was removed.

  • This is a glitch/ hack of Myers website which used to be notoriously even more poorly setup than it is.

Whenever I found an item (mostly Lego) that was listed as OOS, there was a way around this.

If you clicked on any of the links at the bottom of the product page, that took you to a different department and then the back button, the product would be available to add to the basket and successfully purchased.

I always managed to buy items that were out of stock, however they were usually shipped from all over the country.

I couldn't have been the only one doing it but it was a well kept secret as it worked a few years.

  • Not a purchase bargain per say, but rather a monthly competition that was poorly advertised. I found on the company website a competition for 10-20 coins in a “timezone arcade style”

I won 3 months in a row and got my mates into it after and for 6 months we won all the prizes. At that point the owner/manager is visibly annoyed and to think about it he was a bit racist, insinuating I must be hacking or something. We got annoyed and didnt enter the competition or frequent that establishment from then on.

    It closed 1 year later.

might be about 8-10 years ago now, but Eithad introduced a bid for upgrade system.

Learning how to read basic HTML, JavaScript and how to use browser devtools is a great investment. Not even for the h4x, but in general. Sometimes sites fail in stupid ways and you can often "fix" your way around it.

Another hacky one I can think of was when Entertainment Book and the Woolies Gift Card portal used to "lock" your email address to the member address sent to it by the EBook site. All I had to do was change the email address to my own using devtools, and it would be accepted. So I just borrowed my mum's account and didn't have to buy my own book (this was before Cashrewards and Shopback and everyone else started offering them).

  • Not exactly a deal. But it was a $90 CB from a popular cashback site. Bought a lemon laptop from Amazon and had returned it after it was impossible to repair. 3 months had passed and $90 was in my account for free.

Before when lottoland was offering Keno they gave a promo where i could get 35% off my total cart. It didnt specify that Keno was excluded and it didnt specify how many times i could use the promo. So i was placing single bets on all 80 keno numbers per game and guaranteed to win every time. Effectively if i was to bet $1 for each number i would be spending $80 to win $60, however with my promo code i was only paying $52 to win $60 each time. Of course i wasnt just betting $1 for each number :)

I spent a whole weekend doing this and made a quite a bit from them. After this they updated their future promos to exclude Keno and to only limit one use per account.

Another bug i found before was on bet365. Awhile ago, when you could place live bets without any contact with an operator, i found that there was a slight delay between the odds updating and the actual live play. I would place my bet - watch the live play and if my player lost their point i would cashout before the odds updated or let it ride if they won the next point. Made a killing from this too before they patched it up by not allowing you to cashout once a point started.

I think like 7 years ago I was googling a discontinued Krispy Kreme donut and ended up on like page 10 of Google that linked me to an irregular page.

I was able to add 12 x cookies and cream donuts for $1.10 each and collected it the next day. Manager asked me how I got this to register and I was like, "not sure, just added the donuts I wanted".

Figured if 100s of people rocked up from ozB, they'd stop honouring it.

  • I got few free stuffs where bought from ebay during lockdown…Normally I requested money back 2-3 weeks after indicated expected delivery date. I understand shipping took longer time. But Aupost was just a mess at that time..some stuffs were lost and some were shipped 1-2 months after..LOL.

4 can pack of alcohol was $18, advertisement sign had “5 for $20”. I grabbed 5 of the four packs, operator said “nah that can’t be right”, scanned 5 and it came to $20. I stood there, obviously it was wrong (was meant to be 4 can pack + extra can they had to the side) and asked her if she 100% wanted to sell this to me.
She said yes, got 5 x 4 packs of ranger szeltzer type grog for $20 bucks

Sent the misso down for another set as soon as I got home.

I actually stood there and asked if she wanted to put it through, felt ok as I was happy if they said no

  • When I used to work for a corporation, street parking was $10 or you can park inside and pay with your salary. I purchased a Westfield gift card, depleted it to $0. Used the gift card to get an all day parking ticket. This was like 10 years ago, I wonder if it still works.
