Your best bargain ever that you kept secret because you didn't want it OzBargained

There's been some interesting deals in the past which have quickly evaporated due to the merchant shutting down the offer after getting OzBargained. One example is the Maccas buy five babycino get any free loyalty coffee in any size of your choice: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/449317. So I'm wondering if there were any killer deals you found in the past that you were just too greedy to share in the fear that you would miss out.

My top one was this: Before COVID, the Velocity Rewards store had a price error for Bose Home Speaker 300. It's usually worth $399 (RRP), but was priced at 2,614 points. If you equate one point to one cent, that's about $26.14. I only found it because I was trying to use up some points before they expire, so set the search to look for items under 5,000 points. I remember seeing a Priceline $10 gift card and the Bose speaker! So my dad and I snapped up one each, thinking that they're not going to honour it, but we would take our chances. Sure enough, 24 hours later, the deal was removed and it returned to the usual price 71,830.points. I never ended up posting it to OzBargain in time because I was hoping the order would first ship before realising the pricing error. I knew as soon as I posted it here there would probably be more than a thousand orders, meaning that no one's orders would ship as they wouldn't be able to fulfil them all. Sorry guys! And who knows, they may have gone into administration more quickly.

Anyone else with similar stories? Size of the deal doesn't matter. I think I got really lucky on this one.

You'd think checkout chicks would become suspicious when you've already taken a photo of the price on your phone. But I do this too when I suspect a price error.

Hopefully they are, but just realise that it isn't coming out of their paycheck and prefer to deliver better customer service.

Velocity is rubbish now…. I transferred 150k to Singapore. Virgin will quickly turn "American" were you will simply be considered as "cattle".

I don't view a free coffee as anything to be excited about. Maybe this is why people elect to keep it to themselves.

Dick Smith was closing down… I purchased many items at excessively reduced prices and immediately placed them on eBay at their original full price. It's amazing how people buy on eBay thinking they got a bargain (even without warranty). I made a killing.

  • Signed up for the eBay plus offer where you pay $49 for a year and they give you a $50 voucher to spend on eBay. They never deducted the money but still gave me the voucher. Used the voucher and transferred the money out of my transaction account. eBay tried for the payment a few days later and it obviously didn’t go through so they cancelled the subscription. Haven’t heard anything from them since.

    • -1

      That's not bargain bud, it's a theft.

    • +1

Same thing happened with me, first time i signed up, i use the voucher immediately as I had to buy something. Few days later, when ebay had to deduct money from my acc, due to certain reasons, didn't have enough money in acc [totally unintentional].After that the membership was cancelled. As i was planning to hold on the membership, asked the customer care again for a voucher and they did give it to me. No questions asked. But the next time when I signed up, i did keep the money in my account, just being ethical.

Not really a deal but a 'stuffup'.

Back when Telstra had those staff plans which we could sign up for.

Ordered an Iphone6 (i think?), and they sent us two.

    • I had a telstra stuffup once. Ordered a sony xperia z5 online, telstra sent the phone then cancelled my plan after dispatching for suspected fraud (because i had an inactive previous pre paid account under another address). Went into the telstra store to sort it out and they said they had no record of my phone being sent to me, so put me on a byo plan instead.

I think one of the main reasons I don't post something on OzBargain is because there are folks here with looser morals than me, who have no shame exploiting loopholes, etc. for personal benefit. I'm not judging them, but if I enable them then it's on my conscience instead of theirs.

Having said that, I once accidentally discovered a loophole with a bricks-and-mortar retailer's online store, where if you make a purchase from their website under specific circumstances and then take advantage of their returns policy and bring it back to a store, you'll make a guaranteed profit. I made ~$100 when I did it - and then some, because of Amex statement credit and cashback - but I had a legitimate reason for returning the item.

    • +1

I bet DJs; so many loopholes I found on their online store when working for them …

    • +3

So to you sharing loopholes is morally inferior to committing refund fraud?

      • +23

It's all about intent, isn't it?

I didn't know ahead of time that this loophole existed. I had a legitimate purpose for returning the item and only discovered it after the fact. It certainly isn't my fault that their process contains this loophole, nor do I have any responsibility or obligation to report it - moral or otherwise.

I highly doubt that <random store clerk> could have done anything about it anyway. What would they have done? Refund me less than what was on the receipt - assuming their system even allowed it - because I told them to? They'd think I was batshit crazy.

I haven't subsequently exploited this loophole again, and I haven't enabled others by not posting about it. As I said, My conscience is clear.

        • For once not having a deal here really feels good. Had I been you, I would have called their store or written about this issue. For conscience sake.

If they corrected, good on them. If not acknowledged or not corrected after a months time, I would heck repeat process for profit and would definitely post here.

    • I accidentally discovered the same loophole too - 100% profit. I called their online store and e-mailed them about the issue but they didn’t seem to acknowledge nor care.

I’m not sure if they’ve since fixed it but I hope they have. In my opinion, exploiting this would be borderline theft from shareholders’ pockets.

    • Sounds like the Bing Lee / TGG ebay store loophole - buy from their ebay store when there's a 20% off promo but the receipt wouldn't show the discounted amount, it would show the full RRP

Ask for a refund in store and they would refund the RRP

I've know of people doing this but I was never game enough to test their refund policy and potentially get stuck with an item I don't want

      • I think you are ripping off either eBay or Paypal by doing that, which hardly makes any sensible ozBargainer feel guilty.

    • yer i saw many a times I could have done this but my line is there and that one i wont cross XD

  • +1

This one time on Big W, there was some discount code, it was like supposed to be $10 off if you spend 30+ or something similar.

However, there was a glitch where lets say you put $30 worth of items + the discount code but then you take away $15, so you have $15 left. It would glitch and take away the $10 anyway so you end up paying $5.

The same is true for $30 + discount code, take away $20 out of the cart, left with $10 but discount applies still and it becomes $0.

I bought a couple items for Click and Collect (ended up getting them), I was going to post it the following day but it was patched by then :/

    • I remember that error.
I ordered 2 VR bundles for $0 by entering the same code multiple times. A glitch on their end. Paid $10 shipping expecting a cancellation email but to my suprise, they were both sent.

      • VR bundles? Guessing it is a different error.

About 6 years ago, Hungry Jacks would give you a voucher if you tipped all 8 in a round.

The voucher was a print-at-home voucher for a free Whopper, and it had no serial number, barcode or anything.

One successful round later, and I reckon I ate about 100 free Whoppers that year. Also, screw you to the guy that said "The Whopper Is The Most Overrated, Boring Burger" - even after that many I still rate them!

Last year our school had a charity event where they gave out free whopper meal vouchers for the kids who participated. A while back Supercheap had a % off sale, I think it was like 20% off sitewide or something but the website stuffed up and was giving massive discounts, something crazy like 80%-90% off. I bought a HEAP of Bowden Own's products but I didn't actually think it would go through. I fully expected to get a "sorry it was a price error" msg and get a refund. To my surprise they honoured it and it went through. My regret was stopping and not buying more gear because I thought it wouldn't go through. Oh well lol

  • +7

Probably more of a hack or abusing a glitch in the system rather than a true bargain. But on the maccas app when they would give you the $5 off promo for using your visa card for an online transaction, well I noticed that if you used it for something that cost at least $5 but less than $6 it wouldn't work on their system for some reason. So they would just give you the item free and then you still had the offer on the app to use again (offer was valid for 7 days)

So I would basically get unlimited free chocolate frappes for a week. I think my record was like 4 in one day but I didn't feel so well that night so I guess I got my comeuppance on that one lol

Went to a MacPac outlet store when they were having 20% off marked prices storewide. Took ~$150 worth of items to the counter and noticed a sign indicating 20% off including gift cards.

Waited until there were no other customers waiting to pay. Put the items on the counter, whipped out my phone and calculated exactly the amount to the cents what I would need on the gift card to pay for 20% off the items. Bought the gift card accordingly, looked at my feet for a few seconds, then looked up and said I want to get these items - and pay with my gift card.

I was recently looking for a laptop. I was highly torn between saving money by forfeiting NVIDIA graphics card and thus getting a decent laptop for $1000 vs getting the best possible deal for a laptop with an RTX card. I didn't want to compromise on the graphics card, I wanted to have the peace of mind that I could game with great graphics if I wanted.

Eventually I found a MSI GL65 Leopard laptop on CentreCom with RTX2070, 16GB RAM, 144Hz screen for only $1999. This price is too low even now after 6 months. At the time of purchase the best price for such specs was $3000, so I was saving a whole grand. Heck, Lenovo and Dell still charge around $4000 for these specs.

I didn't publish this deal on OzBargain because just in case CentreCom made a pricing error and it got abused, they probably wouldn't even honor my purchase. So I kept quiet until I received the laptop and after that when I tried to post the deal, CentreCom had fixed the price.

What about the dude who bought hundreds of half price BBQs on eBay and resold them on eBay during the same promo. Amazing.

    • Funnily enough I bought a BBQ off that guy back when ebay ran that promo. So I bought a weber Q2000 off him for $500 (Ebay covered the $250, so with the 50% discount code I paid only $250). At the time these Q2000 webers were probably going for about $350 so it was around $100 off which was still a bargain.

Anyway this fella that sold all the webers sent out a few group update emails after the promotion finished. According to his group emails he ended up selling over 700 bbqs during that one sale. This guy sold that many bbqs that eBay stepped in to make sure he didn't do a fast one and I believe they took over the distribution of the bbqs to all the buyers.

So after I received some of these group update emails from this guy, I emailed him and got his phone number and gave him my proposal as it was mutually beneficial to both of us. The deal which we agreed upon was to meet up in person (we both lived in Perth), he would give me $350 cash and as far as eBay was concerned I collected the BBQ from him in person. I made $100 profit that day and he would of made about $100 profit once ebay & PayPal took their cut. Win-Win!

      • Haha so cool. The dude is a genius. What a heist!

    • How did that work?

      • +1

I believe that this was the deal that's being referred to.

It sounded like the guy was drop shipping via a major retailer.

E.g. say that the retailer is selling a BBQ set for $700 ($350 after eBay discount), the guy lists the item on eBay for $500 ($250 after eBay discount).

A customer will see that this guy's listing is cheaper than the retailer and will buy it from him, saving the $100.

From the guy's perspective, he will receive $500 (minus eBay and paypal fees) for his sale, and minus his purchase price of $350, he probably ends up making a profit of around $100.

It's a win-win situation for both parties at the expense of eBay who is covering the 50% discount.

        • Oh shit haha xD
Still seems like the logistics of it would be tricky, especially if he's looking to keep it secret from eBay, but that's genius that he pulled it off.

          • @MatrixM: So technically this guy made nearly made $70k if he sold 700 pieces.

            Genius!

  • Earlier this year New Balance was having a sale which coincided with a $20 cashback on $100 spend from CommBank rewards. Only wanted the one tee for $35, but minimum spend for free shipping was $100, so bought an additional item that I planned to return afterwards. Got the $20 cashback from CBA, and 7% off the original total back from Cashrewards :) Around $4 for a shirt with a (rather inflated) RRP of $50, not bad.
