    • Nah, its really up to what you need.

  • I need something so that Medibank slogan stops hurting my brain.

  • So we just sign up for 1 month, get our glasses and get out?

    • Thats what I am planning. or keep it till Jan to get annual renew and grab another 2 pairs.

      • +1

It does not work like that.
The waiting periods are waived off if you have a particular extras as new or if you are still serving the waiting period with your current health provider.

The benefit itself doesn't get renewed if you just switch to Medibank if you already availed from the current provider.

        Happy to stand corrected.

        • I switched from NIB to Westfund last September. At that time I had used all of my optical benefit with NIB. I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to claim optical with Westfund before the end of the calendar year.

I’m not sure if my case is an exception tho?

          • @Fatboy74: Did you inform Westfund that you were with NIB previously? Did you/NIB provide your transfer certificate to Westfund? The new health fund is supposed to adjust waiting periods and benefits based on your private health insurance history. If you did, then you got lucky.

        • So if you don’t have extras and sign up the waiting periods aren’t waived ??

You have to switch from a provider with waiting periods ?

          • @strikerzebra: So if you don’t have extras and sign up the waiting periods aren’t waived ??

In this case the waits are waived and you can use the benefit immediately.

            • @SriAvi: That’s what I’m confirming , I have no cover at the moment but I need to go to the dentist, while someone else said only if you are with another provided then waiting periods are waived

  • Will be in need of glasses in the next few months so I've been waiting for a deal like this…I've got hospital only cover @ AIA but not that keen to switch since Vitality..looks like this will do nicely, thanks OP :)

  • Whatabout dental.

  • Is new member who has not been with medibank in the last 60 days? That would be easy to fulfill?

  • Sorry if this is a dumb question but can you have insurance with 2 providers?

    • You can split your hospital cover and your extras cover with 2 different insurers.

      • 2 policies with 2 providers?

  • The question is, what are the fixed amount rebates for practitioners outside of their percentage based rebate members choice network?

    • +1

Sht. Lower than their member providers - which total BS.

      • +1

Yes BS indeed, and these non member choice fixed rebates are concealed and not available online, in PDS, or in branch. This is most likely deliberate as a false advertising in a way where the cover is called 75% etc. The only way to find out these rates is to ask about each individual item number billed. For exampl on Top 75, osteo rebate is only $33.50, a far cry from 75% when they typically charge $100.
        Fixed non member choice rebates for Top 75 QLD are;
        Chiro $46.60 / 33.50 (initial/ subsequent)
        Physio $49.20 / 41.30
        Osteo $33.50 / $33.50
        Remedial $44.30 / $29.90 (long / >30 min)
        Psych $73.50 / $60.20

  • I personally got health partners gold hospital no extras for $200 pm just to get my bariatric surgery paid for :) had to wait 12 months first of course but saved me like $14,000 if I was to go self funded…. That's the one and only time I needed health insurance because Medicare and pension card pays for everything else :)

    • Glad it worked out for you. That’s a lot of money saved.

  • Does anyone know which health funds give the most rebates for regular dental check ups? Is this information readily available without having to ask the dentist to check?

  • Does this wave waiting times for someone who needs cataract surgery?

  • Good Idea to get the Top Extras with 90%??

  • Was debating whether I should go with bupa after hearing of the woolies deal but after calling them up, it is not as great as I thought. I would only save like $5 per month and I need to get hospital cover too. All I really wanted was physio, contact lens and dental cover.

Medibank probably a better choice for me
