I’ve been holding out for this reduction! Cheers!

Did you hit the crack pipe before typing that or what?

    Great price!

I would just note the way this Epic version launches via Epic store, then the Origin app is annoying.

It also doesn't work with SteamVR (and you can't manually add it), which means you can't play wirelessly using Virtual Desktop on the Occulus Quest 2. But it does work via the link cable.

    • +8

It does work with SteamVR, you have to make sure to force close the Oculus background services first

      • +1

Oh that's really helfull to know! I tried for ages to get it work.

      • I had to refund as the VR mode is a buggy mess. Doesn't run at 90fps due to a limitation in the game engine. Its a shame as it looks great, only when you turn the ship it judders like crazy. Look into that if you are planning to run it in VR on a PC.

I hope they fix that as VR mode looked awesome, and the game played sweet on a monitor otherwise. I'll buy it again if they do.

        • I hear they fixed the frame rate issues in the patch they just released, although the patch notes aren’t out yet.

          • @Tatari: How long ago was that? I only got it a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty bad in VR with the Vive. Smooth as silk when turning your head but as soon as you move the ship around, tons of reprojection like judder.

I've looked up the problem when I had it and it seems the game engine is only designed for 60fps, and runs at 45fps instead of 90 in VR.

You can lock it to 60fps with a workaround but that's still only 2/3 the framerate it should be, which makes it pretty noticeable to me compared to any other VR game.

As I said before, if they can get it running at 90fps in VR properly, it'll be an awesome game to play and I'd get it back in a heartbeat.

        • I can't say I noticed. I'm absolutely loving VR with it. Using Windows MR.

      • Hold up, will this install the Oculus platform even though I am playing only via WMR? That's nasty if true.

        • +2

Nah the Epic store version is just compatible with both Oculus and SteamVR, it’ll launch whatever you have installed already.

    • +3

Yeah having 3 game launchers required to be installed and open just to play in VR using my WMR headset is frustrating

      • +1

Yeah it's so annoying and slow. You can't even just skip Epic and open straight in Origin.

        • pretty confused by your comments.

          1. you can play it in VR using steamVR. You just have to enable it in the menu.
          2. you can launch it directly via origin.
          • +1

            @plentifoo:

you can launch it directly via origin.

Yes you can, but you still need to have Epic running or origin will have to launch Epic first…I refunded my copy when I found this out

          • @plentifoo: 1 - You can click it via Origin but it then opens Epic as well. So you need both launchers open, it's annoying. The Steam version runs straight off Steam.

2 - Yeah apparently you can get it working with SteamVR if you force close the Oculus background services first as @Tatari says above (I haven't tried this). I don't know if it would work with Virtual Desktop though as that requires Occulus stuff to run.

Dammit, epic you just made me spend actual money with you. I just refunded this on Steam last night as it was a bit glitchy but fun. At $22 I'll wait on patches.

    • steam is by far the better way to own this game though, especially for VR purposes.

      • +1

I don't do vr, are there any other advantages considering they both run through origin?

  • I'm really tempted with this though I do worry about the longevity for the online community if no new maps, campaigns etc. are released.

  • To this date, my star wars squadrons game still doesn't even start past the easy anti cheat splash screen. What a joke.

    • Curious why I got negged on this?

      • probably because it's due to user error, like a bad installation or the way your computer is setup. little to no one else has that problem.

  • Does anyone know if I can remote download with epic?

  • Does this actually activate on your origin account so you can launch through origin without epic?

    • Yes i have it and when i went to install it launched Origin for me (assuming it'll ask to install origin if you dont have it already installed)… i paid more than this though .. booo i think its about $7 cheaper than when i bought it

      • Dang this is a good deal. I actually lost my coupon from the last time i bought the game with it as I didnt really want it at that price, and now i cant buy it at this price. wtf

        • lol yeh i used my coupon .. i had 2 and just used it the other day on Control … im a sucker for coupons it seems.. sigh

  • Crysis Remastered also at $14 bucks with coupon :o

  • Does this game have ocenia servers? or will we be stuck with 150+ ping?

  • Can anyone vouch for this game for someone who does not like star wars? i was really on the fence because it looks cool but i wondered if i would get an enjoyment out of it since i have no interest in star wars. Anyone?

    • +1

No. I'm a massive fan and I bought a HOTAS setup for this and FS2020 but this is buggy right now.

      • oh ok then probs better i give this one a miss then. thanks heaps for the feedback.

    • +3

Agree with the other poster. I was so ready to love this game but its a mess. Starfighter assault mode in BF2 is better done IMO. It might be worth it at this price in the hopes itll get better, but I feel ripped off paying $35 on launch tbh

      • yeah might give it a miss then. cheers.

    • +3

      I reckon it plays exactly like the 1990's X-wing & Tie-fighter series.

If you liked them or the wing commander series then this should be a blast.

  • Thanks OP! Glad I waited to get this, $22 is a steal.

  • +1

How is this so cheap already? Did it bomb?

    • Well it's 25% off, the voucher is epics doing

  • +1

This is also $37.46 in steam store.

  • any idea what the cheapest price has been for ps4?

  • Really hope this gets a next gen patch for PS5 😩

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for best value budget joystick to play this? Not going to be getting into any serious flight sims…

    • +1

Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One is serving me well in Ace Combat 7, Flight Simulator and Elite Dangerous.

  • +1

i almost pulled the trigger last night, so glad i waited to the last minute the voucher expires :D

  • Couldn't play co-op with my mates. The matchmaking is terrible. Asked for a refund as i had less than 2 hours of game time.
