Tiger Airways Australia: 4TH BDAY Sale! (Jetstar Pricematch)

450

Yes they are one of the most pathetic airline's out there considering their track record this year, but these are good for price matching on Jetstar who will beat the following prices by 10%, minus the credit card fees. Considering Tiger's limited network, you wont get much cheaper than this until they ramp up to full capacity next year.

  • dam just booked 10 minutes ago syd to gold coast.

    • +1

why doesnt tiger fly sydney to gold coast if it flys melbourne to gold coast?

      • I'm guessing it's something to do with cheap airspace at melb airport.

        • Apparently the airspace is cheaper the lower you approach :-)

      • +1

Melbourne's the only base they operate out of for the moment, their operations at Sydney, Avalon and Adelaide were scaled back to… nothing

  • +3

    Not bad prices.

Just thought I would add that you can't price match with Perth to/from Melbourne as the departure time seems to be the same on every day and isn't within 1 hour.

    • +2

I know Tiger used to have a red eye flight now its all morning runs ……. damn Tiger and their reasonable flight times.

  • +8

Hmmm.. tempting to neg this simply because it's Tiger. The two occasions I tried booking with them, they cancelled the flights last-minute while we were on the way to the airport. Two messed up holidays, and not even an apology from them.

  • +4

I flew to gold coast two weeks ago with them flight left early melb to gg and ontime gg to melb, no complaints for my first flight with them… just habe to watch your hand luggage weights…staff very friendly

  • +6

    I love tiger.

I've never had a problem with them. Infact, the last 2 trips, they've either landed on time or early!

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd rather fly with them than jetstar any day of the year.

    • +1

      ive had the same experience.

  • Funnily enough, with all that QANTAS stuff going on, Tiger actually came out on top this month in terms of reliability. 85% of Tiger departures left on schedule, followed very closely by Virgin who had 83%, QANTAS in third with 76.84%, and Jetstar fourth with 75.8% :P (source: news.com.au)

  • +1

Tiger no longer fly from Adel?

    • I'm wondering the same…

      • Yep, and they cut Canberra routes too. This all happened after they were grounded by the authorities- excuse was they needed to focus on fewer routes (maybe the most profitable ones?)

        • +2

Can't say I'm too fussed with the lack of Tiger. Don't want to be appearing on an Air Crash Investigations episode :)

  • Might sort some AFL grand final flights for next year, looks a great price, thanks.

  • I would think now is the best time to fly tiger and qantas, both airlines out to prove a point. Should mean competetive pricing and all attempts made to ensure accuracy of departure times

  • Upvote for JetStar pricematch, blanket downvote rule due to Tiger Airways.

  • Excellent find. I fly between MEL and BNE very frequently. Have flown with Tiger numerous times before, without problems. Not sure why they have such a bad rap, but I find them pretty reliable, and almost always <$100 (the obligatory bargain part!).

    • +4

Even if they haven't yet, when (not if, when) they cancel your flight a week before its due to leave and you have to rebook with another carrier at 10x the price (because now you can only get super expensive fares), you'll understand.

If you have a lot of flexibility, no prepaid obligations at your destination etc - it's fine. But when you're working fulltime (so holidays are precious, and require pre-planning) or have a whole family to get from a to b, it's not worth taking the chance.

When they cancelled my flight, it wasn't like Virgin/Qantas/Jetstar where they just put you on the next available flight.

  • I've had no dramas flying Tiger in the past and I have no hesitation flying with them again.

  • I got a ripper deal on a price match with Jetstar in early November. Thanks OP. Too bad the Melb - Perth doesn't apply due to the time difference.

  • +1

Read between the lines, if a company gets shut down by the airline regulator - it's usually for a pretty good reason. Excellent price, but I don't want to be around when a) A Tiger airways plane disintegrates or b) they cancel your flight. The former of the two presents my greatest concern and it will take a long time before I trust them enough to use their service.

    • +1

I'm sure they would have fixed up their safety issues to be back in the air but their shocking service problems remain. Earlier this year I booked and paid for return Tiger flights for the family. They cancelled the service and it took 6 months and an intervention from Consumer Affairs to get our money back. We had to cancel our holidays, losing accommodation deposits. Seriously people if time and certainty of service means anything to you, think hard before you risk your money on this mob.

  • Will Jetstar match these while it's For stripes members or only after it goes fully public?

    • +2

Has to be when it goes public - when you call for a pricematch the operator actually goes to the tiger website and attempts to buy the ticket to verify its price + availability, if they can't see it publicly they won't match it.

  • +4

I've booked tiger about 4 times because it was so damn cheap. Two times the flight was terribly late (hours), one time they cancelled the flight and I had to rebook an expensive jetstar flight and the only other time when the flight was ok, they were unbelievably rude at the check-in and kept sending people to the back of the line again, to re-queue, for various reasons.
Tiger? No, thank you. Never - ever - again. I wouldn't mind if they disappeared. And given their safety track record it might only be a question of time.

    • +1

What sort of reasons would cause you to be sent to the back of the check-in queue?

I've never seen this before in my life, and I've flown quite a bit although never with tiger.

    • +1

Safety record? you mean what the media tells you. Jetstar and virgin aint much better.

  • +1

Thanks Op - the price match works a treat. Used this last week for Mel->GC $250 rtn for 2 ppl. Original Jetstar price was $520.

Also having flown Tiger numerous times, they're fine. The only thing is when they change their schedule, it's really hard to get hold of them if the new flights times don't suit. And the Tiger Lounge @ Melb is awesome - byo beers & sit out the front on the milk crates….delays? no problem!

  • +2

I hate tiger cause it ruined my Easter. I paid flight and all accommodation two months prior to Easter. Then we were told that flight was cancelled just 1 hour before flight without any explanation when we're on the way to the airport, and Tiger will do NOTHING about it but refund the flight only which even took six weeks. The customer service guy was quite rude and impolite on the phone. So I lost my money for all accommodation and holiday because this CRAPPY company. This is my first and will be the last time with tiger.

We all accept the fact that cheap with less service. But Tiger does NOT have honesty and respect even a little bit. This kind of company is not supposed to be survived. At the end, suck birthday to Tiger.

    • +2

"….We all accept the fact that cheap with less service…."

Absolutely. These are no frills air lines meaning no free food, no comfy seats, less leg space etc etc.

However, we don't expect frills, they must deliver the core service that we pay for ie transporting us. If they can't even deliver that, I wonder why they are allowed to operate.

Tiger has no back up plans and routinely cancel flights and leave passengers stranded.
The "punctuality" percentage does not show the true danger of Tiger. Suppose Qantas, Virgin and Tiger have roughly the same 85% punctuality. The unlucky 15% Qantas and Virgin passengers will get the next flight with the same airline, which means a delay of a few hours.

In contrast, the unlucky 15% Tiger passengers will get the _next available Tiger flight__, which is more than likely to be delay of a day or two.

Flying with Tiger is risky because, if you fall in to the 15% of cancellations/long delays, you will have to say goodbye to your travel plans.

      • Exactly right, I was offered one day (24 hours) delay by tiger which is total unreasonable. I was going to Melbourne city at the first day, then Port Campbell and Phillip Island in three different locations. One day delay means nothing. I did ask tiger to cover me in the next morning so I still could make Port Campbell and Phillip Island at least, but unfortunately tiger said NO WAY. The solution was either get refund or pay $1200+ for 4 person flight from Syd to Mel. I even thought if took train to Mel cause I just didn't wanna unpack then.
I really surprise why this ridiculous company is allowed to operate for four years.

        • True.

But, there is a bright side of Tiger as well.
          Jet Star price match. ;-)

  • can you pricematch today, since it's not open to everyone yet?

Tiger has no back up plans and routinely cancel flights

    report October 2011.

    Tiger airways cancellations 0
    Jetstar 53 (0.9%)
    Virgin 44 (0.4)

    http://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/14/Files/BITRE%20OTP%20…

    • That is a good sight.

Tiger had a so streamlined flight schedule to maximise the flying times of their planes.
While it cut the costs, it also caused them cancel flights for seemingly unrelated events.

Eg. Bad weather in Tasmania could cause a cancellation of a Canb-Adl flight (because the same plane is used and no back up plans).

      This was from April.
      http://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/14/Files/BITRE%20OTP%20…

Tiger Cancellations (5.5%) and On time departures (61%) were worse by a good margin.

      • +1

Indeed….. I suspect Tiger is currently likely to be the best it has ever been, as it tries to claw back ground lost.

I've travelled with them a few times and never had any dramas at all. I think having them in the marketplace has to be a good thing. Without competition, companies can charge what they like.

  • To the people that got flights cancelled, did you have travel insurance?? would travel insurance have paid for you to use another airline?

    • Depends on the reason for cancellation.

Travel insurances do not generally cover if airliners cancel/delay flights for operational reasons (Exception: They still cover if the passengers are going to miss a predetermined event like a wedding, sporting event etc). They cover for bad weather, flood etc etc.

Tiger generally doesn't say the reason for cancellations/delays and I guess that "bad weather in Tasmania" would not be an acceptable reason for the travel insurance provider for a cancellation of a Melb-Bris flight.

    • I took out travel insurance with Tiger but it only ocvers you for another flight with them at another time (i.e. not another airline). In my case the cancelled the service entirely (ie.. they no longer fly the sector) and the insurance was useless. I suppose you get comprehensice travel insurance from another company but it sort of defeats the purpose of getting a cheap domestic ticket with a crappy airline like Tiger if you then have to go out and get travel insurance.

  • thanks for the info surm, I have been buying travel insurance because of this reason, maybe I need to investigate a little further, I was under the impression that if it was cancelled or delayed for 12hours you were entitled to claim on your insurance…

    • You'll find the comments regarding travel insurance useful.

      http://flighthacker.com/2009/09/29/tiger-airways-is-it-the-r…

Q: In case a flight is cancelled and the airline is unable to offer another flight within a reasonable time, do you offer your insurance policies that cover expenses for flying with another airline?

      ———————————————-
      Worldcare

      4 ADDITIONAL EXPENSES
WE WILL ALSO PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

We will reimburse your reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses if a disruption to your journey arises from the following reasons.

a] Your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted because of a strike, riot, hijack, civil commotion, weather or natural disaster.

      4.2 WE WILL NOT PAY

e] We will not pay for delays or rescheduling by a bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority.

There is no provision to claim under this policy if the airline has caused the delay through rescheduling, maintenance/repairs/faults industrial action other than a strike or corporate takeover.
      ———————————————-
      1Cover

This depends on the reason the flight was cancelled. If it is cancelled or delayed because of strikes, riots, hijack, civil commotion, natural disaster or weather conditions then we will cover your alternative transport costs. However the cancellation is the fault of the airline, for example mechanical breakdown, or other booking issues, you will not be covered.

      ———————————————-
      Columbus Direct Travel Insurance

Unfortunately we do not have a cover for cancelled flights under our policies.

We do cover cancellation; however you would need to be cancelling the entire trip, rather than just a flight.

  • QUESTION : What's the luggage allowance ???

  • In my opinion if you have travel at a time when other flights maybe difficult to get e.g. a Friday, do not book Tiger. One trip from Sydney to Melbourne went ok… the other one was horrendous.

Timing - Aug 10, Friday afternoon flight to Melbourne cancelled with no explanation, everyone was scrambling to Jetstar/Virgin to purchase tickets which were grossly inflated… missed out reservation in Melbourne that I had booked months beforehand. They gave a refund of a cheap fare but that did not make-up for the cost of the Qantas fare that I had to pay to get down there (everyone was rushing to Jetstar/Virgin as they were in the same terminal… Qantas was slightly cheaper but still many times the cost of the fare. Also they take about 4-6 weeks to process the refund. People were livid as there was no explanation whatsoever.

The return flight I thought perhaps would be redeeming, however, it was delayed about 4 hours. The extraordinarily bad thing was that other flights were delayed even more than us… some people going from Melbourne to Adelaide had already been there 6 hours and there was additional 2 hr+ wait. The small terminal was squashed with so many people, it was hard to find a spot even on the ground to sit on. Speaking to the Adelaide passengers they were exhausted after being angry for so long - They gave the people a small meal allowance that couldn't even buy half the things at the shop (c.$8) with most of the things sold out after a few hours given how packed it was. Only thing which kept me distracted was a fight in the terminal - guess people were bored and irritated - with the Australian Federal Police jumping over people to break it up.

My thoughts - pay the extra 10% at Jetstar… there's some peace of mind and they have switched me over to a Qantas flight when it has been cancelled which is a bit of comfort.

I dont understand why ppl complain about a $45 airfare, you cant drive it for that much so why cry when something goes wrong and they don't have multi million dollar back up plans? another aircraft on stand by is a multi million dollar back up plan. Do you expect to be able to get 100% mobile reception everywhere you go? do you even check where the blackout spots are? if the answer to these questions is NO then why do u expect a $45 airfare to be the same as a $350 airfare? if your answer was yes then why do you accept the agreements when booking without reading them?

    • +1

OK, here is the deal. You schedule a plan for holiday. You book and prepay some of them like hotel, car, food before one month. Then bang, no flight for you, no reason, no options, nothing else but refund your flight fare. You still can take it easy as "oh, I can't complain because it's cheap".
On the other hand, if dealer sell rubbish product to you, and it's cheap, so you aren't gonna complain, are you? Say dealer sold a crappy car to you on a very cheap price, and it broken down when you rush to an exam or important job interview. You still can say that is fair. Then you win the game and everything. Please go on with Tiger.

      • -2

Would you buy cheap medication expecting it to work the same as quality products? NO. You anticipate that the holiday isn't worth as much as your health and therefore are able to compromise on price. Knowing this don't be surprised when things go wrong. If the holiday is that important then book with someone who will look after you if things change.

In regards to the poorly written car sentence, I wouldn't buy a crappy car and i'm sure a car dealer wouldn't refund my money when something went wrong. you get what you pay for, pay cheap expect crap.

Your last sentence just makes no sense.

        • "…pay cheap expect crap…" hah

        • +2

Would you buy cheap medication expecting it to work the same as quality products?

          Yes - Generics.
The pharmacists ask whether you'd want a cheaper generic drug.

This is the bottom line - while the more expensive branded product could have the superior quality, the cheaper generic one should also have an acceptable level of quality. Otherwise, it will not be allowed to be sold.

What people complain is that Tiger is allowed to operate despite not having an acceptable level of quality according to their opinion.

          "…pay cheap expect crap…"

Bye-bye to cheap Tuesday\Wed\Thur petrol - they sell crap on Tuesdays :-) The best petrol is sold around the long holiday season :-)

People expect an acceptable level of quality in petrol regardless of the price. If a new service chain comes to the market offering cheap petrol, but later turned out that their fuel quality was not acceptable and vehicle stalled, I suppose buyers have a fair claim for compensation.
