Which Is The Best State or Territory in Australia?

Hi Ozbargainers,

Which do you think is the best state or territory in Australia and why?

I personally think that it would have to be South Australia. Adelaide is by far one of the most exhilarating cities in the world. :)

Never been to Tassie, but voted Tassie.

  • I think QLD for the weather and I wouldn't mind retiring up there but it will be a challenge for me to get over how bogan it is, the terrible food relative to Melb/Syd and I think it is state law that everyone must have 1 tat so I would need to get that done, maybe a southern cross on my face. Before then, I follow the money which for me is in NSW. VIC is nice food and lifestyle but no way am I living in that climate. SA / TAS / WA all very nice, just a bit too quiet for me.

    • +2

the terrible food relative to Melb/Syd

I don't believe this to be the case any more. Loads of good eats these days.

    • The weather in Vic is nothing to be proud of, but at least we get some skiing and snowboarding season during the year, pending no climate change.

QLD and NT win with a more consistent type of weather, less need to buy winter clothing and spending money on heating, but a shame nothing much to do there so mental health is a major issue.

      • NSW has the same access to snow, however southern VIC (including Melbourne) was not affected by last years drought.

I would say VIC on balance. If TAS had more jobs I would move there though

    • Lol, i never noticed the tat. Short and t shirt 365 days which we love. Usually try to go to northern hemisphere for dec holidays to get some use out of the winter clothes.

  • Victoria… the Posh Spicegirl.

    Right now? WA.

    QLD #1
    Best Nature
Best City in terms of livability and convenience. People are genuine and polite.
Government that cares about it's people. You often hear sob stories about NSWmen not being able to cross the border to seek QLD treatment. Then when QLD gov ask to amalgamate some of the NSW LAC to accommodate them. NSW refused the offer.
Laid back attitude here, no fake and arrogant sydneysiders and no hipsters with a superiority complex from Melbourne.

  • +1

Each place will have its own ups and downs. Besides, what's "up" for one may be the opposite for another. At the end, you should live wherever works best for you.

Everything is excellent down here in VIC, but I could do with less of the extremely moody weather. And that's not even counting the winter, which comes with the brutally chilly winds that want to rip a hole in your face. But then I weighed up between the bogans or the chilly weather (considered QLD), and have elected to put up with the cold so far.

  • +2

Technically ACT is the best, Tasmania by far the worst

Won't the results mostly reflect the number of Ozbargainers voting on this in each state? Most people will vote for their own state.

Op, you say Adelaide is one of the most exhilarating city in the world… have you actually been outside of Adelaide? 😁

    • -1

have you actually been outside of Adelaide? 😁

I've never been to Adelaide. :)

      • Why the negs? Some people need to lighten up.

There is no wrong answer to this - bar Victoria if you hit Victoria your are wrong

Gotta be careful if you want to pick a fight with the "Education State" my mate.

Before I moved to the ACT 15 years ago, I wouldn't have even given it a look-in. But now, having made it my home, I would honestly never live anywhere else. I know people love to bash Canberra, and I've heard all the public servant/politician jokes, but that's not all we are. It's amazing to walk around our "city" and still feel like you're in a small town. I love the nature, how you can go for a walk almost anywhere (even right in the middle of the "city" sometimes) and see kangaroos. Nothing is more than 30 mins away, and despite some of the unsightly development going on up north, there is so much green. I've travelled the world, and Australia, and I would still rate Canberra as my favourite place to be.

    • +2

Yeah but have you tried getting food out at 9pm?! It was bloody impossible last time I was there!

      • +3

What were you doing out after 9pm? Everybody knows Canberra shuts down before then! ;)

It's actually another reason why I love living here, but I know loads of people who hate that there's no real nightlife.

    • Act Canberra weather is extreme, stinking hot in summer, freezing in winter and too far from the beautiful Australian coastline.

Canberra has very high property prices and high residential rates/land tax bills.

      • And yet I'd still rather live here than anywhere else. :)

        • Yeah I personally would prefer freehold property in other states that pay higher prices for a 99 year land property lease in Canberra.

          • @nightqueen: I'm not planning to live longer than 99 years, so I think it's safe to say my land property lease will expire long after I have. :)

  • +1

    Victoria ftw

  • Tassie Tassie Tassie oi oi oi

  • +5

Title should be "What state is everyone from?"

The votes would still be the same.

  • +2

Voted Victoria out of loyalty and because we've had a shit time recently. I keep coming back to Victoria because it's easier. Have lived in QLD and hated it, lived in Tasmania and loved it. I think I'd like SA, but haven't really been other than passing through a very long time ago. I like the quiet life and hate temperatures over about 22°c.

    • +1

"I like the quiet life and hate temperatures over about 22°c." Oh boy do I agree……

    • I do not hate temperatures but I like 26’c and above, perfect for swimming and diving

  • +2

What? Victoria? No offence but I was born there, lived and grew up in Footscray/Maribynong 😂 I prefer NSW but I prefer QLD over NSW and VIC ☺️😌

  • State of Melbourne with 🍩

  • +10

    ACT.

    • highest life expectancy
    • quality of life rating is one of the best in the world
    • some of the best University's in the world (rank very highly)
    • highest education levels
    • highest median incomes
    • lowest travel time to work (and therefore more personal time/family time/less fuel costs)
    • work/life balance is best in Australia
    • lowest pollution
    • You get all 4 seasons. Cold enough for a fire in Winter, hot enough for a pool in Summer (but not sticky humid hot, dry hot… so much more comfortable, especially at night).
    • literally 10 minute drive to real countryside/nature/bike tracks/whatever
    • 1.5h to beach, 2h to snow, and an Airport that interconnects to anywhere you need to go, but isn't a nightmare to use. Terrific home base for travel.

Only negative is there's not a lot of nightlife, and has an expensive 'entry point' (housing is expensive, but for good reason).
But for raising a young family, there's nowhere better.

Get's a bad wrap for being "boring", but it's probably Australia's best kept secret.

I lived in Sydney for 15 years. Glad I got the hell out of there!
I grew up in Melbourne as a kid, so I have a soft spot for Vic… but just too many damn people now! Traffic levels are off the charts, and daily commute is crazy.
Canberra has all the city conveniences, without the crush of people everywhere.
    Everything is 30min away.

    • Shout out for ACT,

I agree with except the airport bit. Flying to and from Canberra is bloody expensive.

    • +1

Canberra has crazy drivers especially with those diplomatic number plates with diplomatic privileges. They don't have to pay any speeding and parking fines.

      • +1

Wow, you really don't like Canberra, huh? Haha! That's ok, don't move here, and the rest of us will still enjoy it. :)

      • +1

You're right, there are some diplomatic number plates here…. and yes, they can sometimes be crazy.

But I'll take a couple of those around town than all the idiots on the road in every other major city in Australia!!
        Millions of them!!

    • The only standout in your list is the 2hrs to snow!

  • I travelled interstate to Adelaide a few times. Knock off time is 4:30pm there right?

    • Yes, and during covid-times it's 11:30AM to 2:30PM.

    • from?

I've lived in the ACT, WA, NSW and now QLD which my job has taken me there. I have lived in all places for longer than 12 months when I was an adult. After 18, 3 years in ACT, 3 years in NSW, 1 year in WA and 2 years so far in Brisbane.

Apart from 1-2 months of disgusting weather every year and the odd storm that will ruin your house+car, I cannot rate Brisbane highly enough and it will definitely be my forever location (or in the vicinity).

    • Apart from 1-2 months of disgusting weather every year and the odd storm that will ruin your house+car,

Clearly you haven't ventured further north than the South-East Kingdom then! lol

Brisbane is tame compared to NQ and FNQ.

    • 🤲🏻 Go travelling during that 1-2mths. For me, it's fine. There's a/c at work and home.

It's like Asia, stay indoors and go out in the evening when the weather is cooler.

The storms are pretty cool to watch and we need more rain for the farmers!

  • +1

Qld for the beaches and rainforests. But I'd say Victoria next for its wine regions and Melbourne City lifestyle.

    • Also the fact that you don’t have to drive for hours to enjoy the country side. Snow is 3 hours from Melbourne (if you go to Buller) whereas in Sydney you have to drive 5-6 hours to get to the snow. Can’t do day trips. And places like Newcastle are 90-120 mins away. Also no hot springs like Victoria. And the weather is always the same.

      • +2

5 hrs you're still stuck in traffic ahahah

    • +2

Try visiting SA if you like wine regions, biggest wine producing state in Australia with a deep history.

      • McLaren VALE

      • Yes SA wine region is the best in Oz. Though I haven't been to WA.

For nature the best place is Qld and Tassie.

    • Kidding? Barossa, Hunter, Margaret River all >>> Victoria for wines…

      • -1

Since when is the Barossa in Victoria??

  • +1

I can see why the NT has the lowest votes.

    • +1

Getting your shoes stolen by a croc is seriously underrated.

  • -3

Probably any place where labour / Greenies / communist / Marxists / socialists are not in power. At the moment I'd go with NSW.

    • Lol like spinster Gladys hasn’t had her fair share of corruption either.

    • I love Sydney and NSW, but that's despite Gladys The Bulldozer Engine…

  • +2

Poll should be weighted against the total population index of each state by means of percentage

    • The distribution of Ozbargain members [who voted on this poll] may not be representative of the total population index mix.

It's not a serious poll. Just a random forum post.

      • Thanks for your prompt reply. Please make sure the report is delivered no later Monday COB. Your work is essential to official Australia census data. We value effort.

Have travelled heavily for work to every state in Australia. Haven’t been to NT yet. And would have to say QLD, WA then TAS. I grew up in Canberra and moved to northern NSW as a teenager. Live in southern QLD now. May be biased but southern Gold Coast is the place to be. Housing is super affordable, literally live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Have one of if not the best surf beaches in the world, 15 min drive in land and amazing rainforests. Plenty of places to go out and eat and drink now. Please stay away hahaha.

    • Southern Gold Coast here too - great place to live for all the reasons you said. But Queensland as a whole state… not sure if I would say it’s the ‘best’ state.

      • Even out West is pretty amazing. The fresh produce, cattle farms, Bunya, and some stunning national parks.

And anyone heard of Town of 1770? We are very lucky here. So much to see and do and glorious sunshine every day.

The ACT is the best, and also the best kept secret. And I'm a Sydneysider. It's run by a relatively sensible progressive government, and residents here generally are pretty engaged with what's happening in the local and larger community.

However there's a couple of things that UFO kinda alluded to, that the ACT sucks at:

The ridiculous cost of living here — everything is damn expensive and it makes prices in the Sydney CBD seem reasonable or comparable.

The food sucks balls, and you're charged an arm and a leg for it. Okay there are some gems in Canberra (Lolo and Lola, Yarralumla Pide House before they expanded), but generally the food is overpriced trash. Pad Thai here costs $20. A Banh Mi pork roll is $7-10. We need the Hyperloop up and running so that I can hop over to Cabramatta for my daily fix, instead of being ripped off here. To be fair, the high prices are mainly caused by the eye gouging commercial rates, but some places will rip you off because they can.

    • Actually yes, agreed :).

Restaurant food IS overpriced. Melbourne has the best food in the nation, and its not expensive either!

    • -1

Yes high cost of living with expensive food, property prices and high residential rates/land tax. Plus act has a 100 year lease on property so there's no actually no property 'freehold'.

  • +1

    Talk about a subjective vote

    • +1

      Aren’t all opinion polls subjective?

  • +2

Nothing beats NSW. Absolutely nothing beats it

    • +2

cept queensland in origin and …. and … andd

  • I would say a (imaginary) state would be between the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, down to Newcastle NSW would be the best state (if we could choose ofcourse).

    • i agree that most live in imaginary states - nsw people think they can live with out water for instance.. . so presumably they're gonna build some plants with huge energy costs to get round that….

  • NSW seems pretty sweet apart from overpriced Sydney. Near the coast or high up on the hinterland it doesn't get too hot. Nice and green most of the year as well.

Byron bay probably has one of the best climate in the world.

    • Again why SE qld is top, Byron Bay is practically part of us. Only 1hr from GC.

      Love The Farm at Byron.

  • Yes

    • No.

      • Maybe?

  • +3

    I like Victoria.

Said nobody in the last 4 months.

  • Live in Queensland, from NSW, voted WA.

  • +2

South Australia, within the top five states of Australia! Woohoo, we did it.

  • +2

A more interesting question would be what state would you move too if you had to move states. Stops people just cheering for their own state. For example, I suspect not too many people who live outside of Vic would want to move there so would change the vote quite a bit.

  • -2

Adelaide is by far one of the most exhilarating cities in the world. :)

    …….

Sydney is by far the most interesting place. Melbourne comes in at a close second.

  • +1

QLD maybe - good weather, quite a few decent sized cities, the Great barrier reef/beaches and rainforests.

It depends on your financial position as well. If you are a first home buyer then WA/SA and QLD house prices seem appealing. I live in Geelong (Vic) and look at the median house price here which is the same as Brisbane but Brisbane actually offers a lot more in many ways, including job diversity/things to do/good weather.

  • -3

Originally from NSW, but now living in North Queensland and overall I would have to rate Queensland as best.

What I find sad is that people rate Victoria so far as the best state. The actions of the Victorian Government and Police under the guise of COVID-19 have yet again proven that Victoria is a dump of a state that doesn't represent what Australia should be!

  • +1

If Australia needed an enema - Sydney is where you'd insert it.

    • I've found a better place. Bend over and I'll show you…

  • -2

    No best state

But Victoria is definitely the worst, rampant Covid, rampant crime and murder, Apex…. The list goes on.

    Super bad hole

  • -1

    Dictator Dan

    No government accountability

    Super hole

  • +2

My vote goes to Queensland. It's tough to argue with that coastline.

  • +1

    Tassie the prettiest :)
