For 2k surely you can do better than a 1650 TI.

    • For 2K you hope for 2070

      • Yeah, I'd be all over this thing if it were $200 or so less. But you don't get much choice when it comes to portable gaming laptops with good battery life.

      • +3

Unless your buying the Dell g7 on special in the current market or you can pickup a once off deal of another product not going to happen.

Most 1660tis and 2060 models are pushing 2k plus at the moment.

        • +4

          yes, I got the Dell G7 144Hz 17" i7-9750H 16G 2070 for $1720.
Its not portable, but it is nice to use and good value.

          • @congo: Unfortunately Dell G7 will only be able get a fraction of the battery life compared to the 11hrs, the G14 can achieve with lighter workloads

            • +1

              @shellshocked: I use Dell G7 as a desktop replacement.
I will need one for travel, which is why I am considering G14, but waiting for an eBay/Black Friday sale

      • +1

1660ti is all this needs, the 2060 is approx 5-7% faster and the 2070 doesn't grant any more performance over the 2060 on 4800H laptops.

        • +2

Where are you getting that info? A 2070 should definitely get 10-15% more frames than a 2060 in most games, even with the same CPU

          • +1

@RC13: At 80w power limit? Not even close, in some reviews there were performance regressions where the 1660ti was the fastest of the 3 in a couple of titles (not many). Check Jarrod's tech, bob of all trades and hardware unboxed videos.

The numbers you're talking about are in the full fat units 130w or thereabouts.

From NZ for about $500 more. Beats the 1660 ti version with a qhd 60hz panel in my opinion.

    • +7

Yes, but you’ll have to get a 15” or larger laptop.
If you want ultrabook sized gaming laptops, you’ve got to be prepared to pay the premium

    • +7

No. You're paying for the form factor here.

    • +3

This is a small form factor laptop. It's the same size as most 13 inch laptops, it's also got incredible battery life. Also the CPU in this laptop has been in short supply so the prices which should have dropped by now haven't.

This laptop has a very very powerful CPU for things other than gaming so for me, this is the laptop I'm going to be getting rather than the Razer. I value CPU power and battery life, even though the GPU is going to be weaker. The only game I really play is CSGO so this laptop will do excellent for that, when I choose to game.

    • +4

Not at all, this cost is purely due to the 'Ultrabook' form-factor here. This laptop is perfect for people who want lighter laptops, however, don't want a significant compromise on performance. This price is quite amazing, considering the price of competitors in this league such as the Razer Blade Stealth at $3.5K+

      • +2

You will be significantly compromising though unless your only using it in a very heavily air conditioned room (and even then).

    • this one has a 2060 model as well but that comes around 3K
      :O :O

  • -4

Why would the OP think this is a deal?

    • Probably just a response/alternative to the Razer 13 deal.

    • +5

Find another laptop with these specs that's 1.6 kgs and still has decent cooling / performance and we'll talk.

      • -3

Tell me about it. The g14 can't compare in size, weight and finish. The Razer is so much more beautiful than the g14. Not saying the g14 sucks, but if I were in the market for a premium ultra light with decent gaming performance, the Razer is at the top of the list.

        • +4

They're nice but very expensive. The cheaper models have a far weaker CPU than this.

        • +2

The Razer stealth 13, in relation to the deal posted previously, has issues with the 4k screen and slow CPU. Notebookcheck said that the 4k screen has brightness issues, slow response time and ghosting. The CPU also is throttled and under performs by being limited to 15w TDP. I would prefer and laptop, like the G14, where the CPU delivers and the screen is reasonable, looks only go so far.

          https://www.notebookcheck.net/Razer-Blade-Stealth-GTX-1650-M…

  • The razer blade has a 4k touch screen and lighter at 13.6kg.

    • +12

AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS has 8 cores versus Intel 4.
4K is an overkill at 13.3". You won't notice the difference.

I'd go for this due to the better CPU for longevity.
      Plus this has 120Hz screen.

      I am done with 60Hz screen :-)

    • +15

      I hope it’s not 13.6 kg! 😂

    • +1

      heavier than my PC

    • +2

The Razer Blade CPU is a lot slower than the Ryzen 7 4800HS.

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/i7-1065G7-vs-R7-4800HS-vs-R7-4…

      Average Benchmarks Intel Core i7-1065G7 → 100% n=46
      Average Benchmarks AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS → 145% n=46
      Average Benchmarks AMD Ryzen 7 4800H → 151% n=

    • +2

As mentioned in my previous post the Razer Stealth's 4k screen has issues with brightness, response time and ghosting. The Intel CPU is slow because it is limited to 15w TDP instead of 25W, so the CPU will be even slower than the benchmarks I posted above.

Razer build quality also doesn't seem very good based on the second last Whirlpool post

Note this laptop doesn't have a webcam.

    • +1

That is a really stingy thing to leave out yeah

    • It's a real shame, as the G14 is really close to being the perfect somewhat light and reasonably priced workhorse of a laptop, but without a webcam it is just too compromised. Having spent time living overseas with a laptop as my only machine, I quickly realised how necessary a webcam on a laptop is (even if it is the weird bottom corner webcam on my dell).

      • You can use your phone as a webcam for PC

        • But that means I can't use my phone or have my phone doing anything whilst the webcam is being used, which whilst overseas was often an issue as I'd often be awaiting work texts whilst on video conversations. It is also just extra setup. I just want something I can whip out wherever I am travelling, and use the webcam. But I do understand that a phone will work for most people. For me, if I was spending $2k on a laptop, i'd want it to be mostly no compromise. Yes laptop webcams are way crappier than phone cams (or the RX100 into a HDMI capture card i run as a webcam here at home), but the convenience outweighs the crappy camera.

          • @witheredcouch: Can you tell me a little more about your capture card setup? I have a RX100 Mk 3 sitting around and have been thinking of doing this, would be awesome to get your pointers

            • @bono: It's just one of those cheapie HDMI capture cards (like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDMI-Video-Capture-Card-USB-2-0-… ), with a microhdmi cable from the camera to the card, and then cropped in using OBS and Virtualcam. It isn't flawless, but for using what is sitting around, it is cheap, and a lot better than any webcam I have used. I am using an RX100 MKII so I imagine the III would do the job just as well if not better. Only negative is having to use manual focus due to (at least I can't work it out) the AF boxes being present if AF is on.

    • +2

Having moved my company online I got an external webcam just to see if it made much of a difference. Went out and dropped $250 on a Logitech high end one. Laptop webcams are dead to me now. The quality of this camera is so far ahead of anything on any laptop. So for me, this not having a webcam is just fine. I have a tablet with a built-in one if I need and a phone. Both of which can be placed better than a laptop webcam too.

Anyways that's my thoughts on the webcam.

      • I can see that, I use a camera into a HDMI capture card as my webcam due to the quality. However the convenience of a webcam in a laptop, no matter how crappy, is makes it for me. If I am travelling, I wouldn't want to have to carry around a webcam as well. If I was fixed in one location, sure. In an ideal world you have both, the crappy webcam on the laptop to get the job done, and a decent external.

  • Could this laptop output at 4k to an external monitor?

    • Sure

    • It could handle multiple monitors with ease. The ports are

      2x USB-A 3.2, 1x USB-C gen 2 with DP1.4 and charging (left), 1x USB-C gen 2 data-only (right), HDMI 2.0b, headphone/mic, Kensington Lock

You could connect a monitor via DP1.4

      and or

      HDMI 2.0b

      • Awesome thanks. Such a shame about the Webcam. That's a port gone just for Webcam.

        • Depending on your monitor you could plug it in to the USB on the back, and daisy chain it back to the laptop to save a cord.

    • A raspberry pi can output 4k to an external monitor…what are you doing with the 4k is the question.

  • I think Im going to wait until black friday/cyber monday and hope that I can get it for at least an extra $200 off.

EDIT: Does anyone know if the smaller tech stores (mwave, wireless1, umart etc.) tend to to have black friday sales? I had already decided to buy this laptop like half a year ago but am not sure whether I should bite on this deal now. If there are no equivalent deals for this laptop during black friday/boxing day, I will end up having to buy it at RRP since I'll need a new laptop before uni starts next year.

  • "IPS-level", so not IPS

    • +7

IPS is an LG trademark. IPS-Level means is made by another manufacturer with similar in-plane switching technology. For example Samsung calls it PLS for similar screen technology. The panel on this laptop is either:

AU Optronics B140QAN02.3, for the QHD 60Hz panel

      or

CEC LM140LF-1F01 panel, for the FHD 120Hz panel

      • +2

        Thanks had no idea

  • this laptop has some really good reviews…

  • Does this model have the AniMe Matrix LED?

    • Probably not.

    • Going to guess no, seems to be a rare option on high spec US units only

  • LENOVO LEGION RYZEN laptops are better value

    • +4

Yes but the Legion ones are much bigger and bulkier.

This is ultrabook size and gaming laptop performance mixed together, it's somewhat of a unicorn really. It doesn't have a competitor really.

    • link please

      • +1

I think they are referring to my Legion 5 post. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/578303#comment-9565111

The Legion 5 15" is great gaming laptop, built well for the 4800H and has really good cooling. The 4800H and the 1660ti/2060(not available in AU yet) in this chassis are the some of the best performing due to cooling capability. If you compare it to the g14 it is bigger. Hence, if you really need a small portable laptop it may be an issue. The other issue is that the Au version of the Legion 5 doesn't come with the 80wh battery like some other regions, so battery life is max 5 to 6hrs. This battery life would be considerably good for gaming laptops, but not all day use.

  • +1

I know it's about 0.5%, but it says on the page it comes with free shipping however going through the cart, it doesn't say free.

    There's also a 1% surcharge which is $19.99.

  • -7

    No worth it.
It’s original price is $2199 down to $1999
    It has old gpu 1660ti
Whereas the rtx 3000 series are the same price.

    Not worth it at all.

Rather wait for rtx 3000 series graphics in these laptops

    • +3

Whereas the rtx 3000 series are the same price.

      Entire laptop = $1999

      RTX 3080 = $1800

I suppose you're close enough, but not in a good way

    • Idiotic comment tbh.

3000 series laptop GPUs haven't even been announced, you could be waiting 6 months or more for real products.

  • If size doesnt matter as much, Asus TUF Gaming laptops are better value.

You get same CPU, 144hz IPS panel and RTX2060 for the same money.

    • +1

The TUF has a 4800H CPU or 4900H CPU. The TDP is 45W. The 4800HS CPU is better binned for power efficiency and runs at 35w. You will also need to double check the screen because the majority of regions only get a 45 % NTSC panel in the TUF. The G14 has 72% NTSC panel. The image quality on the TUF will be inferior.

      • If its for just gaming, colour accuracy won't be as important.

TUF gaming is much more chunky, so up to what the buyer wants I guess.

  • Same price as treasurePc online in eBay , soo it’s not cheaper …

    • +1

Aren’t all of treasurePCs laptops refurbs?

      • Oops you are right !! Got it in my watch list but never look deep into it ..

  • +2

I have the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 9 16gb mem 1tb SSD Nvdia RTX 2060. I've previously used the Gigabyte Aero 15, Sager and Alienware laptops but I have to say the G14 is alot better hands down. I would highly recommend it!

    • Compare to Legion 5?
