  • It be great if there was a device that lets us easily shuck hard drives out of external drives :-)

Gift cards and a flat-head screwdriver.

        And dont forget Youtube

  • What is the difference between the ORICO-6629 and the ORICO-6628 (apart from the rounded edges)? I ask because Umart has the 6628 for $42

    • The 6628 is only for SATA 1 and 2, The 6629 does 1, 2 and 3.

EDIT: Orico website says that the 6628 does support SATA 3. Information by customers on Amazon.com was incorrect. Who'd have thought?

EDIT 2: Apart from the 6629 being smaller, it seems that the power supply is 12V3A, whereas the 6628 is 12V4A.

      • So the 6628may be the better option (more power to the drives and cheaper)?

        • The saving on purchase price might be offset by higher power consumption, especially if on 24/7.

  • A lot of these dual disk caddies have a button that lets you easily clone a drive. That has me fearful I could accidently bump the button and suddenly end up erasing my second drive that I wanted to read from.

Also many of these won't let you insert a drive into the other slot while another is active.

I've got same thing in a different brand and you have to do the button hold for 3 seconds, then release and then press again to confirm. Had it on my desk for years and never once come close to accidentally cloning. I doubt you would ever do it.

I have this model, there is actually a switch at the back which changes it from "pc" to "clone". So you need to flick the switch first to clone, then hit the button to start the cloning functionality. So there is a bit of safety in the 2 stage process

PC mode is to connect to your PC and run the drives as external hard drives

EDIT: I have the Dual USB 3.0 device. Just to be clear

    • This seems like something a spy would use, to copy a drive before the guard makes his next scheduled sweep. The guard will fumble with his keys or something though, buying you just enough time to put everything back how it was and hide.

  • Also many of these won't let you insert a drive into the other slot while another is active.

How do you suppose the second drive will work when there is only one usb cable that goes to your computer?

    • I'm assuming it acts like a USB hub, but I know from experience (as I have the Dual USB 3.0 device) that it shows as 2 separate external drives on your computer when you have 2 drives attached and you can copy to and from them both at the same time

Obviously you are limited to the max speed of the one USB 3.0 cable, however I found that speed is fine for 2x 3.5" HDD to function close to maximum speeds.

      • It is very likely the devices that infy have tried putting 2 drives in are not a hub and only meant for cloning hard drives which you don't need a hub functionality to do the cloning.

  • Can you clone a 4TB disk to an 8TB disk? Or do the sizes have to match?

    • on the older orico USB 2.0 version i have the size does not need to match. (but obviously you need enough space).

    • Yes.

        Yes to which question?

  • What kind of hard drives do these take? I have three portable hard drives, Seagate, WD and Imation. How will they fit into these slots without Thier respective cables. Is there an alternative enclosure which can combine my three drives for access via a single interface to my router or directly to my computer?

this could be more of what you are after.

If the portable drives have a usb cable then a heymix usb hub might be what you are after.

    • It suits for 2.5inch/3.5inch SATA hard drive. You don't need extra cable.
Yes, there is ORICO multi-bay enclosure can combine three drives. Please visit our Amazon store.

  • Thanks for the post - I just bought the $44.99 one - bargain!

  • I decided to order 2 after looking at the photos and seeing it should have a slide switch to enable or disable the clone function.
