Might wanna chuck free shipping in the title before some people bitch about it before clicking the link and finding out for themselves.
Nice find, 4x are usually pretty expensive.

    • +1

      Done :) Thanks!

  • i always wondered, does it matter if you use generic usb chargers for phones/cameras etc. I'm always worried it can ruin the battery? same with generic usb cables for charging, are they ok?
otherwise, good deal, i might grab one if someone can put me at ease.

    • +1

Won't matter much. Just match 3v and 5v devices to respective charger output and you'll be golden.

      • +1

What devices uses 3V? This is the first time I've heard of it :(

        • Small keyboard lights, laptop cooling fan stand thingies. Gadgets like that generally.

      • +2

AFAIK USB specifications only allows for 5V power supply. Anything substantially above or below that would be outside of USB spec. Personally I've never seen a 3V USB device.

      • +1

        USB spec doesn't use 3V anywhere. It's a serial bus, you've either got 5v or 0v.

Generally damage from generic devices occurs when they don't adhere to USB spec and can be too high or low voltage. That said, your average USB chipsets in devices are designed to withstand voltage spikes up to 20v so there isn't too much to worry about there unless it ends up putting through AC.

The MAIN problem with most generic devices, is that they use cheaper components and cannot supply a large amount of current. So your devices will charge too slowly (or not at all as drain on battery will be more than it can charge).

        • this one claims to be 2A, so it should be fine for a few devices… i wouldn't go plugging in 4 iPads though…

I know when I look at bags that I will only ever consider digital bags. The analogue bags just don't cut it in this high-tech world.

    • I'm old fashioned and prefer the analogue ones…

    • those little yellow padded bags that everything arrives in are great for storing hdds in :) i've got tonnes of them now.

    • I like the comment 'none of my 2.5" hdds comfortably fit inside this bag' yet it's one of the selling points.

Before everyone get too excited about this.

    • A good alternative if you don't need the extra plugs :)

      • can always use a figure 8 cable

        • you've got figure 8 cables with plug heads from other countries? :O

        • @kirynflare
          I do.
An MP3 dock from the UK, laptop charger from USA plus something else I forget and something else from EU.

        • Wait, isn't a laptop charger cable a 3 pin? :S

          I'm so clueless T__T

        • A really old samsung laptop. It didn't have ground for whatever reason.
It was the cord form the wall to the power pack.

        • I wish someone makes a figure-8 cable/adapter like this:

3 separate figure-8 on one end
Universal changable country plugs on the other

That way I can plug my laptop charger, camera charger and USB charger all at once to a single plug on the wall anywhere in the world. Doesn't get anymore convenient than that.

I don't want to lug my Australian power board around anymore. Just too big

        • Well until then, an adapter and a powerboard wouldn't work?

        • 3 separate figure-8 on one end
Universal changable country plugs on the other

but you'd have mains voltages on pins on the unused plugs?

    • buyincoins don't have as large a range but they always seem to undercut dealextreme's prices. new customers can also use a 10% off coupon.

      • I've noticed that keenly of late when searching out a few identical items. Rule of thumb(non-facebook), seems to be to find it on DE and then check for it on BINC. Specials aside, Meritline seems to fall in-between on alot of stuff.

Is that 10% coupon easy to find on first checkout mattgal?

        • +1

"10%Ebay2011" (without quotes) is a bic coupon and gives new customers you 10% off sitewide at buyincoins.com (i don't know how they determine a new account - maybe delivery address or paypal account). i used it back in october and it worked.

you can also get an additional 5% off if you use someone's recommender code (google buyincoins + coupon)

so up to 15% off sitewide

  • Another Meritline sale on

Do you realise that they send them out (by email) every DAY?

    • i only get one email on monday?

    • I do realise. Which is why I said another sale :)

Although sometimes I get it for a few days in a row, and sometimes none at all.

  • +1

I bought this from DX to charge my iPad and iPhone overseas, it does deliver close to what it says, managed to charge my iPad and 2 iPhone 4,s at full speed, you can also use a figure 8 cable with it. The button on the side is to release the ac plug.

  • Do you think you're getting substantially more than the usual USB 500ma current limit per individual socket? That's what I'm looking for.

    • +2

The ports are as follows 1x2A, 1x1A, 1x500mAh, 1x300mAh. Works fine with my ipad in the 2A port.

  • what are people's experience of the shipping duration? 5 days; 10 days? cheers

    • At least 10 days at tis time of year.

    • "Ships from China warehouse. Most customers receive in 2-3 weeks."

    • 2-3 weeks for all my stuff.

  • I love these things, but try them out at home before travelling with them. Some devices are iffy about power.

I have a different one and while it has no issue with iPods and iPhones, the crusty old Sony Ericsson mobile I used to have refused to charge on it. It's not an issue with the device so much as it is with the phone and that phone only wanted its proprietary charger. Nice going Sony.

  • Anyone got one and tried it with a PS3 controller?

Those mofos don't want to charge off anything other than a PS3 no matter what I try. My logitech 240V usb charger doesnt work. My mobile usb-out battery charger is no go either. I'm wondering if the PS3 has a resistor across a couple USB pins (common trick to stop things charging without the right charger) or something like that…

  • My only very minor complaint is the 2 blue LEDS between USB ports are quite bright at night.

  • ok just checked my cameras usb charger and the plug says output: 4.2V 400 ma
my phone charger says 5V 1A

    two questions:
    1) can i use my phone charger (the 5v 1A to charge my camera? noting that it is higher than my current camera charger)
    2) will this 4 port thing work ok with my camera and phone - do i have to match the right ampage plug with device or is mA just a measure of how fast it will charge it?

    • +2

The current rating on a charger is the current it can supply, and on a device the current it will draw. So as long as the sum of all the draws is less than what the charger can supply, the charger will be fine.

The voltage rating must match up. If you connect a lower voltage device to a higher voltage supply, you risk damage. For the converse, it may not charge at all.

I'm surprised you say your camera has a USB charger that supplies 4.2V. USB ports supply 5V by definition. When you say "USB charger" do you actually mean wall wart aka power pack? It's not a USB charger unless it has a USB port.

So no, you should not attempt to connect your 4.2V camera to a 5V USB charger. Unless it's specifically stated that your camera can tolerate being connected to a real USB port supplying 5V, i.e. the 4.2V is the minimum acceptable, and it can accommodate higher voltage inputs.

      • hi GP thanks for your reply.
the camera charger basically is the same as my htc phone charger (i.e it splits into two parts the plug/head that goes into the wall which then has a usb slot in it and the 2nd part which is the usb cable). The same cable is used to plug the camera into the laptop and it also seems to charge it but I've done it this way.
I was hoping rather than taking two socket plugs around with me I could take one or rather just purchase this deal. But it seems like this weird voltage camera won't let me :S

        • If you can charge the camera from a computer USB port with a cable that has a USB plug on it, then it will tolerate 5V. The 4.2V is probably the minimum required to work. So it should work, but don't hold me to that.

  • dang I didn't see that was in USD until after I paid with wrong creditcard.
Bank fees just bumped up the price a bit for me :(
