      I am after a long term plan…

      • +4

Buy an Aldi starter pack then for $5. The call & sms rates are half the price of this "Optus Long Expiry plan" and it comes with $5 credit.
Sim will remain active for 12 months before needing a recharge.

        • my Aldi sim expiring soon, time to switch. Is this the best option for long term number keeping?

          • +2

@OrangeBJ: You can recharge for $15 which will give you another 12 months. Not sure if that's the cheapest option if all you're wanting to do is keep your number active, but it must be pretty close.

Edit - You could port to the Amaysim $2.70 deal I linked to above. I think Amaysim sims stay active for 12 months even if you don't recharge (maybe someone can confirm?) Then port back to a new Aldi $5 starter pack which would be cheaper but a bit more mucking around.

            • +3

@Arthur Dunger: Yes, the Amaysim SIMs remain active for 12 months after the credit runs out.

I receive calls & txt on my long term number on an Amaysim SIM for over a year without any credit. It's in a dual SIM phone, with Kogan or whatever is cheapest for outgoing calls & data.

          • +4

@OrangeBJ: From Arthur's Amaysim deal you could get the 8GB one for $2 (costs $7 with $5 cashback). A saving of 70 cents (but much less data). :)

And I can confirm these Amaysim SIMs with $0 credit last 12 months before the number gets cancelled. They even send you email and SMS to warn you around the 12 months mark. But keep in mind Optus have just bought Amaysim, so things could change.

    • Does Amysim offer VoLTE/VoWiFi?

    • +1

Nice find Arthur Dunger. Just pitty I bought 2 Sim from Coles store yesterday. One is Vodafone $30 marked down to $9. The other ones is AmaySim $30 also marked down to $9

  • Maybe it is time for Optus to increase data in line with Amaysim.

Optus are about to buy amaysim. So unlikely

As per my post last time, this can be used for spotify

I can confirm that this can be used for 2x months of spotify premium at $11.99 per month (taken from the $30 credit).

Activate it on the long life plan, this gives $30 credit valid for 186 days.

On Spotify (using the account section of Spotify) sign up for the $11.99 standard plan (none of the others work). When you get to the section to enter your card details (or if you've already got them in there) click the update section and you should have a drop down box with different payment options - one of which is "Pay by Optus" (or something like that).

It'll ask for your Optus mobile number and then send you a 4 digit pin to confirm. After that, it's all done and it'll use the balance for the next two months after which you'll have a pointless balance of $6.02 remaining enough for 24 minutes of calls or 86mb of data.

Plus you can activate Optus Sport monthly for 5$ extra.

Can it be used on Netflix subscription?

    • Can it be used on Google play store?

      • Nope. Optus Google play billing is only available for postpaid customers.

        • Ok. Thanks. 👍

    • Do you know if it works with Spotify deals? like the $11.99 for 3-month premium deal?

      • +1

Nope. You can only use Optus billing with the full price standard option. None of the other deals like the family, student plans, or other discounts apply.

I'm away for a week and don't have much data on my SIM …at a hotel on the Central coast that doesn't have free wifi (the cost is ridiculous) so can I buy this $5 SIM (total) at a supermarketand and activate immediately to get 50 gig for my phone and laptop? was going to get the Amaysim deals that have big discounts for lots of data at the moment for $10 or $15…..50 to 80GB

    • +4

With this deal they will send you a starter pack, so prolly not good for your needs.
What you want is the kogan deal….
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/543472
…this deal will send you a voucher in your email that you use when setting up the sim.
The sim can be bought separately at these locations (usually $2 I think)….
      https://www.koganmobile.com.au/where-to-buy-kogan-mobile-sim…
….so you can buy the sim locally, use the code from the email to set it up instantly and youll have a kogan sim waiting for you at home.

  • Thanks Paez …but I'm away , not at home for a SIM delivery. I was wanting to buy the SIM from a newso or supermarket and activate straight away….

    • +4

Thats why I gave you a link to the page where you can buy them locally ;P
You dont have to use the code you get in the email with the sim they send you, you can use any kogan sim. I know coz I have like 10 here (they where free once and I got a bunch) and can use any of them with a code.

      • Cheers.buddy 👍

    • +1

First, grab a kogan sim at united servo
Second, go to logan website buy the plan, code will be sent to your email.
Third, following the instructions, activating, key in code..
      Done.

  • Does this have access to 5G also or is that exclusive to Post-Paid?

  • when does the sim card expire? i want to port out to this at the end of next month. is that enough?

    • +2

The one that I bought a couple of months ago on a similar deal has an expiry of 1/12/21. You'll be fine.

    • The one that I bought recently had an expiry of 1 Nov 2021 but on the back says "activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion".

Not sure how strict they are with the 30 days.

  • It expires when you throw it away - there are 4 different plans with different conditions. Read them to find out as they all serve different purposes…

  • thanks OP.

  • Any expiry date? Can I buy now and only activate in 6 months time?

    • The below is listed on Optus website. So looks like you have to activate within 28 days. Not sure how strict they are. I brought one with the intention of using it in Feb, lets see if I can still activate then.

Limited to 1 per customer. Offer ends 12/11/20. First three recharges must occur within 90 days of activation. Data: after 3rd recharge, $30 gives you 10GB standard data. For use in AU within 28 days. Excludes rate plan and SIM swaps.

      • +3

The SIM will expire in or beyond Nov 2021.

        • I was just on live chat with them. They said 30 days to activate.

          • +3

@duckieboy: Thats their way to prompt people to use the service sooner.

I have 5-6 from the $5 sale in the last 3 months and very sure about what I said. Not going to buy this time.

            • @Neoika: As this is a special deal I wasn't sure if the same rule apply. I'll leave it till Feb and see.

              Thanks!

              • +2

@duckieboy: It is not that "special". In the event that Optus upgrades data for $30 prepaid plan in future(like Amaysim just did it), your not-activated SIM cards also get the benefit.

    • +2

I bought one 6 months ago and Activated just yesterday!

      Works perfectly.

Ignore the Indians on Live Chat. They have the wrong information.

The Expiry is what’s printed on the back of the Starter Pack, which is November 2021.

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed one

  • When you buy this (or anyone else) from the Optus website, you immediately get emailed a $20 Voucher to take $20 off anything off $30 or more.

    How does one use this?

There is nowhere to put the Discount Code in?

    • "I have a promo code" under Review your order.

Too much of my time wasted to cancel

  • +2

One crazy good advantage of this over the 28/30 day plans is that if you choose long expiry for example, you have a bank of credit. This can be used for Facebook purchases. Even though there is a transaction fee, it still makes this the cheaper way to go.

These are very rough numbers for illustration purposes and I realise the math isn't perfect. For example, I purchased something for ~$1.39 and the transaction fee was ~$2.11. Using direct debit, I would be able to make this purchase 3 times with some change left over from my original $5 ($1.39 x 4= $4.17 and $.83 leftover). However with Optus Credit, I would be able to make that same purchase 8 times ($3.5 x 8 =$28 and $2 leftover).

    • what else can you buy with the credit and what did you buy on fb ?

  • +4

can confirm you can buy as much as you like and expiry is as printed on starter pack, I had a few from last deal and just activated one not long ago after … 8 months since purchase lol

  • anyone know how long optus lets you keep the number after the credit runs out?

  • Has anyone tried porting to Optus? What was the procedure like? Did they need you to have an active number to send a confirmation sms? Or can it be done another way like sending the confirmation code via the website?
