    lmk

A new acronym to add to the ob list.

    • +1

Lmk = "let me know" if anyone is wondering

I couldn't find the FAQ page which had all OzB References. But this thing was the first to pop up from Google:
        https://blog.ozbargain.com.au/2016/ozbargain-memes/

PS: I think JB Hifi dropped the ball on this deal. It should have been priced at $33.10 ; )

3g is being phased out I believe.

    • June 2024

      • +14

It’s being phased out now. 2024 is when it’s finished. Some areas now you can’t make or receive calls unless you have VoLTE 4g phone

I found around 6 towns in Qld (travelled around for a month) that don’t have 3G anymore.
You get a text from Telstra saying…
        The text is…
Hi, you are in a 4G only area.
Your device does not have 4G voice calling capability enabled. This means you may not be able to make voice/emergency calls in this area. Visit telstra.com/callhelp to check if you can enable 4G voice calling on your device. If you cannot enable 4G calling on your device, or you choose not to enable it, this limitation will apply to this device each time you enter this area. However, please note you will not receive a reminder every time.

    • When is this happening?

    • +1

It is, I work in the telco industry and a lot of sites don't have 3G anymore.

Just not enough space to keep all technologies on the structure and cost saving as well.

      • +1

If you get rid of 3G, you get to get rid of 1x cabinet space for the RBS 3x.

You probably also get to get rid of an altek rack.

That's a fair bit of hut space back.

        • Its Eltek not Altek lol.

It depends on the carrier but Optus and VF share cabins currently on some sites (going through a divorce now as VF and TPG are doing a partnership).

But some sites are located in really hot areas and will need bigger air con units not to mention the more remote sites will need more battery back up as well.

it depends on the situation and needs so every bit of space counts.

    • Yaiks! That means you can't use this as a backup phone. It would be ironic if a backup phone can't even make a phone call at the time you actually need it.

      • The majority of reviews are quiet positive though….

    • Sheeet, I've got a drawer full of back up phones (all bought from OB deals)
Better get them down to the recycling bin…..

the lack of 4G isn't the actual deal-killer, it's the myriad of software bugs that this phone has which is unpatched because… well, it doesn't have an OTA update feature.

The current crop of Nokia feature phones now run KaiOS (based on Firefox) which is a lot better than AliOS (formerly Yun OS, which was engineered by AliBaba group)

    A review from OP’s link:

    Known voice call issues
Incoming voice call quality starts off well and then as the call progresses, becomes abysmal to the point of being unable to use. Outgoing voice quality is unaffected. Returned to store for a new, replacement handset. Same problem on the replacement unit, regardless of geographic location or time of day.

Only way to fix was to turn Mobile Data off.

Contacted NOKIA, who stated that yes, they were aware of this issue only in Australia.

They had no fix and no time frame for a solution.

Apart from all of that, and the slightly convoluted way to turn predictive texting off, it would be a decent, practical phone. We are contemplating returning the second handset, if we can find a good feature phone replacement.

    • Other than that 1 review; the others are quite positive

    This or the S20 Ultra?

think this one has better specs

    • This can double as a weapon for self defense

  • +1 over Iphone

Any tempered glass and cover for this?

    • The branding is the cover

Honestly as someone who bought it as one of those $30ish deals (so cheaper than this), even I think it was a waste of money. There was a novelty to carrying it and using it for a week or so but the reality is it has amazingly good battery life because there's not a whole lot to do with this phone.

If all you do is take calls/make calls and sms (ie no internet/data needs) then I can see this being a great dumb phone for those specific use cases (eg a phone for a security/concierge desk in an apartment complex)… but other than that, I don't see great value even at $30 let alone $40+.

i bought one for $19 from Coles around xmas last year and have yet to unbox it. i honestly just bought it because omg cheap nokia. i would otherwise have used it to receive spam/sms/2fa codes but my iphone 3gs still gets 4-5 days between charges.

      • +1

Awesomeness, in the same boat mate. Yet to unbox the Nokia & 3GS still going strong (though use it as my alarm), lol.

        • i've also adopted a mutant iphone 4 since. it had a broken screen, so i took the screen from an icloud-locked 4s, lopped off the bezel and now have an almost-mint 4. just need to change the battery and i'll have another phone set up for free trials and stuff ;)

      Beware the lack of Wi-Fi.

    • Dual sim is pretty cool. If had no signal on one operator, could use the other. I've had data drop outs with Telstra in a busy city before

    • Wish they realised a full qwerty keyboard varient as I would jump on it

      • +3

I know they're robust, but be careful jumping on it. You might twist your ankle.

        • Oof. Didn't see that one.

Fond memories of Snake II and composing your own cringey ringtone

    • -1

Snake on this phone isn’t the same as Snake II

Perfect for children, no reason to give them a $1000 iPhone!!

  • No deal unless I can use it for self defense like the OG Nokia phones back in the days.

    • The OG Nokia 3310 can be classed as a deadly weapon.

  • I did an OzB no no. I bought it, but I didn't check the previous deals on this item and now feel like I've let myself down :(

Wasn't in a rush to buy it; needed a cheap phone for next year for my son for after school in case I'm running late to pick him up

No wireless charging - deal breaker.

    • Yeah, A decent wireless charger with built in fan costs almost same price of this phone, so I agree that its a deal breaker :p

This phone is the #1 selling vibrator in India. Look it up…

  • ahhh the days when a phone was good as a phone not as your entire life and a phone last.

  • How old is this phone? Battery dead?

  • This has dual functions - one as a phone and another as a defence mechanism.

  • Price is $89 on website
