What do people think? Any good? Similar options for the weight, dedicated CPU and QHD display plus screen size? I was looking at Lenovo's AMDs but chunkier and HPs ProBook and Envy x360 didn't seem to be as good overall.

10% CR won't work though since it's not one of their codes?

Sorry to say but I've had atrocious quality control from Dell. Two dead inspiron 7306 units. Not sure if I'm going to risk the third or just refund.

The new drivers for the Xe graphics I think needs a bit more time to mature too. You can tell the whole unit, at least mine, has brilliant promise, but it feels very beta. This will be somewhat mitigated by the dgpu here.

Double check if your laptop can charge reliably over USB C. This second one really struggles.

    • Thanks for the comments and thankfully this had the NVIDIA MX-350, not the Intel GPU 🙂

  • Have you received your laptop yet? Thinking of getting one as well. Wonder how the build quality is like, compared to xps.

    • No, it was shipped on 12 November but ETA is 17-25th and nothing yet… You can get it on Dell's eBay sale now for around $1600 again!

      • Yeah I saw that. Seems like great specs for that price! I've read the build quality isn't as good as others (such as xps range), so wondering if it's something I can live with for that price. There doesn't seem to be any brick & mortar shops that carry it for me to physically check it out.

Yep, I felt the same way! Supposedly the quality is closer to the XPS line than ever before but of course they need to differentiate. If you like at the specs and price however, for me it's an easy choice. I've had an XPS 15 before and QC wasn't that good. Ended up getting a HP Spectre x360 at the time instead.

I've only found 2 reviews so far but only one with these specs and no visuals apart from photos.

          Here's one and here's the other…

I wish they used the bigger battery as I'm hoping for 10+ hour battery life so will be interesting to see how it fares.

          • @mrkrazy: Thanks!
What's Dell's return policy like if you decide you don't like what you've ordered?

            • @mandelbrot: 15 days 👍🏾 HP is 30 days but you should have a pretty good idea what you think about in by two weeks depending on your use case.

              • @mrkrazy: Any idea about Lenovo?

                • @Modesty: I was looking at Lenovo's too and was hoping for an AMD in terms of performance but sadly most models have either bad screens/resolution, 8GB RAM and much heavier, no Thunderbolt 4, etc.

                  • @mrkrazy: I ordered Lenovo IdeaPad S540 with Ryzen 7 4800U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD $1,142.10 few days ago. I hope it serves me well.
I think Lenovo don't return because of change of mind and issue full refund?

                    • @Modesty: Yeah, I looked at that too but it's 13.3" whereas the Inspiron 7400 is closer to 14.5" plus has Thunderbolt 4 and 1TB SSD. Not sure about change of mind returns with Lenovo though? Plus I'm also trying to steer away from Chinese owned brands even though the Dell and most other laptops are produced there 😕

                      • @mrkrazy: Yeah. But there's price difference as well. But lenovo one bas best processor. If you need thunderbolt, then you'll have to stick with intel I believe. It's very hard to find laptop with good specs and good screen, specially with lenovo, lenovo has good priced laptops with good specs , but terrible screens. The S540 has fgod screen though.

                        • @Modesty: Yeah, but I've already got a 13.3" and I didn't want a 15.6" so this was a great compromise as there are a lot more competitors in the 13 inch market.

But as always it's quite subjective and I am no doubt jealous of your AMD processor and more reasonable price!

                    • @Modesty: Do you have a link to that deal? I can only see those specs for $1799 on the Lenovo website.

                  • @mrkrazy: You can't get Thunderbolt on this generation AMD models (well in theory if they added a third party controller, but in reality you can't).

Absolutely agree on the bad screens.

For light, with a good screen and up to 16Gb RAM a good options is the lenovo s540. However it has a significant limitation in that it's USB Type C is gimped to only 5GB/s instead of up to 20Gb/s which is possible on other AMD laptops, so you can't do for instance a 4K@60hz monitor over that 5Gb Type C let alone share other peripherals like a dock. Also no touch screen.

              • @mrkrazy: Do Dell do full refund for returns within 15 days? That's pretty good if so.

                • +1

@mandelbrot: Yep, I did that with my XPS 15 some time ago and I just checked again before buying this one. As mentioned, HP is even better at 30 days but you should have a good idea within two weeks whether you want to keep it or not.

                  • @mrkrazy: I just checked out of curiosity and Lenovo supposedly has a 7 calendar day refund policy but they seem to charge a 20% restocking fee!

                    • @mrkrazy: Is Dell's return policy different if purchased through eBay? I couldn't find anything about it.

                      • @mandelbrot: No idea, you'd have to check the T&Cs. According to the listing there's a 30 day free return policy which might be eBay's and not Dell's, so if it's not damaged you should be OK? I'd chat to Dell on their website or with eBay to be safe.

                        • +1

@mrkrazy: Asked the question to Dell on eBay and they confirmed it's 30 days return. Pretty good

                          • @mandelbrot: That's great news!

                            • +1

@mrkrazy: Ummed and ahhhed about it, then decided to pull the trigger. Worst come to worst, I can return it within 30 days, or cancel the order if something else better goes on sale in the meantime.

                    • @mrkrazy: Lenovo return policy Not so good

                • @mandelbrot: See my comment about that the USB C on that is gimped.

                  • @bono: On the Lenovo or dell?

                    • @mandelbrot: On the lenovo s540 the USB c is gen 1 only 5Gb.

                      (gen 2 is 10Gb Gen 2x2 is 20Gb).

The dell I'm not sure about as I didn't get that close to a purchase decision, I decided against it due to intel chip being slow, dell consumer line terrible quality control/many problems, and finally I saw this review which put me off it due to the screen not being that good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fz7jkM38PA&app=desktop see where it's side by side with the other screens. I recommend jumping ahead in that review to find what you need..

  • Can anyone help me make up my mind between this Inspiron 14 7000 and this Vostro 15 7000: https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/business-laptops-ultrab…

Im liking the specs of the Inspiron, as I don't game on my laptop. But the Vostro has a slightly larger screen, but the Inspiron's screen appears to be better quality. Both look very good.

    • Pros for the Vostro:
      - Better GFX card
      - Pro support
      - Faster processor
      - Bigger screen
      - TPM

      Pros for the Inspiron:
      - Newer processor
      - QHD and 16:10 screen
      - Lighter
      - 1TB SSD
      - A lot lighter (1.2 kg vs 1.7kg)
      - Thunderbolt 4
