Sony UHD 4K Blu Ray Player with Dolby Vision UBP-X700 - $279 + Delivery (Free with Kogan First) @ Kogan

100

There haven't been many price drops on 4k Blu Ray players in the past year, and prices are up compared to last year. If you want Dolby Vision support, your options are limited and this is basically the cheapest option. I paid $20 more a few weeks ago, but I'm satisfied. Only downside is that network speeds are limited to 100Mbit LAN and 2.4Ghz WiFi.

Credit to Pricehipster, where I had a price alert set up that I forgot about.

    Any good VCR players available?

Other than illegal downloads, how else do you get full mileage out of a high end tv? Streaming is better than it was, but nowhere near comparable.

  • Mm these were in BIG W in April of this year for $99.95

I'd say to try a check of Big W first too, I link back to my comments and pictures I made during April or so back then:

I highly doubt that was around the country. At this point in time, I think this is the best price. COVID-19 has affected home entertainment prices a lot.

      • I'll still have to suggest to (others) to call up or have a browse of Big W anyway, doesn't cost anything except for the time —- especially with a potential $180 saving if the clearance price is still valid

        • You don't seriously believe they'd still sell it at less than 1/3rd of the RRP? It must have been a mistake, and a very local one. They would have been bought up by now and Brodened.

          • @Make it so: The UBP X700 is pretty dated, it's more than 2 years old at this point — UBP X800 never made it here to Australia or the X800M2 refresh which was last year

I confirmed the price across two stores here in Melbourne; Box Hill and Doncaster during that April. These were labelled as clearance items and stock was not advertised online/or available online, and was simply in-store.

I mention this again as a suggestion, it's no skin off my back, I simply suggest again that a quick call to a local Big W to check before purchasing from Kogan could save $180 —- which is in ozbargain spirit.

  • Serious question, why would anyone in their right mind buy this over an Xbox One S?

    • +3

Dolby vision on Disc. Xbox one s / x / series x /s don't support Dolby Vision on Disc.

      • Thanks I wasn't aware of that, I played plenty of stuff with DV I guess none of them were discs

Anyway, it seems it's been a work in progress that never eventuated, pretty disappointing

  • From what I have read, with this player, you need to select Dolby Vision every time you put in a DV disc. The player doesn't do it automatically. Still, a good price.

    • It's a global setting. I don't believe it resets. Though I do not know for sure what the impact is if you insert a non-Dolby-Vision disc.

  • been contemplating one since buyin the 75 inch Sony 9000H through that deal the other day (yet to arrive!), saw that Catch have the LG UBK90 for 317 plus delivery (free with Club Catch, or trial of it?) - and it does have Dolby Vision:

    https://www.catch.com.au/product/lg-ubk90-4k-dolby-vision-bl…

Dunno how it compares otherwise - better? worse? - but might be an option for some, esp those with Catch discounts etc

    • I was eyeing they model before, and in some ways it may be better. But it usually costs more, and the larger size is an issue for me (won't fit my cabinet).

The Sony gets good reviews though.

The dolby vision on LG UBK90 does not work with sony tv’s. Only panasonic and sony uhd players are compatible with sony tv’s. Has something to do with the way LG has implemented dolby vision.

Geez ok cheers thanks for the heads up - dunno how I (or anyone) woulda known that otherwise. How crap is that and how convoluted is all this stuff…

      • +1

Yeah Sony have implemented their own version of Dolby vision whereas lg are using the proper standard. Pity things like this happen, makes it worse for the consumer

  • How does it compare to Panasonic ub820?

    • not on the same page edit much worse

    • From what I’ve read the Panasonic is better because of the auto DV switching.

    • UB820 supports HDR10, HDR10+ (DV rival), HLG and DV. It also has the HCX processor to produce stunning images for HDR10. plus it has HDR optimizer and manual setting options. Ideal for projectors which do not support DV yet.

  • No region free hack for this one. They need to be hardware modded.

    • oh there are softmods/hacks for some? then I could be rid of my Laser blu ray player which would be good. Guess I gotta do mooore research (but after TVs and PC parts I am so over this shit hah)
