Pixel 4a 5G $559 (+ 2 Months Plan Cost from $45/Month) @ Telstra

600

Looks like Telstra have another decent pixel deal with $240 welcome credit by purchasing the pixel 4a 5G with a mobile plan (so net cost is $799-$240 = $559 + 2 months plan fees). The page notes that the welcome credit is applied by the 2nd bill. The cheapest mobile plan is currently $45 per month which includes 40gb but no 5G access (end up costing $649 for phone and 2 months access). Might be better to pair with the extra large plan which is currently discounted to $65 for 180 GB and you get 5G access ($689 for phone and 2 months access).

  • So phone would be locked to Telstra; what would the cost be to unlock it?

    • +12

      It'll be unlocked.

      • My bad; I thought all phones purchased through a Telco were locked to that provider

        • +4

Only prepaid phones are locked generally.

It's very rare for a phone bought outright, or on a postpaid plan that'll be locked

  • Won't the credit will be a bill credit rather than refund? I.e. need to use for further months' bills. Or will they pay you out if you cancel?

    • +4

Will be a credit but as you'd be paying the service month by month then you'd only pay the remaining device amount after two months.

The first bill would be $111.58 the second bill would be in credit -$128.42 and then the final cancellation would $537.38 (as it would use the amount already in credit).

In total, this adds up to $648.96.

      • Ah, I see, month by month handset payments. Thanks

Note the discounted plan fee (-$10) is when adding a new service, so I would guess either need to get a new number or port from a non-telstra/boost service.

    • Telstra overcharged me when I switched providers mid month. I was mailed a cheque, so expect it to be a similar thing if they don't want to take it off the ETC.

I'm looking at getting this phone, but linking to my $20pm Aldi plan.

    • -1

haha im also on that plan, shame new aldi customers dont have access to that tier any more lol

  • +1

    Hmm this or Google credit?

Seems like the telstra method is to get a new phone and plan then cancel after two months?

  • -1

No wireless charging is the killer for me

    • +15

Plugging it in is pretty easy though.

      • +1

I'm set up for wireless charging, plus I want to tirelessly charge my Galaxy watch from the phone rather than carry a separate charging dock and cable when I travel.

      • +1

I'm glad they took it out, don't want to pay for useless features.

    • -2

GTFO and go wait for a pixel 5 deal

  • Looks like a good deal; roughly 19% off.

Can someone look into their crystal ball and tell me if this phone will be cheaper within the next ~6 months?

    • +2

Judging from Pixel 3a's price history, one of the best offers was at launch and the price never really fell.

  • +1

Thanks OP upvoted. I'm going to be seeing what JB comes up with

Think I might hold out for a better JbHiFi Telstra deal with a giftcard to bring down the device cost

  • Any one have any idea around whether you'd be able to use the $65/180GB SIM in a 4G router like the Netgear Nighthawk M1? I'm just wondering if there might be some kind of restriction that would prevent it from being used in anything other than a phone?

    • +1

      No restrictions.

  • +2

im talking to the rep, apparently the welcome credit will get debited if we cancel the plan. so its only good for people who want to stay with the bundled telstra plan long term

    • If that is the case it is much better getting the $400 gift card with Jb for the $69 plan

    • I imagine this would kill the deal for a lot of people. Ah well!

    • Credit is applied after the 2nd bill so it should be fine to cancel after that

      • Guess they can do whatever they want with their credit and there is a chance it will happen.

For now the Google deal and use the $100 to get the Google Tv and Netflix bundle seems a better and more straight forward deal. For those who wants to get both.

    • By long term, do you mean 2 months? Or do you have to stay longer to keep the credit?

      • you gotta stay the length of the contract. so if you have a 24 month contract and bail after 2months, you only get 20 bucks worth of welcome credit overall

  • +1

Miss those deals from last year where you could get an s10e for 99 and cancel the plan after a month..plus bonus galaxy buds

  • Does it have dual SIM?

    • kind of… it can run as a dual sim but one of the sims is an esim and the other is a nano sim.

5G the new mobile phone buzz word! I have 5g and live under a 5g signal and I can guarantee 4G is fast and reliable. 5g and 5g chipsets have a ways to go before adoption! Apples first attemp is about the best, then Samsung. But I’d save your money for now for another year and either keep any decent, working 4G or a cheap Nokia ONE series dual sim 4G mobile for half the money at 200-300

    • -3

      5g signal

Any covid living under the 5g signal?

    • Agreed I don't need 5g. but the camera on the Nokia 1 series is way below average.

    • I've just jumped onto the 5G train and am getting speeds up to 450Mbps so I'd say YMMV as is the case with most new tech

FWIW I downloaded a 6gb movie in 5 min last night

      • +1

A movie you paid for im sure…. 😋

        • +1

Paid for in gigabytes and electricity ;)

"The cheapest mobile plan is currently $45 per month which includes 40gb"

I'm not seeing this? The cheapest plan looks to be $55 a month

  • -8

Credit is applied on the Telstra account so it's only worth if you continue to stay with Telstra and the phone still costs you $799 which you are paying upfront.

  • This is a good one, although I hate Telstra.

  • Wonder what the chances would be for existing customers to get this. Been waiting for deals for this phone!

    • +1

Most Telstra deals are exclusively for new customers. Got sick of waiting for a new deal seeing as last one for existing customers that I noticed was the friends and family pixel 2 deal.
Went to boost prepaid. Telstra coverage without the "premium" pricing. Will just buy next handset outright.

      • +1

Ha, I'm in the same boat - got the Pixel 2 on Family and Friends.

Boost doesn't have 5G though does it? Is the service/coverage otherwise the same as Telstra?

        • +1

Only 3/4g. Full network coverage. I've found boost to be the same so far as Telstra was.

Had a read through terms and conditions last night and it didn't say anything about only new customers so they may have finally woken up and tried to stem the bleed of current customers.

  • Sorry, what do you mean by welcome credit, ? Cash back ?

  • Can you transfer from Boost to get this deal? I couldn't see any exclusions.

    • +1

Always a no for Boost porting and welcome offers

  • Anyone have any experiences to share whether if you cancel after the 2 months, you get the phone for the cost outlined in the OP (i.e. no Telstra chargebacks etc.)

  • any chance of getting this deal (4a with 5G) without going into a JB store?

    • +1

There is a 100% chance that you can get this deal without going into a JB store, mainly because this is being offered directly from Telstra, not JB 😉

      • Ha.. oops :)

  • +1

You can only do this deal on a 55/mo plan.

I picked up two recently, one for myself and one for my partner. Sadly one was faulty which lead me to discover Google seem to have a bit of a quality control issue with the speaker on the 4A 5G, a lot of other users also reporting the exact same fault >>> lots of crackling and distortion with every sound after about 20 seconds of sustained music playback.

    https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/81318954?hl=en

My partner's device was fine. Could only be like 0.01% of devices for all I know but seems like there's a lot of posts for a very narrowly positioned device that's only just launched.
