      The new Apple MacBook with M1 CPU says 8 to 16GB RAM is plenty, so Lenovo thinks their laptop running Windows should be OK with 8GB RAM too…

    This would be pretty good for on the go productivity. That screen res and sRGB coverage as well as AMDs iGPU would be a decent combo for some light image editing.

      I wish they had same thing in 15.6" size.

      too small for creative work. at this resolution and screen size plus colour space coverage it's amazing for content consumption, but too small for editing

      bigger battery would be welcome, too

      also 8gb

      but I probably want too much

      Ain't nobody being productive or editing images with 8GB of memory.

      If I was told I could only edit images on a PC with 8GB of RAM, I just wouldn't bother. Find me a new hobby.

          I didn't like using 8gb a decade ago (laptop) and used the desktop that had 16. I don't know how large your images are I guess, or what you do to edit, just my experience for preference.

          I did do, and still do, a lot of panoramas which can get fairly large though

            @teereb: Working with 16mp and yes panoramas make sense for such large resolution. For light editing , it's fine. I wasn't left wanting and export times for images wasn't too bad either.

              100% you can edit photos with 8gb, and this was a decade ago with slower ram, and windows 7.

                I totally get it , I had 8GB ram ago in 2013 and went back to 4gb with my next laptop after that and sorely missed it.

                Either way it's a decent lappy no matter which config you get

      You are right - But $2 off with your GST calculation.

      1049 / 11 = $95 GST
      1049 - 95 = $954 Ex GST

      954 * 13% = $124
      1049 - 124 = $925.

      In summary: Divide by 11 to calculate GST amount on a 'inc GST' figure.
      … And yes, we have all spent too long doing the math here.

      I ordered the 4800u version from the previous deal but to be honest, if I were shopping for a new portable/light laptop on a budget I'd still consider it. The price differential post cashback is reasonable for the tradeoff here IMO.
      After all, with cash-back it's $912 (yes you can never trust cashback) which is around the lowest this has ever been. You'd be hard pressed to find anything similar at this price. I've seen the recent Dell inspiron laptops with inferior 250 nit screens, similar 8gb RAM and inferior Intel 10th gen processors for around this price or more.

      I think if you're shopping at sub $1000 portable laptop you have to make a compromise and this laptop would tick a lot of boxes for a lot of people

      - decent 1440p screen w 300nits
      - 4600u

          Yeah I definitely see what you mean and it's certainly a valid point.
          But at the end of the day, these trade-offs are part of the reason why it's a quasi-ultraportable small form factor laptop at 1.25kg and for some users it definitely won't be a suitable laptop but for people who do web-browsing, word processing, school students it will work well and maybe do some more intensive stuff occasionally but I can see how it might be annoying to be trying to do it all the time and run out of memory.

          I guess everyone has to consider their use cases and potential use cases because no laptop will be perfect - for $900ish with this laptop you get above average portability, above average screen, good battery life and semi-premium build quality - if you're willing to sacrifice ever being able to upgrade RAM. IMO I wouldn't pick a laptop that sacrificed those 4 benefits for RAM upgradeability alone but for someone who would - yeah waiting for the 4800u version to be on sale for $200 more is fair, or another laptop from another brand.

    Have this laptop performs pretty well. Sleep issues still and mine won't hibernate, just something to be wary of cos of the AMD chippy.

    Before anyone jumps on me, it has happened to other brand laptops of Dell, HP, Asus etc with the 4xxxu series. Your mileage may vary.

          Just stating my own experience like the person who commented below, where I haven't had any issues. I have colleagues with HP Pro Books for work with the R7 4700U CPU. No sleep issues on their end.

        thanks mate, hibernation is on but still have issues with sleep. when i close the lid, it goes to sleep and indicator light breathes. but after a minute, it stays solid. if i peek in between the gap between the screen and the keyboard, the backlighting has come on and the display too - so it has woken itself up :/

        seems to be lots of sleep issues reported with the 4500u/4700u, where folks can't wake it from sleep, on Dell/ASUS/Lenovo/HP forums. doesn't seem to be a fix yet.

        semi-fixed the sleep issues and WiFi issues by rolling back the Intel drivers, then uninstalling the devices completely, then installing the Lenovo Wifi drivers again. It took the latest Intel drivers from Intel support assistant instead, but can't roll them back now.

        Anyways Wifi works instantly from sleep/hibernate/complete-power-off again, so that's good. the first time i close the lid, the laptop remains awake, but if i do it again, then it will go to sleep. and remain asleep without waking itself up.

          are you able to fix sleep issue ? i recently got mine and noticed same issue … if I close the lid, it don't go to sleep or maybe wakes itself up … bit frustrating … I am forced to hibernate now.

      Hmm there was an undocumented recall on the Ryzen 4000 series, I only found out due to production delays and did some digging talking to manufacturers. They didn't do a recall on retail units, only stuff that was in production was pulled and the chips replaced, but no one would talk (even within these companies) about it, it was all very hush hush, so I never found out what the actual issue was. If there's a problem with the power controller that would certainly do it!

      There's too many low res laptops already .. I like this option. However be aware the USB type C on this is gimped to only 5GB/s not 10 or 20. So no 4k@60hz screen capability/docking on this machine.

        1080p is good enough for 13".
        If this were a more expensive laptop, I'd say, sure, give it more pixels.

        But this is a laptop which has to make compromises. 8GB is a far bigger compromise than 1080p on a 13" display.

      The processor in this laptop a lot faster than the one in the carbon. From experience with the 8 core, R7 4800U version, the full aluminium chassis is quite durable. It's one of the rare laptops you can adust the TDP to three different settings via the BIOS or the Lenovo Vantage software. Depending on the workload, battery life can be up to 10hrs of office use for the 8 core version, with the same size battery, on the mid tier setting, at 60% brightness.

        Thanks for the info. Just trying to read up about both. Seems like the X1 Carbon is a very durable machine and has great battery life. Although now from what you have said the Ideapad might be good too. Was hoping thought to get 16gb ram for it to last longer. Any thoughts on that? The current one has only 4gb ram and that's ridiculously slow.

          I have the 16gb version. It just depends on the workload. If it's just basic office,web browsing and entry level gaming for example, 8gb is enough.
