Only 8 gig of memory why bother :)

    • +3

8GB is fine for normal use but yeah 16GB is desirable for certain tasks and just future proofing. Shame there’s no option to upgrade to 16GB and it’s soldered so you can’t upgrade it yourself

    • +4

You're right, and there's no option to upgrade that I can see, unless you pony up $1,799 for the 4800U 16GB version.

IMO, this would be almost perfect if they just hadn't soldered the ram.

    • +1

Good enough for a cheap high school laptop.. but with the Ryzen integrated graphics it's gonna lose some of that 8GB for graphics.

      • +6

As an owner of the 4800U version, you can adjust the amount of RAM allocated to the iGPU down to 256MB in BIOS.

        • Where did you get the 4800U one from? Lenovo website? If so, how long did it take?

    • +1

i run ps and indesign at the same time, i5-8265u with 8G, no issue.

      • That's crazy, surprised there is no lag. My laptop is using 7gb of ram when it has booted to the desktop. MS Teams, Webex Meeting, Discord, SQL Server are basically the only things running aside from a couple small tray apps. Electron apps gobble ram like crazy and seems to be the new industry trend.

    • The problem in this case it is not the amount of memory but a single stick kills performance.

      • +1

The 8GB RAM is dual channel, soldered. Not single channel.

        • +1

Where did you get there I tried to check on their spec doesn't say anything about being 2 memories sticks there.

          • @Femelo: It's not two SO-Dimms. The 8GB RAM is soldered. You can have soldered RAM running in dual channel. I have the Ryzen 4800U version, with single lot 16gb soldered and it is running dual channel.

            • +1

@shellshocked: Ah really? How that works? I will try to google it never heard 1 slot running at dual channel.

  • +1

If you need to know the approximate performance of the Ryzen 4600U

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+5+4600U&i…

    • wait 4600u is better than 4700u

      • +3

Depending on the application. If the application needs 12 threads, the Ryzen 4600u should perform better. If the application just needs 8 physical cores, the Ryzen 4700U will be faster.

        • Ah so 4700u doesn't have hyperthreading

          • +3

@ln28909: Yes the 4700u lacks AMD's version, called SMT, which is superior to Intel's Hyper-threading.

  • We have the 4800u/16GB Ram version of this laptop and it is fantastic!

Big upgrade from our previous HP Spectre 360!

    • Same, awesome laptop. Very fast and good display.

      • How is the build quality compare to XPS or Vostro? and warranty service compare to Dell?

        • XPS and Vostro and better

    • +2

I suspect 8 GB RAM cripples this though.
I'd probably jump on it if it was 4800u/16GB ram +$200.

      • +2

That model is $1269 through the Lenovo education store

        • +1

Looking at picking this up for uni next year, but with the 8 week wait for shipping I'm sure a deal on something else will show up.

          • @Jakeo: Black Friday / Cyber Monday soon.

    • I also asked shellshocked this in a comment above, but the more info the merrier… Where did you get the 4800U one from? Lenovo website? If so, how long did it take?

  • I'm guessing no cashback because of the coupon? Paging @tightarse??

    • +1

If it's a coupon from Lenovo (given by them on their own site) it's fine with cashback.

  • Got this model and have had sleep issues that haven't been able to be resolved by Lenovo.

Something to be aware of i guess with these early built batches

    • +1

What exactly are the sleep issues?

      • goes to sleep after two minutes regardless of power plan settings. i've troubleshooted with Lenovo over the phone, tried reinstalling Windows, updating drivers/windows, resetting BIOS, everything you can think of.

gonna wait a few months to see if Lenovo comes out with another BIOS update or their drivers, if not, will have to refund cos its a dud unit.

        • +1

I had a Lenovo laptop that was having similar sleep issues. The things I did that seemed to fix it were:

Disabled the ‘turn on fast startup’ setting in Windows

When changing the power plan settings go into the advanced power settings to check and adjust the sleep times (or disable) for both power and battery

          • @snuffent: Tried both and they didn't work :(

Googling online and lots of folks with Lenovos in their forums seem to have sleep issues. Could be just a bad batch but still bums me out

Try using the Zen Jiggle mode

  • Also, bought the same model a couple of months ago for 1200. Can I get credit card protection for the price difference 🤔

    • -1

      Yes, always use protection.

  • On second thought, despite the shortage of RAM being a pretty disappointing flaw, it's a good value ultra portable.
Fast CPU, great 13" screen and only 1.2KG!!!.
Plus a few things you don't often find on sub $1,000 notebooks, 11ax, 2x2, aluminium chasis
If you need something to lug around to school or university then this is a deal. Just don't expect games to run as well as on other Ryzen portables.

  • Is there a 15" version of this laptop?

  • Any idea how this 16gb version would handle big photoshop files?

    • +1

Only the AMD Ryzen 4800u 8 core/16 thread version of this laptop has 16GB. It can easily handle Photoshop files, no problem. The Ryzen 4600U would have no issue either with Photoshop files. However you would be limited to the size of the files managed due to 8GB of RAM on this laptop. These are the some of the fastest processors you can get at the moment in this laptop form factor.

  • +1

    need 16gb

    • Likewise, we probably have to hold out for black friday

  • +1

13" QHD IPS micro scopic text lol

    • I have the 4800U version of this laptop, no issues with reading text at QHD res.

  • +1

8 gb RAM is a no go to be honest and its soldered.

    • +2

dunno why the down vote. It's not just 8gb that's the problem, it's the fact that its soldered on meaning there's no capability to upgrade in the future so you're stuck with 8gb FOREVER!

      • Thats like a movie name …. 8gb Forever

  • @shellshocked … any inside news of Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro with Ryzen 9 ?

    • +1

$3000 it will be . Even the Slim 7 with the 4800U is $2500+, so the Slim 7 Pro will be $3000 territorry.

      • Damn … thats expensive … but when it will be released in aust ? … i hope they will run some promotions and considering that i update after 5, 6 years … i can stretch my limits a bit.

    • +1
      • Thats very disappointing for 2021 Yoga … seems they are going backwards.

  • +1

16Gb R7 version is $1269 through Lenovo education. Anyone knows if there is any discount I can apply?

    • Oh … its cheaper than below deal … that was a great price too … is $1269 for HappyHour only ? How long it will go ? I need to call some students 🤣

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/564444

      • +1

It's been 1269 for about a month on edu store

        • Oh thanks … i dont have access to edu store so i had no idea.

I would love to wait for Yoga Slim 7 Pro with R9 and 16:10 … if they top it up with Carbon model, it would be great.

  • Do you guys reckon there will be a better deal for the 16GB R7 model on black friday sales??

    • The only issue at the moment is the 8 weeks wait time. It's a very popular product.

    • I just checked my crystal ball but even that replied "unsure"

      • Your crystal ball is in Victoria ?

  • not enough inbuilt USB-A for me 😔😔😔

  • Pissed I missed it.

    • me too, I'm in the hunt for something just like this and im really sad I decided not to pick it up at the time

  • @shellshocked … Hi … i got ideapad s540 13 ARE today … battery was flat on arrival … is it something to worry and shall i charge it for 24hours first time as per hp site ?
