I've been somewhat tempted to switch my XS for one of these but people always bring up the touch issues with some people saying they're solved others saying to avoid the phone, anyone want to chime in? Also is it worth the nearly $200 to buy an Australian version over one of these grey market ones?

    • +2

If you do have an issue, being able to walk into store, or just send back to amazon will likely be worth it over dealing with a grey market seller imo.
Of course that is always the risk, sometimes no issues…other times…

      • Who would be easier to deal with, JB or Amazon?

    • +16

I have the phone and have the touch screen issue. Have tested 3 other S20 FE and all all exhibit the same issue. I unfortunately ordered direct from Samsung and they are forcing me to take it into a samsung store for a full assessment before even considering a refund. They are claiming that it is due to being outside of the 30 days, even though I raised the issue in the first week with them and they claimed a firmware update would fix it so I waited. 2 firmware updates and the issue is still there. I would definitely avoid this phone.

      • +4

Alright, thanks, guess i'll wait to see what comes out next year.

        • +1

FWIW JB were easy to deal with when I took mine back. Showed them a screen recording of the issues and they immediately begun the return process. Gave me the option to either swap it out for another but I wanted to take gift cards so I could pick up something else (which is what the invoice showed I paid with).

      • +3

Wow thanks for sharing the experience, was considering this for both me and my wife to replace note 8 and pixel 2 xl… But have no patience for this type of issue. What you are experiencing is unacceptable, hope you can get it fixed. There are many others it seems with similar experiences on reddit and other sites.

      • +1

I had that occasionally where I'd try to type something and the phone was just doing whatever it wanted instead, being real laggy and pretty much useless until I restarted it. I wondered if it was my phone or the screen protector I had bought it. Glad to know it's not just me with this.

      • +3

This is exactly my issue as well. Going to the Samsung store this week to hopefully get a refund. They've been very dismissive so far from all of my interactions with them. Avoid this phone.

      • Samsung have never had a good record with service. The last Samsung product I own is a Microwave and I rang them the other day to get a trim kit for it (the surround thingy that makes it look better). Samsung Phone support was useless and they just told me to call a repairer. Every repairer I called had no idea why Samsung were asking me to call them, and they all made disparaging comments about them.

Take from that what you will, but I see no reason to give them my money ever again.

I also was considering FE however as I need a dual sim phone, FE is not an option as the OZ version does not support that. I have asked JB-Hifi and Optus shop and both confirm no dual sim for FE here. what a shame.

      • +1

Maybe consider Mate 20 Pro? It's dual sim supported.
        Old but stil very good.

      • +1

they have esim+sim but i need sim+sim.. might have to import one..

        • The FE have eSim+SIM? The bloke at JB told me not available for OZ version, is he mistaken? I don't mind eSIM + SIM as I can move my main SIM to eSIM, and save the 2nd SIM slot for overseas travel, when we can do that again.

Currently I'm still on S8+ (Dual SIM version), still happy with it so I might just hold off upgrading.

Or are you talking about Mate 20 Pro?

          Thanks mate.

          • +1

            @mantoh: i'm using FE 5G and mate 20 pro.
the FE has sim+esim. Mate 20 Pro has sim + sim.
The FE is a good phone at this price. the touch screen issue does exist with my phone but it's not that noticeable. Completely okay for normal daily tasks.

            • @anhtram222: Thanks @anhtram222, did you get overseas model of the FE? Coz I just chat with Samsung AU and they said OZ version of the FE only support single SIM, confirming my chats with JB and Optus.

              • +1

@mantoh: I got mine from friends so I'm not sure. If they already advised you so then it should be true.

        • I'm curious about the need for two sim slots. From what I can see most dual sim phones only support 2G freqs on the second sim. All the networks had shut off their 2G bands by 2018, Christmas & Norfolk Islands notwithstanding.

What do you use the 2nd sim for?

          • +1

@BinaryPirate: Would be a surprise if the big boys dont support fully 4G/4G on both SIM slots

          • +1

@BinaryPirate: Hi @BinaryPirate, it's true for Australia, however overseas in developing countries, 2G networks are still working well.

With S8+ dual sim phone, the 2nd sim slot support 2G/3G, so it works well here. The reason I use Dual Sim phone is I have work and private numbers, so I can carry just 1 phone instead of 2 phones with me. Plus when I'm overseas, I can swap SIM #2 with local SIM card and save money instead of using roaming.

    • +1

Tried one out at JB in store (and I'd suggest you do the same). Definitely felt buggy - wasn't able to properly close apps (it'd constantly escape the multitasking screen/glitch) and that completely turned me off the phone.

    • +4

With a phone like this that has some well documented, wide-spread issues, you would definitely want Australian stock so that you can return it if you get a dodgy one. Dealing with warranty and returns on grey imports is generally a massive headache.

    • +1

I bought mine on 10 Oct as part of the Telstra deal. Did not notice the screen touch issues. The Oct fireware update actually brought the ghost touch and freezing. I returned it to JB last Saturday. It was over the 30 day period but they still processed the refund after I showed them the issue using a screen touch app. Got refunded cash in full.

      JB is GREAT!

    • I've had my Samsung S20 FE 5G 128GB for over a month now. I am happy with the battery life which lasts about a day or over. I bought mine from Cellmate.

  • +1

I would get it from JBs, $899, unless Amazon can do a better deal on the day, which I reckoned they will.

    • +8

Lmao wow the lack of Google knowledge with this one has hit a new low

        • +8

          needed quick info

34 mins in and still unanswered :/

          • +1

@skido: Yet a Google search would have answered the question in under 30 seconds.

    • +1

This is useful page for comparison but unsure if it is correct about the processor used in each one.

    • +2

5G has snapdragon and 4g version comes with exynos. Otherwise they are same.

  • +1

I picked up the 128GB+5G version for $514 via the Samsung store because i swapped in my Note 9,512GB+$200 off trade in bonus (this was late last month) I'm very happy with it.

I can even run a 3DS emulator (it was laggy on my note 9)

My only complaint is; that you have to buy a seperate charger if you want to super fast charge it.

    • -3

Note 9 is now worth more than this and is built much better, but as long as your happy with the decision that's what matters.

      • +2

it is? Tbh,I don't know about phones 😂

I'm someone who wants the latest Android version. the note 9 is done with os updates.

Apparently, the S20 will be getting three years of them.

      • -1

        Build quality is useless if:
        - it has outdated camera hardware
        - a battery that is now 3yrs old
        - software updates no longer supported
        - 3 year old SoC (vs Snapdragon 865)

Not sure if your comment is a joke!
Then again, my Nokia 5110 is worth more than ever - much better build quality and battery life. So secure it doesn't need updates.

  • Happy with my 4G. Works well. Though in-screen fingerprint scanners are always horrible.

  • +4

Do not buy due to screen issues.

  • -3

Screen issues are exaggerated. Most people claiming problems are only seeing issues in that "screen test" app but not in real usage. There have been 2 updates to address it too.
I don't have any problems. My partner had one issue but nothing since update. Very good phone imo.

    • +9

Just because you don't have issues doesn't mean other's aren't. Even if it's not widespread, and only a select batch. The whole situation is a major turnoff for a $1000 phone. Even cheapo China droids don't have rubbish problems like this.

    • +5

It's actually 3 updates and if they were 'exaggerated', there wouldn't have been 3 updates.

    • +2

      I also have no issues

    • +2

Not true (as in not exaggerated). I initially only had issues in the app. but not day to day. After one of the many updates my phone got worse.. my screen then started to lag really really bad.

Scrolling through websites would look like 30hz and often stutter and jump around. I recorded this and showed JB when I returned it and after one look they agreed it was not right.

This started happening after one of the updates and also a few days after a factory reset and had barely installed any apps yet. I had factory reset it to try and start fresh after getting hopeless battery life (yes I had the SD version).

    • YMMV but I had the ghost screen touches issue from about day 2 to day 10 and drove me mad. But after 2 weeks, it was updated and it's fortunately gone!

    • +3

I'm not paying $1000 for a phone that doesn't pass a simple screen test.

    • +3

They are not exaggerated. Those that do have the issues do suffer real world issues. Pinching to zoom is still buggy as hell even after the 3rd update. If it's not widely exaggerated, why would Samsung spend time and effort with 3 updates purely targeting "touchscreen improvements". Keyword: Improvement. Not a fix. It's a hardware issue plain and simple. I've tested phones in store and they all display the same issue. Did not even use the touch screen test app, it was just a simple pinch to zoom. They all failed.

It's great that your phone works, but please don't gaslight those of us who do have issues.

    • +2

The phone is busted, no two ways about it. Already returned mine, got a brand new replacement, same issue, returned that, waiting 2 weeks+ for resolution. Just a headache all around. Avoid avoid avoid.

  • Curious, would you recommend the S20 5G or the S20 FE 5G?

    • +2

FE 5G has a better SoC (SD865 vs Exynos 990) and battery life - so would recommend the 5g.

      • +1

But the S20 doesn't suffer from the widespread touch issues that many FE users are experiencing.

        • +2

Apologies - I thought you were asking about S20 FE 4G and FE 5G.
There's a bit more to consider on regular S20 5G vs S20 FE 5G. The SoC comment still stands, but some other aspects of design and performance may be better on the regular S20 (e.g has more RAM).

  • S20 may be better, my S20FE has touchscreen problem as well. I am dealing with mobileciti who asked me to return the handset for assessment.

    • Try an update to the firmware - removed my issues totally

      • +1

Thanks buddy, I did that already and noticed issue the very next day

        • Sorry to hear that Big Deal… I wonder whether they have a large number of defective units then, or a software issue they haven't fixed.

  • Looks like Amazon have also dropped 5G to $899. Should I hold off until Wednesday or buy now?

    • price beat @ officework :)

      • Great idea, will give it a go!

      • Unfortunately they have already matched the 4G version

        • may have someone spying on ozbargain constantly.

          • @dts88: I just purchased the 5G variant at Officeworks for $854.05. So thanks for your tip!!

            • +1

@23nuggetz: mate, you have to send it back, and do another price beat

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/583498

              849 - 5 % = 806.55

              • @dts88: Ah crap hahaha, thanks mate.

              • @dts88: I doubt they'll count this because you need to sign up to a plan to get it at this price at telstra or need a sign upcode to get the same price through Samsung website. That said, it looks like this is about the price they'll all be going for for Black Friday so someone else should offer one around $750 by Friday

  • Hmm wonder when will hit $800

  • +4

It's a shame. Great phone on paper, lemon in reality

  • Was the 256gb 5g limited edition? Can’t find it anywhere these days.

  • thought apple was pretty crap with their iPhone 12 lineup but this touchscreen issue is even worse. guess 2020 isn't the year for phones!

  • +1

Is this better than the flip one?

  • +1

Was going to go one of these when price was right but hesitant after reading about issues.
Anyone have any thoughts on a pixel 5?

  • Samsung store has the 4G variant as $799, using the $50 sign up code is $749

  • My S20 FE phone was assesed my Samsung as "no fault" and returned to me with latest software update. Pinch to zoom is mostly fine now - laggy scrolling is fixed. I'd say it's much better now - but still hesitate to reccomend it.
