$2/month for high quality 99.9% uptime 3GB space / 30 GB bandwidth web hosting at Hawkhost

v25percent-OR-s20percent

Coupons for shared, reseller and VPS hosting (updated July 1, 2009):

  • v25percent: recurring 25% off VPS hosting (2010-08-01 expiry)
  • s20percent: recurring 20% off Shared hosting (never expires?)

Obviously, the best value is from getting a yearly purchase. For beginning to maybe even mid level sites, I recommend normal "web hosting", the "basic" plan should suffice for most.

Quick intro:

Hawkhost is a highly reputable web host, see sites such as http://webhostingtalk.com for confirmation, it is up there with other high rep shared hosting providers such as Steadfast and MediaLayer. Servers are based in US (data centres are geographically dispersed so almost negligible impact for most Australian users though)

Plan summary for recommended plan:

  • 3 GB disk space
  • 30 GB bandwidth per month (this is plenty, ignore hosts that over sell hundreds of GBs)
  • Apache
  • PHP 5 (what common scripts such as phpBB, osCommerce etc. use)
  • Zend Optimiser for PHP and Ioncube Loader if needed
  • Perl
  • Python
  • Ruby on Rails
  • SSH access
  • Mysql with unlimited databases
  • PostgreSQL with no database limit
  • Subversion and Trac (rare among web hosts)

Hosting features:

  • 99.9% uptime with SLA (discount if service performs below 99.9%, complete refund if uptime is under 99%)
  • No petty restrictions such as disallowing remote connections
  • CPanel control panel (the gold standard for shared hosting)
  • No limits on addon domains, FTP accounts, email accounts, subdomains etc.
  • Plenty of included stats analysis tools, included scripts such as osCommerce and more

Total cost of ownership:

For the basic plan (3GB disk space and 30GB bandwidth):

~ $22 over a year (~$1.80 a month)

For the super plan (24GB disk space and 240GB bandwidth):

~ $70 over a year (~$6 a month)

Payment can be made through PayPal or credit card.

I recommend getting a WHOIS protected domain for about $7/year at 1and1.com and use that with the hosting.

Disclaimer: I done this to finally submit a deal after taking part in many after this and only found out about the affiliate program during writing this. If it is bad netiquette to use an affiliate link here, let me know and I'll take it down or you can simply remove the aff= part of the URL. Please note the affiliate link does not affect your order and I'd appreciate you keeping it in return for a hand written review and find after hours of research into reliable and cheap web hosts after having several bad experiences with previous hosts.

  • Seems like a top deal, shame I just renewed mine.. would be happy to use your affiliate link if I was going to :)

  • looks good.

  • Thanks for disclosing being an affiliate. I don't say it is a "bad netiquette" because you'll still have to pay the same price regardless whether someone else is earning the commission or not. However at the same time I'll say it is not encouraged, as otherwise everyone with a CJ other affiliate account is going to posting "deals" all over OzBargain.

However from what I have seen, Hawk Host seems to be a one man shop doing it in part time while attending college, etc. It's good if they can keep up the work, but I'll be hesitated to bring my websites over.

    • I see. I'll keep that in mind.

As for Hawk Host being a one man shop, I doubt that as there are at least a few staff members (edit: as Cody pointed out). Besides, I am yet to see the down side to that and am only experiencing the personalisation and much closer level of support. In fact, it is one of the few places where people go out of their way to write good reviews about it and these are people that have had hosting with them for over a year. Nevertheless, I can understand one being hesitant to change over to them making this more suitable for entry level sites.

      • god that was difficult to read…

  • Quite the contrary we're not a one man shop - it was namely ran by two individuals for a couple of years (Andrew / Tony) and eventually got bought out completely by Tony.. so there was a large stint where he was the only person behind it, but now we have several staff members behind it.

If you have any concerns about our stability / company feel free to ask us or check us out on WebHostingTalk.com or any other hosting review site.

Any who, thanks for the post fenerli, I got referred here by one of our clients :).
