[eBay Plus] Atomos Connect USB HDMI Capture Device $107.20 Delivered @ digiDIRECT

51
PLUSBF20

edit: Better watch this review first. You'll get better support from Atomos but it might not be worth the big price premium.

Also available directly from digiDirect for $113.90 C&C. Thanks to RichardL for the eBay tip!

Move over Elgato CamLink, we finally have a big-name competitor that's far cheaper.
Atomos, the famous Melbourne company who makes reasonably high-end video capture gear, has released a really low-cost UVC USB HDMI capture dongle.

It allows any HDMI device to appear as a webcam, so you can use your new A7C to Zoom at 35/1.4 in full HD (the Imaging Edge webcam feature is a paltry 1024x576). Or you can use it to stream with OBS, or anything that can use a webcam.

It can accept up to 4K30 and 1080p60.

I find that recent generic capture card is doing a great job at around $15. You can find them on eBay or Amazon AU

    • It depends on how picky you are with quality and whether or not you want to capture at 4K. I have one of those cheap generic capture dongles too, and the quality is noticeably poorer. Here's a review with a sample image that someone else posted.

      • I've found no noticeable difference. Just getting mono sound.

Same. My webcam broke but had a sony fdr-x3000 with clean hdmi out, so that with a $15 adapter has been much cheaper for me than a new webcam.

  • Does this provide stereo sound? The generic one that I got for under $20 off ebay is just mono.

    • Doesn't look like it, it's clone of the $15 cards

      • That's a bummer. I'm looking to have something available when I do stream an event and grab the sound from the sound desk. I'd like it to go to the camera to eliminate syncing issues.

    • Mmm, that's disappointing. I expected more from a reputable Australian company. Looks like the Cam Link may still have its place.

I like a lot of Atomos' gear, but some might sneer at 'reputable' - Atomos was founded by two senior Blackmagic employees, a year before they resigned, specifically to compete against Blackmagic.

Hmm, how does that relate to the good reputation Atomos products have?

    • wow do they have no shame? that's really disappointing…

      • Yeah, they're tarnishing their reputation. Prior to this I'd have no qualms with any of their products. Now I'll have to think twice and do some research first!

        • This video changed my perspective of Atomos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0cexzJLVIs
This straight clone rip has put a nail in the coffin for me.

          • @camshandez: Hmm, I didn't think it was that bad. The main thing that stood out to me (apart from the huge amount of waffling blablabla) was how close they were standing to each other. Ahh, those pre-COVID days!

    • good idea - apple could bring out a white one for $159

  • EDIT: falseprofit beat me to it.

As a few people have pointed out this is a rebrand of the super cheap capture cards you can find on ebay, amazon and ali express.

Which are actually really nice and work great. I took a punt on one for about $15 delivered and couldnt be happier. Thinking of grabbing a second one actually.

    • Which are actually really nice and work great. I took a punt on one for about $15 delivered and couldnt be happier.

I have one myself, the quality definitely isn't up to par with "proper" ones, but for $15 they're great if you don't need top quality capture.

      • I havent done a side by side with a Elgato Camlink personally. But from the videos I have seen where they are put head to head there isnt a significant amount of quality difference. User setup and the camera itself have a far bigger impact on the quality. Crap in crap out as they say.

I have a Sony A6600 w/sigma 16mm lens and it captures perfectly into OBS. And if for instance your application is to use it for streaming to twitch as a facecam. After encoding and scaled to a corner of your screen. They will be on par with eachother. I havent done a direct test of 1080p filmed vs 1080p capture on my computer as its almost redundant. You get a CC todo a particular task so whether or not you get max quality is irrelevant imo.

That said at somepoint I will probably upgrade to a camlink 4k so I can capture the full resolution of my camera at a high bit rate. But really for the sake of $15 I think everyone who streams, youtubes or a photographer/videographer should have one of them in their bag. It's small and useful. Even just as a back up.

The biggest test is how long they last. Who knows they might be dead in 3 months and which point you need to replace it.

I hadn't done a side-by-side myself so I just did a test. I fed a 1080p signal into each of the capture devices I had on hand:
          100% crop
          200% crop

          That's quite a difference IMHO. But I wasn't expecting much for $16. :)

  • Like others said this is just a rebrand but the same hardware as the sub 20 dollar hdmi capture cards seen elsewhere. If that's the case they don't even do 1080p60 so I'm calling this out as overpriced and misleading.

    • I accidently put this as a positive but it should be a negative :(
