yes. the red background one is the second generation. it means that it has better battery life. As for price, the best I have come across is $349 for the bundle on black Friday. Amazon deal. Gone in a min if you aren't watching the deal like a hawk. I was looking to buy one for a few weeks. Did some research. The price seems to be at $400+ this year due to covid. At the odd occasion that you could find a good condition second hand at $300 without games but those also gone in a second — I tried to make offer twice and failed. Only you can judge if this is a good price. I would say anything below $400 brand new is a reasonable price. Just not the historic cheapest. As for the 8 yrs old kid, I can't advise on that. I heard mario kart is good.

Power on/off won't work. I cant remember about volume. Ended up returning the Apple TV I bought, needing two controllers was a deal breaker for me.
