Laptop with touchscreen - suggestions please?

Can anyone recommend a deal with a touch screen? My 11 year old needs a laptop for school next year and the school says it has to be one that they can write on the screen with a stylus.

Many thanks

Edit: this is for first year of highschool, and should last him till year 12. I don't want to spend much more over $1,000 if possible.

  • That rules out the newfangled macs.

Your options would then chromebooks, windows laptops and iPads w/ keyboard.

Might be best to see what the other requirements are.

Whatever you do don't get a surface. Not suitable for youngsters. Look into Acer spin series, Toshiba dyna or lenovo yoga series. All good devices. Go with an i5 / 8GB / 256 SSD.

  • Do you have a certain budget in mind? You'll find plenty of options within Dell, Lenovo, HP etc. depending upon how much you intend to spend. I'd suggest get something that can last at least until your child can finish primary school.

Also consider how long your child is expected to use this. Where we are, as soon as they go to secondary school, they usually ave a different requirement - so different laptop again!

  • I bought my daughter a Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga last year for her BYOD and she quite likes it. The included pen goes into a slot inside the chassis so you don't lose it (I think pretty important for kids). It was cheap earlier this year as it's a 2 generation older product, but unfortunately I don't think Lenovo is selling that anymore.

  • Couple of things to think about here. Usually the school will have a preferred supplier. While not bargains, they will work with the school tech, have onsite support (depending on the school I guess, our local high school does) and you’ll generally be set and forget. I bought a different laptop (lenovo yoga) via an ozbargin deal and while ok, I’ve had to deal with some wifi issues myself - the school could only help so far.

Consider the insurance. They will drop it at some point. My daughter did in the first week of high school.

Which leads me to the bag - there’s a pretty good reason to consider something like the Targus 13.3" Contego Armoured Slip Case. While they’re emptying bags into lockers, generally being clumsy, a case like this with a shoulder strap is gold.

Also, the laptop is unlikely to last to year 12. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Oh, also, our school is pretty much all google apps, so mostly in a web browser. Ram helps here, cpu, graphics card specs, not so much.

So don’t worry too much about specs, if they go into graphic design etc, then that’s a different story, but a few years away.

Appears my post has been extended till Cyber Monday

A "refurbished" Latitude 5310 2-in-1 with 3 years warranty (downgraded from 3 Years Onsite NBD to 3 Years Basic Onsite after remote diagnosis) seems to be a good fit for you

Will be just under or over the $1000 mark you're stating as a requirement
Also, these have easy to upgrade SSD and RAM slots

Downgrade the warranty and save around $150~ off the list price

    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 5
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 5
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 1
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 2
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 1
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 1
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 1
    Latitude 13 - 5310 2-in-1 Laptop 1

    Stylus/Pen is sold separately.

Latitude series (business class) should be able to take a beating much more than the other consumer level options

  • how about this one?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-flex-5-14-inc…

It doesnt have Digital pen, but i plan to buy it separately. Its $ 1096 for R5-4500U/8GB/512GB SSD 2 in 1 Device

Please suggest if its a good deal - am too looking for a student laptop.

  • Many thanks for the suggestions.

It is so confusing! The school has a deal with JB Hifi (and I can get Gift Vouchers for 3% off through Macquarie Bank) to provide:

    Microsoft Surface Pro 7 / 12.5 Touch / i5 / 8GB / 128GB / KB + Pen / W10Pro / Platinum / 2YR Standard Warranty with pen and case for $1537.77 (256 GB model +$200)

    • HP Probook x360 435 G7 / 13.3 Touch / AMD Ryzen 5 / 8GB / 256GB / Pen / Win10 Home / 1 Year Onsite Warranty $1179

    • Lenovo L13 Gen 1 Yoga / 13.3 Touch / i5 / 8GB / 256GB / Win10Home / Pen / Silver / 3 Year Depot Warranty with a ThinkPad Pen Pro $1228

Then they have a second provider who offers:

    • HP Elitebook x360 830 G7 / 13.3 Touch / i5 / 8GB / 256GB / Pen / Win10 Home / 3 Year Onsite Warranty $1612

    • HP ProBook x360 435 G7 13.3" Ryzen 3 Touchscreen + Pen/ 8GB / 256 GB /Windows 10 Home/1 year onsite warranty $1061

    • HP ProBook 5 version of the above, $1,200

    • HP Elitebook G30 G7/12.3"/ i5 / 8GB / 128 GB / Windows 10 Home / 1 year warranty $1533

On top of that, Dell has a 25-40% off deal until 3 December on lots of 2 in 1s https://deals.dell.com/en-au/category/popular-laptop-deals

So many pricepoints and options… I just want something that is going to last five years and will be good quality. What would you choose if you are happy to spend up to the $1600 ish?

    • Edit: this is for first year of highschool, and should last him till year 12. I don't want to spend much more over $1,000 if possible.

What happened to the $1,000 budget?

      Did you consider my suggestion?

What did you like or did you not like from it?

My Latitude 5310 2-in-1s are around $1K (after warranty downgrade)
1150~1180* if you keep the 3 years NBD warranty option
+ i5 10th gen (none of your options list what option it is
      + 8GB RAM
      + 256GB SSD
      + 2-in-1
+ 3 years warranty (whether you keep the current option as Next Business Day Onsite, or downgrade to Basic Onsite as advised)
      + Business class
+ Upgradeable (as its business class it has to be made to be serviceable)
32GB RAM can be had for $140 if you need
1TB SSD can be had for $150

The Latitude 5310 2-in-1 was released mid-way through 2020, Dell Outlet refurbished is not like any other refurbished goods
If you look up reviews, you'll see many arrive in new condition (even if they've labelled them as refurbished)

The sale is supposed to have ended, but is still currently active.
The next chance it will happen again is somewhere in December.

Since it's for school, I assume you need it before the start of the next school term?
