Canon 50mm F1.8 Lens @ $83 @ JB Hi-Fi

740

Thanks to previous Canon 1100D post (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/58188) which helped me to get a cheap DSLR ($435 + a free bag from Domayne).

Got a receipt from another forum yesterday and successfully matched a Canon 50mm F1.8 lens this morning for $83 only from JB Hifi Warrawong.

I believe this is the best price either in store or online.

JB direct import is selling this for $96+$15 postage.
DWI selling this for $114 if I recall correctly.

So here's my receipt for you guys to try, though I wish I could give all the credit to the original bargain hunter Mel10125 on bbs.oursteps.com.au (a chinese forum).

Oh by the way this is a great lens at that price but the 50mm 1.4 and the 30mm 1.4 from Sigma are worth the extra dollars if you can get them, a full stop of light makes a huge difference and the 30mm on a small frame camera will give you a 50mm perspective due to the smaller frame having a 1.6 magnification, meaning 30mm x1.6 = 48mm.. (this is the same perspective as the human eye), the 50mm on a small frame camera gives you an 80mm perspective and you will find you have to step back a couple of feet to do group photos..

        • +1

A word of warning regarding Sigma lenses - yes, they are great lenses if you have a sharp copy, but they are known for having QC issues. I would recommend that if you want to buy any Sigma lenses, to do so locally through CR Kennedy, Sigma's local suppliers who (according to whirlpool forums anyways) willing to match the price of grey imports. That way you can test the lens in-store to make sure that there's no issues with AF. My copy of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 had such inconsistent AF (it would sometimes front-focus, sometimes back-focus, and yet other times get it right) that I couldn't use it without worrying about missing shots due to inaccurate AF…

How did he manage to get it this cheap!! That's a great price for a nifty fifty!

  • +5

love my nifty 50, must have lens !

Great deal, correct spelling is "Lens" :)

JB HIFI in Macquarie Centre, North Ryde not honouring this. It's a rule that they won't take a printed receipt as proof of purchase. Or perhaps not a printed receipt when it's such a low price…

    • +1

Yeah it's not like they could verify the receipt by calling the other store or perhaps even in their own database (like Good Guys can do)…

    • +1

I know for a fact that they can look up the receipt number to check if it is real. They did it at JB leichhardt when I bought my 60D from there via matching a receipt someone put up here. They were amazed at the price, looked up the receipt number (well they looked up some number up from the receipt) and they confirmed that it was real and gave it to me for that price. Also the receipt was from a different JB. I would demand to talk to the manager or something.

    • +1

Yeah called jbhifi in world square. They are not willing to price match that as its below their costs

  • Will this lense give u a nice shallow depth of field?

    • Reasonable question :)

DOF will obviously not be as shallow as a 1.4 lens but for a head only shot at 1.8 you will still have to be careful with your focus point to get enough DOF to handle say an oblique angle face.

At 1.4 you would have to choose which part of the face you want to be sharp.

      • Ah ok cheers for the tip. Would it be too shallow for a whole body shot?

        • No - as the physical depth of field increases as you increase the shooting distance. easiest way to think of this is as if it is a percentage of the shooting distance - this may be wrong on a precise theoretical basis but it is fine for setting up a shot.

  • hey just a Q. I also got the EOS1100D for $400. It comes with a 18-55mm lens so what will a 50mm lens (this deal) do.
Obviously i'm a newbie to this thing so any info would help.
I thought the idea was to get eg an 18-55 and then a 55-100 or 55-300 etc

Prime lens advantages (prime lens means without zoom)
      - Almost always sharper
      - Lower apeture (f/stop) offers better depth of field. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
      - Lower apeture offers better low light shooting without a flash or motion blur
      - Usually much smaller and lighter

      Disadvantage
      - You have to use your feet to zoom.

      • +2

The F/1.8 apeture will give you a shallower depth of field than most other lenses. Whether this is better or not depends on what kind of photos you want. It should be good for portraits and arty shots (eg where you want an out-of-focus background). It would work well in low light conditions.

      • +2

its actually "high" aperture, lower number means higher..

    • im also new at this
this link might be helpful to you
      http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/best-digital-slr-lens.html

  • Awesome lens, can highly recommend it for my portrait shots, the detail for the price kicks ass on my normal kit lens.

  • 50mm f1.8 will help you in low light and give your photos a shallow depth of field (only a slight section of the photo is in focus and the rest is blurred, for example the person is in focus and the background is blurred). Its cheap and its sharp as hell when you stop it down (good light conditions). It is essential for anyone with a DSLR twin or single kit.

The 55-250mm is a telescopic lens with no effect on light gathering ability. It will allow you to get closeup on far away targets, however because it starts at 55mm you will struggle to use it for closer targets (lack of room to focus).

  • +1

Wouldn't honour it at JB Belconnen. Boo!

  • I am not sure if it is the same lens I found on shopbot.com.au. Cheapest is $37 plus shipping.

    link

    http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-canon-ef-50mm-f1-8-ii-price-324…

    • hong kong retailer…. you wont get warranty service in australia.
plus, you need to add $74 shipping, making it more expensive anyway!

      • +1

thousands of ppl in australia bought from hk retailers, such as eglobaldigitalcamera or dwi. generally all good. on the other hand, no point to stress the local warranty for a cheap simple prime lens like this 50/1.8. i dont have warranty on my nikon 70-200/2.8 vr2.
but if anyone only wants such a cheap lens, it is true the deal posted is very good considering the high shipping.

    • Yeah… when "plus shipping" is roughly +$75, doesn't make it much of a deal does it?

  • Does anybody know a deal for a similar lens for Nikon. I've got Nikon D5100 and it came with 18-55 kit lens. That's all I have. I am new to DSLR as well. According to the posts above, this is a good lens to have. Especially for portraits.

    • Nikon has the 50mm f1.8G that works with D5100. But pricing might be a bit dearer as it's just recently released.

Please not that AF-D lenses (including 50mm f1.8D, which is the older version and much cheaper compared to the G version) will NOT autofocus on D5100.

      • Thanks for the information Josu. Now I have to wait for a deal for Nikkor 50mm f1.8G. Hope a deal will comeup soon.

      • -1

The Nikon 50 mm f/1.8D will autofocus on the D5100.
"As a traditional AF lens (not gelded as a G), it works with every Nikon ever made, digital and film, auto and manual focus."
        http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm

It works well on my D7000

        • +1

          Interestingly mr Kenrock contradicts himself:

"Older AF and AF-D lenses have no AF Mode switch, but that's OK, because they can't autofocus with the D5100: they are always in Manual focus mode."

          http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5100/af-settings.htm

D7000 has built-in motor and thus AF-D lenses will autofocus with it.

  • Great price for grey stock. Amazing price for Aus stock!

  • This is my ONLY lens, and I love it! I mainly use it for taking pictures of stuff I sell online.

Bought it online from a HK seller for about $110 about 18 months ago.

I have this urge to buy this lens even though I don't even own a DSLR… Curse you OzBargain!
I might pop down to my local JB tomorrow and see if they will honour this.

  • +1

Just got this for the same price at Doncaster Westfield. They were shocked! Haha

    • Congrat. Would you mind to share you receipt. My local JB won't honour receipt from other state.

  • Bought this lens about 2.5 years ago in Indonesia for about $90. JB has very good price.

  • Just got it this morning for $83 aswell from Wollongong JB HiFi!

  • JB in Fyshwick, Canberra honoured the deal today :) I called Civic JB up first and they refused to price match but Fyshwick said yes over the phone. I recommend you call ahead to save yourself from running around to different stores.

Thanks to mily for the great deal.

    • Yeah good point…I didn't bother because I was just around the corner from the Wollongong store (they had another 3 in stock). When I went there the salesperson had to find the manager, he asked how many I wanted and said ok (probably making sure I wasnt trying to buy a few to on-sell). If they said no I was just gonna go to Warrawong where the OP got his from!

  • Got browns plains to honour the deal today

    • Hey madturbo123,

Could you please post your receipt? I can get to the Browns Plains store.

      Thanks.

  • artarmon wont honour the deal, chatswood is "sold out" (however you want to interpret that

  • no price match in Melbourne city as usual :(

no success in parramatta (both stores) and merrylands

    • +1

Would you please post your receipt from Blacktown? I am about to buy one from this store.
      Thanks.

    • yea~~ please post your receipt from blacktown as i would like to get one too!!! thanks a lot!

      • +1

can you guys wait until Friday?
i'm currently away from home and will get back then

        • I already got on Monday, from JB in Rouse Hill. I bought a bag for the camera as well, it makes the lens as $100 and bag as $40. I think I can get the total price down to $130, but it will be a hard negotiation. I am happy with the price and the lends and bag. :)

Thank you anyway, but I think tw6688 may still need your receipt.

  • No price match in Epping, Broadmeadows vic :(
the best they can offer is 120

  • No price match at Erina NSW. They were pretty shocked. Said it was 30 dollars below cost. Take that as you will.

    • -1

I work at a JB and the salesperson was telling the truth. I came onto this site after having one of you guys come into my store and attempt to swindle me with the above receipt >:)

It was actually a bit over 30 dollars below cost. It certainly didn't help the guys case when I noticed the website link at the bottom of the page he printed which made it obvious this was a mass available receipt.

To those who managed to get it at $83, consider yourself very lucky. For those that have been denied, the salesperson did the right thing and you shouldn't feel hard done by. If you want cheap electronics, move to the USA. It isn't retailers that offer high prices (except harvey norman maybe), but the prices Australia is being charged to import.

As I said in a post just before in relation to this, we absolutely avoid selling ANYTHING under cost unless there are multiple items in the sale that put it back into the positive. When you haggle to the point of there being nothing in the sale, you're completely screwing the salesperson who needs to meet KPIs (key performance indicators) to A) keep his job, and B) make commission to complement the measly 17 dollars an hour wage. I weigh up every sale and think about whether it is worth giving the customer what they ask for and copping the flack from my manager, or just letting the entire sale walk.

  • heads up for the deal.. thumbs down for those stores that cant price match..
whats that competitors price checking slogan @ JB HIFI when there are those that cant even match their own store pricing?
"'ALWAYS' Cheapest prices [ we check prices daily thus prices in store can be even cheaper if we have been undercut.]".. thats crap….
there's a number of those that tore down their own slogan..

  • I have talked to the guy in Clive Anthony and they said the Cannon Instruction price is $119.

  • Penrith Westfield's is a go!!! $83 bargain!!!!

    Great deal!!

  • Anyone managed to get a price match in Brisbane? Anyone bought an extra that they don't want?

  • I've been to the 4 Sydney CBD stores but no one would price match

  • No match and terrible service from Steve the store manager @ Narre Warren JB. He initially came across as keen and helpful, referred me to a staff member but when they heard I was after a price match, he mumbled something about grey imports or something or other (even after showing him the uploaded receipt) and basically turned his back on me and walked away from me. I'm in the customer service industry myself and would never have done that and found it quite rude…

    • Forgot to say that he did not even bother to counter offer.

    • same here, as soon as you mentioned the word price match they all change face and become rude, jb should re-train their staff … i am happy to take a polite no, but not stupid attitude

    • Make that 3. And they will reject your price match and tell you that its a gray import upon hearing the price. Well its from a local jb store. I might be ignorant but I dont think u can buy a gray in store yet. Usually they send it directly to the buyer, and jb just acts as an intermediary. No counter offer. Some just said its a mistake (full stop). Bought mine online at the end. Not worth giving jb hifi my business on this one.

  • No luck around some of the other VIC stores - warrigal rd, chadstone, dandenong, even at doncaster where someone else managed to get a price match before… "we don't match internet receipts", "head office have told us not to honor this price as it is a scam" one store said it was $40 under cost. Another offered $129 when I asked for their best price.

  • -2

I work at JB HIFI and can guarantee you only salesmen that want to get their asses kicked will do this price.. And just because it was done for that price at one of our stores, we are not obliged to do it again. I saw one of these today and told the guy no way, it is approximately 35 dollars below cost price, so we have absolutely no inclination towards taking that sale.

My experience with customers is that they don't know about margins (admittedly they shouldn't know), and appear to expect retailers to sell at or below cost price. If we did this the stores would make no money, staff would get laid off and you wouldn't have a shop to go to anymore.

If anybody has any Qs they would like to ask in order to achieve better outcomes with electronic purchases (at JB or others), feel free to ask. Because seriously, if you come in expecting us to do ridiculous prices, we'll just say no because it isn't worth our time if we 1) don't make any GP (thus no commission) or 2) don't reach our KPI targets which results in unpleasant interactions with the store manager come performance evaluation.

My advice on purchases, find out EVERYTHING you want for the product you're buying. If you're buying an iPad or other such device, think about the accessories you intend to buy in the future and BUY THEM AT THE SAME TIME. We are VERY generous on discounting when there are multiple line sales (aka multiple items on the one docket), and you will save money in the long run.

    • If you sell one item at good price, people will come back to buy more. If you don't offer a good price or at least good customer service, people won't buy "multiple items on the one docket".

    • we know that other items are greatly discounted because they are heavily marked up, that explains the "VERY generous discounting". I don't see JB Hifi as the only store to make purchases from, especially with inadequate customer service, and STILL earning customer's commissions for that sort of service AND there is a high EBIT according to JB HiFi 2011 Annual report. so its insufficient to say that JB can't offer this price because its below cost price, it chose not to price match that and how long does it take to match a receipt but rather hitting individual salespersons target who might be having a high sales KPI while receiving a large amount of commission.
