  • Its an uncomfortable fit even with the right tips, especially after long period of use. Also gets sweaty being closed rubber.

    • Agreed.

But it’s more breathable than some brands, it’s just that you can’t adjust or take them off quickly to cool down. XM3 for instance, is a furnace after an hour due to their synthetic velour and foam padding.

And if they’re not snug against your head, the weight slips onto your ear instead of the headband.

Melbourne Kickstarter, they started out at $250 or so if you got in early.

Since 2016, they have a kind of cult reputation, and since then, they went retail in 2018, and subscription in 2019, with the nuraloops coming out around September this year due to COVID.

The selling point is the personally tuned music experience. And it’s a very attractive experience…

The reality is that you need to believe the hype to value the awkward and the obnoxious.

      Cult is about right.

Unfortunately they need to either up their technology game, or abandon the pretense of being hipster.

From a marketing POV, nura have made their decisions. But there’s too much competition. Especially in the budget they want to price a personal experience over wireless headphones. $500+ puts them up against better headphones. And they’re a solid 8/10 headphone. Though, they start as a 6-7/10 for the initial discomfort phase.

And they’re going to be doomed if Apple get into the market, since they will probably consume the available oxygen for Hipster Headphones if they release their fabled $500-$1500 Studio headphones.

While the nuraphones are beyond other headphone options in some ways, they have to compete with 2018-2020 model BT headphones like the QC35 and Bose NC700, XM3/XM4 and even massdrop panda’s, as well as a series of new Bluetooth portable Planar Magnetic headphones.

And, they can’t. I have 10+ different IEM/headphones, and while I value the Nuraphones, $300 is their sweet spot with the competition for travel/NC headphones.

They also have nuraloops, which are okay. 7/10, they do the job. 8/10 if I could put them in a pocket without tangling or in a charging cradle to store the custom-wires, etc. which will be hard to replace (been there, done that)

I would buy the AirPods Pro 9/10 times over the nuraloops, just because it’s easier to put them in a pocket. Something the Nura folks forgot about. Sound quality is near/about the same IME, but you get a fair amount of listening time. The downside is they don’t have decent flange tips so cleaning and fit is annoying/missing in action, and the pro’s fit better.

Their nura Black Friday sale price (for the headphone or loops earbud band) is hard to scale or value, as it’s incredibly hard to justify. They are not the best headphones. And they’re not the worst either.

The nuraphone IEM inserts are hard to accept. And you need to be in the headspace to relax or watch a movie, audiobook, etc so you can pace yourself with the initial discomfort. (It does rest and fatigue less after a few months of use)

At the price they command, even with the lease subscription model, it’s a technology mix that will be replicated. Badly (Creative SXFI, Sony 3D)

While there’s software you can use to EQ headphones to create a more neutral/monitor level sound (RoomEQ and a calibrated microphone) … the Nuraphones do a step beyond taking photo selfie’s of your ears or having a $200 microphone sample a room’s balance and sound output.

They process and create a psy-model or “personal EQ” using otoaccoustic modelling, based off a high frequency microphone inside the ear and measuring the vibration of the bones in the ear to model resonant structures of the ear canal.

The advantage is, it’s a very good, custom EQ. The downside is that it’s tied to the Nuraphone. Even if you download it, it could only sound the same, with the same inserts. So it’s not something you could test and download and apply to a home stereo or PC desktop/ DAC AMP dongle, etc. there’s also the fact that hearing changes pretty regularly so you would need to redo the profile to see if there’s changes.

IMO, $500 might be out of the scale for the potential audience since $300-$500 is the starting point of discounted premium Chinese and US headphones, and it can’t compete with the $500 to $900 competition if you have sensitive midrange, the drivers aren’t large enough to deliver the detail needed, and the insert has a weak crossover for the sub frequencies, which makes comparison harder for the nuraphones, not better.

At $300 -$390 it’s a good deal … if you can tolerate the months of wearing in. Unfortunately, it has the worst of both IEM and headphones, so you need to be shown how to wear them properly or it’s going to be obnoxiously painful to wear.

The key is to keep them high and tight, to put the weight on the band, not in/on your ear. Most people don’t tighten them enough and the band slips loose which moves the fulcrum of weight onto the ear, not the headband.

It’s also a sensation that only IEM owners know too well, ie finding that ideal fit to get the proper bass/treble, and having to spin, twist, nod, yawn, rock, pinch and run to get the ear seal back if you have to take them out to talk to other people, etc. while the inserts can be obnoxious, they can be

However, for flying and train travel, the passive isolation is obnoxiously good. Once the silicone and spring has fatigued, you can wear these for 2-3 hours, while most will start to pinch after 30-45 minutes.

As one of the early backers, I still use them when travelling, but it’s now limited by the 2015 technology. And the XM3/ AirPods Pro are better value, sometimes better technology.

That's a detaieeeeeeeeeeed explanation. Thank you. Will wait for better price

      • This is even better than my copypasta comment I dump in each nura thread. Thank you!

There is better value to be had at the price point.

  • These were the best fitting and best sounding headphones I’ve listened to music on. The Nuraloop in ears are also exceptional.

    • I guess U don't own many headphones. I have these and the nuraloops. They ain't the best sounding for music (even if it's subjective). Maybe the nuraloops for the price point. Nuraloops fit ain't exactly great (so fiddly and needs re-adjustment) Especially if you need to move abouts.

      • Ive used and owned many headphones and headsets for personal use and djing over the years. I’ve never had an issue with fitment of the Nuraloops. I’ve used them at home, gym, cycling and running and never had any discomfort or need for adjustment. They are a niche product I suppose.

  • these suck… I tried these on at melbourne central and was genuinely interested after all the instagram ad spamming. I was beyond underwhelmed and told the people that and it didnt even compete with some cheaper headphones plugged into an audio interface and they agreed and said it probably wasnt for someone using "music production" software or hardware lol

I think they sound pretty great and I don't regret buying them, but they aren't the be-all-end-all like their advertising sometimes suggests, and they're definitely not for everyone. I've had them for a couple of years and the build quality is fantastic. Still like new. In that time I've only had a handful of occasions where they got a bit too uncomfortable to use for longer periods but everyone is different.

  • Not for me. I found the before and after tuning demo to be an eq, but didn't sound better than any of my $100 cans (I have a few).
Fit is super important with these, perhaps it was the fit for me.

    I'll post it again…

These are gimmicky headphones that are not worth it at all. If they weren't at a premium price point, maybe (i'm talking $100-$150), but not for >$500 RRP. I got my b&o H9's for less than this!

I tried these at the QVB and they weren't that great. I walked away completely dissapointed…I'm more inclined to recommend the M1000XM4 or even QC35 to poeple before I recommend these.

If you're keen and not tried them, try them before you drop $300+ on them. I don't think they're worth it, even at 30% off.

    I did my profile
With the profile enabled they were really lacking in any sort of separation and there were no mids (worse than Bose).

Also, with the bass thing turned right down there was still way too much. It cut into the highs reducing their definition and there was significant clipping.

The source for the test was Tidal, my personal Spotify premium, and my personal FLAC library.

My daily headphones are B&O H9 for the office environment.

This is just my opinion, ymmv.

Thanks lasterato for constantly reminding and supporting this community :)

  • Had these for 7 months. Too damn bulky and uncomfortable. Ear canals will have swellings right after ten mins.

  • I got these for 360 a few months ago, not a bargain

these usually retail for $500 and on the app you can easily get an extra 20% off making it $400.

Good build quality but the synthetic rubber they use gets covered in oils.

Charger is proprietary and falls out half the time, plus if you want to connect to 3.5mm headphone you need to buy their expensive cable. Not to mention the loud beep when it starts charging.

Tap feature is cool but loud, loud to the point where other people can hear it. It's like a popping sound when you touch it. Wish there was a swipe for the volume control but you can customize up to four commands on the app which is nice.

If you take your nuraphones off to hear someone then they are quick to turn off with their "smart sensing" or what ever. Basically if the right ear piece isn't pushed in it'll start to turn off. then you have to wait for it to turn back on.

    Bass is stronk tho.

good customer service and packaging. They got rid of the gigantic pod case for a nice little travel pouch but they still don't fit in small pockets.

Imo they're gimmicky, with the personal sound equalizer feature and the dual speaker thing for the range.

Not worth the price but if you could get them for like 300 I'd give them a shot. pretty sure they have a good returns policy if you don't like them.

    • I believe you get the 3.5mm cable included now, though the current package 'only' includes a soft pouch type case rather than the sturdy (but incredibly bulky) hard case previously included. Honestly I'd take the swap.
