4 Stroke Lawnmower @ Big W for a Very Low $128

460

Could not believe it, a 4 stroke lawnmower with 3 years warranty for only $128 at Big W, had i seen this earlier I would have bought it. I just got my old victa serviced (new filter, oil and a tune up) cost me $125. Could have spent an extra $3 and get a new one from Big W, use it for 3 years, even if it broke in within those 3 years BIG W probably would have swapped it for a new one, if it broke after 3 years then no loss.

at 118CC could even use the motor for a go-kart!

Use and throw away if it breaks after warranty just like a Hyundai excel and those $30 printers from OW.

  • Any idea what brand the engine is? Getting parts (and repairs) for dodgy brand engines can be expensive..

Spending a bit extra for a Victa or B&S powered mower is worth it. Mines been going for the past 4 years without any issues - still starts first pull. And it was the cheapest one @ Bunnings, around the low $200 mark.

Comes with 3 year warranty so there'd be no need to get repairs done.

      • +2

        exactly.

even if it craps itself after 3 years, you just buy another one!

if you buy victa, you are spending triple this price…. not "a little bit extra" at all.

        • After a quick google;

          http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_148cc-4-stroke-s…

B&S engine, $229. Well worth the extra $100. Sometimes it's worth the extra money… Personally I like to be able to pull my mower out and have it start first time.

Feel free to use and abuse (or yell abuse at..) the $128 one though. :)

Also, warranty does not cover maintenance, or lack there-of. If it blows up in a couple months because you forgot to put oil in it, they won't replace it.

        • hmm thanks for that

        • İ have a $500+ victor that doesnt start fırst go

        • i remember reading somewhere that most petrol lawnmower problems are fuel related. i recommend you add fuel stabiliser to your fuel can each time you fill it up. it lets petrol sit for up to 1 or 2 years without going stale.

      • Comes with 3 year warranty so there'd be no need to get repairs done.

that's not entirely true, you will still need to change oil/plugs/filters/blades.

        • +4

          That's maintenance not repairs.

  • "cost me $125. Could have spent an extra $4 and get a new one from Big"

    $3 actually.

    • +5

sh1t I better fix that up

  • Should post what brand of motor? The kmart Sanli ones are a copied honda engine which tends to break down just after warrenty period :)

    • +3

3 year warrAnty on this mower. For $128 just get another in 3 years if it breaks.

    • Rubbish I've had a Sanli Powermulch for the past 3 years and it is better made and more durable than the big name brands.

  • Costed me $160 to get a genuine B&S 450 series engine from ebay then bolted that ontop of my existing deck (lawn mower base)

  • +6

4 stroke - the number of strokes this will cause you as its low quality components fail and your blood pressure and fustration increase before you chuck it.

    • i need a new one.. my however old victa is a POS that never catches the grass completely.. so annoying!

    • 4 stroke - the number of strokes this will cause you as its low quality components fail and your blood pressure and fustration increase before you chuck it.

You can always pass by this deal or get a bypass to stop that from happening.

62 of them sold out in an hour at big w Stafford.

  • +1

Mental at BigW Arndale SA. Never seen so many people with trolleys filled with mowers….One guy had 2. I recon there were around 40-50 in the many long lines to the very few checkouts that were open. 50 minutes to get through the checkout.

  • The neighbour bought one of these several months ago. You definitely get what you pay for with this one.

Having said that, I guess if you don't have a mower and can't afford a more expensive one, then this is probably better than nothing.

  • +ve for the excel comment.

Actually more interested in the 24 pack of (full size) coke cans for 13 bucks.

  • i bought a talon 4 stoke for same price about 4 years ago. still going strong.
if you look after them and change oil when you should, they should go great.

it's got 3yr warranty folks. if it craps itself within that time, they'll fix/replace it. if it lasts more than 3years, great too. win/win.

couldnt find any info online for this particular model, but there is a key start model for $400 here: http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/p/automatic-4-blade-4-stroke-k…

makes the OP's posted deal look even better!

  • Bought one of these the first time they came on sale. Put it together and it started first pull.
It is a fairly small mower with a plastic base. However, if you have a fairly small yard and don't let the grass grow too long, this would be ideal. Certainly better than any electric alternative.

    • +1

plastic base? they sure don't make mowers like they used to :) watch out for those stones …

    • The catalogue states it is a steel base not plastic.

  • i've got an old victa commando 160cc. actually i've got a couple, from people that put them out on the kerbside after they've gummed up the carby or something.

    • I picked up a Victa off the kerbside about 12 years ago, still going strong.

If/when this ever blows up, I will probably buy a cheapie 4 stroke with a Briggs engine.

  • Fail to get one! Any other good bargain?

  • +1

Remember that they are probably made in China, unlike the Australian made Victa mowers. Personally I think it's worth spending a bit more for a reliable mower rather than taking part in the frustrations of a disposable culture.

    • +1

unlike the Australian made Victa mowers

      Are they still Australian made?

      They certainly aren't Australian owned….

      • I checked the Victa website, they said that virtually all mowers are still made in Australia.

The death of the Australian manufacturing industry is a huge detriment to everyone. I have to wish that Australia were more into protectionism rather than almost completely getting rid of manufacturing and replacing it with crappy cheap imports.

  • Whats the bet that the rotors on this mower are locked into place.. So if you managed to hit something big, either that something big will break or the motor will.. i'm betting it'll be the motor.

  • The economics of stuff like this baffle me. How do they do it? Just the freight alone would be a fair chunk of $128- if an Australian freight company sent it back to China for you they'd charge you $1,000. I priced the freight of a mower from melbourne to the mid north coast of nsw today- $100.

    • When I was in Vietnam last year I saw Chinese made scooters selling for less than $400, I briefly considered buying one and shipping it back but the shipping cost would be twice as much as the scooter.

    • 20,000 mowers @ 128, since they're shipping so many they probably have a relationship with the freight company so they get it for nothing (probably works out to $10 each, these would also be transported via ship, not air). Big W would take maybe 10-20% profit at this price, original company would probably be the same ($12 - $25), cost to build them and other expenses will take up the rest.

      • The true cost is paid by the environment.

  • "Whats the bet that the rotors on this mower are locked into place"

1 Is there a way to tell by looking at the specs or do you need to ask?

2 Why would you build a mower that way?

      1. If they have one on display, check under it. Otherwise, no way to know.
      2. Welding a piece together = cheaper than bolting it in place. Cost cutting at its best! Plus, having to replace the lot = more dollars from parts.
  • lol pretty much instasoldout in syd

  • A few years ago I went to buy a cheap lawnmower from bunnings, and was promptly told by staff not to buy it.. The rotors are locked into place and therefore if you hit something, goodbye lawnmower. Bunnings will always sell items at various price points regardless of the quality. It won't be Bunnings fault when you run over something and break it, and they won't cough up on warranty when you do.

The dead giveaway (for me) is the cloth catcher that its cheap rubbish designed purely to sell rather than be a long lasting product.

Has anyone ever seen those $2 AA/AAA batteries you can buy in packs of 48.. again, those things are designed to sell, and are absolutely useless as a battery. Personally, i think products like those should be banned as they're unnecessary landfill and have no practical use whatsoever, other than driving a slim profit.

    • people want more choice not less, even if that means including the 'crap landfill'! if you save a buck now and don't hit something or the problem is covered by warranty, you're doing well!

  • was at BigW first thing in the morning, but was told it was out of stock straight away, and out of stock in all victorian stores with no chance of ordering any more in.

    • sounds like shonky advertising, if they are going to be advertising something cheap then it is reasonable to expect they should have sufficient stock to cover the demand. otherwise it just becomes bait advertising.

  • I have one of those cheap n nasty 2 stroke whipper snippers from Bunnings…. (GMC I reckon), cost around $80 from memory

Has had no maintenance, poorly stored, etc etc…. I really bought it as 'disposable' (living in rental at the time, no real lawn)

yet year after year, much to my amazement, the thing just springs back to life and works…… must have had it for 6 years at least.

some of this cheap junk can actually be ok…… despite the odds

    • Bought a cheap whipper snipper from Kmart (Gardeners Choice).

It was awful to use and run and I literally pulled it to pieces trying to start it one day, about 3-4 months new.

Bought a Ryobi for about 50% more and am 100% happier.

Was at BigW Rockdale at 8.30 and all sold out. Quite a few annoyed customers.

  • ARGH!!!

I just went to Bunnings this morning and bought an electric mower for $134!! :(

I got it at like 10 this morning, so this deal was posted just after I got back and put the damn thing together…

But then again, I did want to get an electric, saves some costs, but its a hassle to use with the cord and it is really underpowered… Wish this deal came out a little earlier.. :'(

    • I have an electric mower too and went to get this. All sold out at 8.30 so u didn't miss a thing.

  • Good for the hot days in summer, cut up the dry grass to prevent fires.

  • +3

Bought one this morning, put it together and started 1st time.

    $128 with a 3 year warranty from a major Australian retailer… why wouldn't you ??

The 2 blades are free moving on a cross bar arrangement.

You get what you pay for is spot on. But for the likes of my father-in-law who has about 60m2 of lawn it is perfect.

I can only assume BigW is absorbing some cost in the name of publicity and customer attraction. me thinks they can afford it.

Now where is that torch, one feels like mowing !!!

    :-)

  • FYI, these cheap mowers wont even last the warnty period if used more then once a month.

They are good for about 50 uses then the thing starts to play up. ( motor doesnt start, frame cracks, wheels fall off ext.)

Its the way they are designed not to last so you buy a replacement in 1-2 years

The older mowers from the 70, 80's and 90's would last about 10 years+ and are good for over 500 use's befor they start to show any problems.

But you get what you pay for in the end. :) i do like my $12 toasters and $12 Cettles for the home even though they only last a year.

  • These cheapies are a mixed bag, but providing that they are backed up with a decent warranty, it does not really matter (other than the inconvenience of transporting a grubby lawnmower back to the shops). In any case it beats dealing with the airline companies [insert other cheap-ass justification here].

I just came back from Bigw and they said all sold out.

Can this be reported to ACCC for shonky advertising ?

    • +1

      is this a serious comment?

      • +1

I think Big W had adequate stock. Wasn't it also just a one day sale (and the day was over as of closing time Saturday)?

Reminds me of a German quote: "He who comes late, gets what is left".

        • +1

Big W had more than enough stock, we were going to by one ourselves when the store opened, but asked ourselves why we needed it

  • +1 in the hope that one person in my street without a mower will buy one and mow there #%*^ lawn.
