What's your solution? Covid has basically destroyed the business model carriers were used to along with a lot of other businesses. Demand will be greatly reduced for the next few years. Job keeper will not last forever. I'm honestly interested in your solution.

      • why neg magb3 ? He is merely stating the facts and not wrong, if you don't like the facts it doesn't mean it is not a fact ??!!

Reduced demand would result in less jobs, so you could expect some of the existing workforce to be made redundant if those paid millions of dollars a year to run Qantas believe the long-term trends will only support a smaller workforce. This however is the wholesale removal of almost the entire ground-handling workforce to be replaced by cheaper labour hire staff on poorer conditions.

Actions like this by major corporations to remove full time ongoing stable employment and replace them with labour hire contracted unstable employment impacts us all. I am not personally impacted by this decision, and I don't know anyone who is. I do however have concerns that we seem accepting of this sort of behaviour, as this will have major impacts on employees everywhere. If there is no impact to brand reputation and goodwill, expect more of these so called COVID measures to impact more and more of us.

See, this is the kind of discussion needed. Thanks. Not just the "systems farmed!!!" comments.

Ready to have your mind blown? I actually didn't vote on his/her post at all until now and to prove you wrong I gave it an up vote. Scary hey. I didn't neg at all yet you assumed I did.

tessel no one cares if you neg (or not), that care factor is all in your head :)

    • not ideal but hey, employer and employee have maintained the employment relationship for as long as possible with JobKeeper assistance, i think it's reasonable to expect there to be many more redundancies and much earlier in the year if not for the assistance

This has been on the Qantas wish list for years. COVID is a convenient time to roll this out with minimal impact to brand image, as evidenced here in this thread plenty of people think this is all just a big unavoidable thing that poor old Qantas was forced into.

        • This has been on the Qantas wish list for years

          totally agree with this

i do wonder whether they had clauses around retention of localised maintenance and support as part of privatising the airline?

Cool, I need a flight to maintain my status for another year (although, its of dubious value because I cannot imagine actually benefitting from that status in the nexy few years)
