[VIC] 30% Off-Peak (between 9.30am & 4pm or after 7pm on Weekdays) Myki Money Fare Discount on Public Transport @ PTV

Hi OZB Family, came across this on the news, good for return to office folks in Melbourne.

Public transport fares outside of peak times will be discounted from Sunday 31 January 2021, encouraging metropolitan passengers to choose to travel during the quieter periods of the day.

The 30 per cent discount will be available for three months for passengers using myki Money to pay for their trips between 9.30am and 4pm or after 7pm on weekdays.

Passengers must touch on and off on metropolitan trains, trams and buses in order to receive the automatic discount.

This discount is only valid for myki Money and for travel on weekdays within Zone 1 and Zone 1+2. It will not apply to travel that is already discounted, including travelling wholly within Zone 2, on the weekend or public holidays.

This metropolitan discount is in line with a 30 per cent off-peak discount that is already available on the V/Line regional train network.

    Not sure if this is a deal or not, but I support promoting it from a public health and network management perspective. Always good to get people to spread out their journeys, so we can enjoy less crowding/congestion :)

      To be fair, the stated intention of the 'off peak' fare is to spread the number of people travelling across longer hours, where it is possible for those travellers to do so.
      If the peak-hour(s) were discounted, there is no incentive to change behaviours.

        True that mate. My workplace covid safe return to office plan includes very flexible work options, staggered start and finish times across and within teams/ departments.

        With only small percentage of usual workplace capacity allowed back in the buildings at any given point of time, such cost saving initiatives will further support the big picture cause.

              @Merlict: My question was related to this 30% discount for off-peak. Perhaps you would be better off with that fare (if you could travel within those restrictions) rather than the pass?

              • @GG57: The pass is about $6.50 per day so you could save some using this yeah.

    • Well this is also the time that public transport is most busy and costs the most to run (more services = more trains and drivers needed). So of course it should be most expensive. This is an incentive to get workplaces to move staff hours around the peak. Most people working 9-5 have an office job that easily pays the $9 per day it costs.

    But weekend/public holiday daily fare is $6.50

      There are different travel volumes and journeys on weekends compared to weekdays. This discount is designed to encourage passengers to travel at times when the network is quieter, which is only really an issue on Weekdays.

      • I agree. There are very few people traveling on Sundays and public holidays, much less than weekday off peak.
        (Excluding footy in and out of course)
        It makes no sense to me when public holiday fare is higher.

      You have applied the 30% discount to the 2020 fares. Do you know that those will be the 2021 fares?

      Not sure if you know this but NYE fireworks got cancelled in Melbourne this year. Check this article. Much lesser crowd expected as a result.

      Some will go in for early bird and go home before 4, others will come in later and leave after 6.

      Take it easy mate. Huge number of offices including kind have changed their usual hours and added flexible hours as a new normal.

      Numerous people I personally know who commute to CBD are being encouraged to either start & finish early or late to ensure lesser public transport crowding.

  • are trains socially distanced? i.e. 1 person per 3 seats? Back when I took the train every morning it was packed like sardines, so I have no idea how they'd have enough trains to run socially distanced, unless most people are working from home now.

      People been working from home since March and it's only just this week that 25% are allowed to start going back to the city / office

      • only those who can work from home. A ton of people can't due to the nature of their job.

        Even during lockdown those people weren't banned from working unless their place of employment was forced to shut down (gyms, movie theaters, department stores, etc). Some people's jobs depend on equipment and infrastructure not available at home.

    Assuming they don't get rid of Early Bird, you can travel in to touch off prior to 7:15 for free, and then go home prior to 4pm and save some cash. Or Work from home and spend nothing :)

    Assuming there are trains running during this times and no one need to jump from train to train at Flinders, because of cancelations.

  • Based on current myki fares, the 30% discount works out to be the same cost as a pass (on a daily rate)

    I'd like to return to the office a few days a week but the time limitation means I'd only take advantage of one-way off peak, so might make more sense to use the pass and cancel as necessary and annoying as it is hmm

    I do like the idea of an incentive to get people away from peak hours, however some workplaces aren't that flexible (my own included)

    I travelled into the CBD by train all through Covid. I lost count of the number of times I was the only person in a carriage. It's certainly busier now than it was then. Generally people spread out as much as possible in a carriage, I'm yet to experience a real sardine carriage like the old days (and I just don't think it's going to happen, given the low number of people who are returning to work).

    I work for a large corporate in the CBD and so far the numbers returning are very low. Most of the people I speak to, particularly those who have a long commute, have no plan to return unless they really, really need to. Once you realise you don't need to spend two hours a day on a train, why would you? Okay maybe once a week or something but even then many won't do it.

    This is a fundamental change in the way companies operate and unless your job requires you to be physically on site, things will never be the same again.

    • Local hubs are going to boom. Plenty of high-rises planned throughout Footscray, Moonee Ponds, Box Hill, Ringwood, Glen Waverley, Springvale, etc. Maybe that tech city in Werribee will now happen too.

      Perhaps corporations will set up local hubs too, smaller offices spread out across the city. Then they can downsize their pricey CBD office space.

        Great in theory, wishful thinking, but sadly the government won't let its CBD centralisation model fail. There will be a gradual change however, more off-city business hubs will eventuate, but give it 2 years, things will start to normalise again and the rush towards CBD isn't likely going away any time soon. Both models can co-exist, so why not.
