Xiaomi Black Shark 3 Pro 5G 256GB 7.1" Phone $1199 (Normally $1999) @ JB Hi-Fi

772

It's a beast of a phone. It's normally $1,999, often on sale for around $1,600. I think $1,199 is the cheapest I've seen. Nice big battery, 12 gigs of RAM, fast processor/GPU, lovely display. Pop-up gaming triggers seal the deal for gaming but I use mine mostly for office productivity. Has Band 28 but no NFC unfortunately.

Bonus Offer!
Purchase the Xiaomi Blackshark 3 Pro 5G 256GB handset and receive a bonus accessories pack valued at $498!
Accessories pack includes:
Black Shark Bluetooth Earphones 2
Black Shark FunCooler Pro
Black Shark Quick Charge Power Bank
Black Shark Audio/Quick Charge 2-in-1 Adapter

I "downgraded" from the Huawei Mate 20X - which was 7.2". Sometimes you've gotta make sacrifices in the name of Band 28 (which the Huawei didn't have)

      • How's the camera of this compared to the 20x? Thoughts on this phone?

Looking to replace my mate 20x aswell.

Waiting for the Chinese spying comments 🤣 Happy with my Poco F2 and got the wife a Mi10T at half the price of this.

If money was no option would get this. Good deal though.

Waiting for the Chinese spying comments

      It's not a Huawei :)

      • +10

It doesn't seem Huawei is the only one gets such comments……

        • +1

Anything "Chinese sounding" gets these comments. Doesn't happen to non-Chinese sounding Chinese brands like Oppo, Realme etc.. "Black Shark" sounds alright as long as you don't mention the name "Xiaomi".

Especially when the same people here think that the CCP runs everything in China and every brand / model is spying on you but have no problems with brands that doesn't sound Chinese.

Not racially charged is it? lol.

          • +36

@bchliu: It’s not racist, it’s just fact. All countries do it. China is the biggest ‘threat’ to the west currently. Those are just the facts.

              • +3

@phoenixpan: There were multiple reports on this since last many years, and different countries over time have put out warnings against using Huawei/ZTE phones for critical staff like military etc

                eg: https://www.cyberscoop.com/android-malware-china-huawei-zte-…

                • -3

                  @bobz79: I didn't downvote - no need.

"These packets contained user’s call logs, text messages, contact lists, GPS location and other data." That sounds like what Google takes from me…

I personally didn't see any persuasive pieces of evidence related to this issue, most of them trying to imply relationships between things, like a conspiracy. For example, when Australia kicks Huawei out of its 5G network, it didn't provide any technical report. So all these sayings sound more like excuses for Protectionism to me.

                  • +5

@phoenixpan: I have a problem with supporting Huawei just for their blatant intellectual theft. Which China Huawei stores resemble the exact same as Apple store. With their Huawei mate book and mate book pro. The work and development that went into these projects to have it ripped of with minor adjustments doesn't fly well with me.

Search for the China Huawei stores especially Huawei shanghai store. Total rip off.

This is not to say all companies are plagiarised. Look at DJI company. Total innovation and I'd happily support.

Their connection to politics a story for another day.

                    • +8

@aerona: How about Samsung and their Samsung Galaxy Store? The Koreans were the first to copy Apple. Everyone followed suit after that.

                    • +4

@aerona: I walk into David Jones and wow. They're a department store and it resembles Myer's store! Intellectual property theft there. Google some pics of DJs and Myers and they look the same because they're selling the same stuff?

That's "Total rip off" man.. Same goes between Harvey Norman Stores and The Good Guys.

                • -2

@bobz79: Then why didnt some countries like Germany ban it? Cause they arent Trump's lapdog.

                • -1

@bobz79: The original allegations were made by Kryptowire according to your article. Here's a bit of info about them:
                  https://www.kryptowire.com/team/

"Kryptowire was jumpstarted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS S&T). We provide automated military-grade software assurance and compliance testing technologies to private and public sector organizations. We believe everyone deserves the highest level of security and privacy possible."

Wow.. In who's interest do they make these claims? American Government currently running an Anti-China Campaign in every aspect because of Trump and his economical cold war? For one article that the American Government produces, there's plenty of others that are more neutral that claim there ISN'T.

                  • @bchliu: "American Government currently running an Anti-China Campaign in every aspect because of Trump and his economical cold war"
                    - the above report is from 2016, even before Trump became president :-)

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: No one likes being called out as a racist. Sure.. just put every threat on China because they're easy target for western propaganda.

              • @bchliu: why? because we're just gums on the their boots and the fact that CCP's running concentration camp for millions? I can't see why I should buy their product knowing the profit will just empower that regime.

CCP put it to law that every companies there will have to co-op with their security agencies btw - Xiaomi isn't an exception.

            • +2

            @bchliu:

Especially when the same people here think that the CCP runs everything in China

if not CCP, who runs everything in China ? my point is better to be safe than sorry

            • @DSCRAC: China is more capitalistic than even a lot of Western countries these days. Not every organisation belongs to the CCP and most are owned by internal and foreign investment in same way as Australia or US. Technically, China is only "Communist" in name. Economically they are capitalistic and politically they are a single ruling party (unfortunately).

              • +1

@bchliu: "Technically, China is only "Communist" in name" - true, rest of the world calls it dictatorship, slavery etc :-)

Hence no one trusts China and it is considered a threat to the rest of the world!

              • +2

                @bchliu: Your comments are terrifying.

There is alot wrong with these statements. China lacks free trade. There has been a decrease in permanent residence year on year.
Buying an investment in China is almost impossible for a foreigner. Getting a permanent resident is not possible. Even getting married to a Chinese citizen won't grant you citizenship now.

I won't go off topic and talk about the atrocities. But it's amazing to see statements like it's just western propaganda from people. When the points above clearly defeats your arguments. You nitpick my intellectual property claim above with Myer and David Jones? But avoid mate book and mate book pro?

Huawei has been sued by many companies. Tmobile, Cisco, Motorola solution. Everyone knows in China. The rule of law Is against foreign entities. How does iPhone even lose a trademark court case to a bag company named IPHONE

I think everywhere in the world you are a minority, that these comments will continue to always exist. Its getting better though. China and the world included.

              • @aerona: No victim card here. Just reality since we're called "CCP Shills", it's no different.

            • @bchliu: Go Google what shill means bud.

Think you are confused in your defensive mania

        • saw some threads talked about stealing data hehe. Wondering how many people quit using facebook after the scandal?

The difference is that Google don't hide the fact that they collect data and telemetry from you.

still criminal, just different way how they steal information from you.

          • @dts88: Don't use google services then.

If you use an android phone, Google Chrome, Windows 10, gmail, or anything of the sort, then there's no use sooking up about being spied on. You're just shooting yourself in the foot.

      • Yeah, although a life without Huawei is a lot easier to do than a life without Google.

Using Android, YouTube, Gmail, Google Meets/Drive/Docs.. not all of these optionally. To completely free myself of Google I'd have to both cease studying and quit my job.

Wow @ omitting NFC for a phone with an RRP close to $2,000.
It also lacks an IP certification
And it doesn't seem to properly support Netflix HD or HDR.

Apparently gamers prefer low-res Netflix movies, don't go out in the rain, and don't tap-to-pay?

    • +2

That's weird - the phone supports HDR and widevine L3, but yep, in the Netflix diagnostics, it's at SD and without HDR. Not sure what the deal is there. (Having said that, I don't watch Netflix on my phone anyway, which is why I hadn't noticed before now)

      • +1

Here's the link to support that the display is capable of HDR:
        https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-Black-Shark-3-Pro-Smart…

        • +3

Yep, should be capable, but it seems as though there may be issues with the hardware certification, hence the problems various people are facing.

but yep, in the Netflix diagnostics, it's at SD and without HDR

BTW, thanks for confirming the Netflix issue is still a thing that hasn't been rectified.

      • the phone supports HDR and widevine L3

I was watching the youtube video below of the global version of this phone and not the tencent version and it clearly shows widevine L1. Though the reviewer did not test netflix.

        https://youtu.be/Hd4DZblaFm4?t=6m8s

        • nevermind. Cmaz confirmed. Eventhough international version has google widevine L1. hd netflix still not supported.

    • +2

Don't watch movies on my phone (does anyone actually do that??) and don't use my water-resistant phones in the rain, no NFC is close to a dealbreaker but for the rest of the specs I could make do. I'd be all over this thing if I didn't just get a new phone last week.

      • +4

Don't watch movies on my phone (does anyone actually do that??)

I am genuinely surprised you don't know of anyone who watches movies on their phone.
So many people I know watch movies/series/etc. on their phones e.g. when commuting/travelling.

        • +2

I don't know anyone who does, and when I was travelling I'd use my tablet to watch movies.

Most my friends would read a book. I spose it may be different these days in larger cities, Sydney, London etc

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: I see quite a it of it on public transport. People watching various shit on their phones. TV series, anime etc.

    • +9

No NFC is like a hugggee black flag

      • Especially on a phone that's near 2k when you can get it on phone for a couple of hundred

        • yup, no NFC = no cardless payments = no myki / opal travel in vic/syd = def no in melb/syd. too bad, would have bought it if it had NFC

  • +3

Remember when tablets were 7"? Imagine putting this to the side of your head, especially if you have a tiny head.

    • +2

7 inch tablets have a lot thicker bezels though 😂

Remember when people were complaining about how big 5 inch phones were?

      • +4

        "Were complaining"?

I still am. 5" is as big as a phone should be.. One handed goodness where you can still reach the full extent of the screen with your thumb.

Bigger than that.. Isn't primarily a phone. It's primarily a media screen.

        • +1

I hope you like the limited options that presents you!
The problem is screen to body ratio.

          • @pennypincher98: Yeah there are so few options I'm stuck with a clunky 6". I decided audio quality and price were my next most important considerations and got a v30+

            • @justtoreply: Not sure when you bought this but 3 years ago when released 6" was considered "big" not "standard", but Pixel 3/4a are much more pocketable?
As for your edited message above, I'm not sure what you mean by "phone". I do more texts, I don't take a lot of calls, and if I do my arms can lift a 180g object for a few minutes.

              • +1

@pennypincher98: By phone I mean functions other than movies and games. Where I could reasonably want to touch the top left corner with my thumb whilst securely holding the phone one handed.

Once you go to movies or games you're holding in landscape with two hands and I get that bigger is better.

To get to the top left at even 6 inches, one handed, theres a lot of shuffling and thus propensity to drop the phone. It's rare but frankly the phone should be sized so this never happens (ok.. Ppl with small hands might lose out).

As a non gamer or video watcher I'd appreciate more high end, small phones. We're talking nfc and good camera.

On the upside I acknowledge UI's have improved to be less reliant on getting to the top left.

            • +1

@justtoreply: I feel ya! I'm still running my X Compact!
Not holding my breath for any affordable modern "compact" phones anymore.

No NFC for a $2k phone in 2020?

      • +17

I wonder if they realise they are selling it in Australia where NFC is a "thing" ;-)

      • I haven't carried a wallet for 18 months or so .

        Congrats?

      • +1

Using nfc for Google pay now. It's got potential (other than Google failing to make a useful Google pay app that shows card balances)

I wouldn't have a phone without it. I'd miss bargains. Like the current latitude pay offer saves me $400 this December.

  • +7

How are those accessories valued at $498?!

    • LOL @ $124.50c a piece for the 4 items.

    • Yeah I have the accessory pack and they're a bit naff. The one useful accessory - the game pad - isn't even included.

      • +2

It's still a huge reduction on RRP, with some bonus extras, and great if you are happy with it.

  • all that tech and…

    Manufacturer's warranty 1 Year

lesse how often you return this thing for faults

    • +1

Doesn't matter if they say 1 year, it has 2 years warranty.

    • +1

Two years easy probably three years under ACL.

      • +4

Good luck getting JB to honour ACL. I had them refuse to fix a $500 blender that was barely out of a 12 month warranty. I ended up having to go to the Office of Fair Trading to get them to follow the law, and that took months.

I wish the ACCC would do actually do its job and prosecute retailers that blatantly disregard consumer law.

        • +9

I wish the ACCC would release guidance on price vs warranty for different product types. And make that guidance based on RRP (not price paid) to crack down on BS RRP nonsense whilst they're at it.

I also wish they'd crucify ebay for creating a system where sellers need to price jack by 15% on a 20% sale (i.e. ebay doesn't pay the discount in full)

      • JB will ask you contact phone company directly or they can do post for you but you pay fees. That's my own experience.

        • Bollocks… unless it's out of warranty why should they foot the bill for postage

          • @solidussnake: 2 years warranty for phone, I went to store I think at 13 or 14 months time, told me they only handle within 1 year or I pay postage fee, an Nexus phone.

Man, that's almost twice the battery size of iphone 12 pro. one could not have to charge for few days.

    • Talking about battery, ROG 2/3 come with 6,000mAh battery

  • I want Xiaomi 10 Ultra…

  • Wait, what? Isn't grey import for these for like 1.2k? I remember eyeing for this before I got my v50.

  • +7

FYI you can still buy the ASUS ROG Phone III for $779.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/575119

It has similar specs, with an even bigger battery (6000mah), NFC and a crazy-fast 144hz AMOLED display but without the extra gamer accessories (active cooler fan) hence the cheaper price.

the biggest downside though it's that it is the Tencent edition that's been flashed with a international ROM so there are some caveats associated with it and you should only buy it if you're somewhat tech savvy (not for noobs). Discussed in the previous deal.

that said Snapdragon 888 is probably going to just stomp the Snapdragon 865 chipset when it comes out

  • +11

Guys, do not buy this as it has serious compability issue with Google.

The phone uses "JoyUI" and it has tremendous problem with google. Eventually you cannot use google map, gmail and android auto etc.

It had no problem with google until they updated JoyUI 11. Myself is on Black Shark Halo.
