Apple 18W USB-C Power Adaptor $25 (Was $49) @ JB Hi-Fi

181

Since Apple has decided to reduce carbon emissions and avoid mining & use of precious materials by not supplying an adaptor, I think this is a decent deal for a 18W adaptor if you plan to buy one.

Enjoy!

  • I recently got the 20w for 23.7 pricematch @Officeworks.
Not sure why 20w is priced lower than 18w.

@OzzyBrak: Wow.. I remember that, because I paid it!

          • +2

@OzzyBrak: True force touch forgot that one. I liked touch id but they would argue that touch id was replaced with the face id module.
3.5mm aux port was to get waterproof working. (Samsung had no ends of trouble with 3.5mm ports and water proofing).

lol what?! Apple has been almost removing more than they have introduced in consecutive years

@ExtraSalt: Ok a few things that someone mentioned above and each one had a reason or was replaced by a newer feature. Are you thinking that every piece of technolgy needs to be left in when newer tech gets added. Do we need to have a rotary dialer on the front too ?

Yeah, encourage Apple to not supply a charger with their devices. F Apple.

    • I personally prefer this. All the previous phones would supply crappy 5W chargers. I’ve thrown so many of these out already, adds up when you have multiple family members with phones…

      • +4

I never understand this kind of statement.
They used to provide crappy charger and people are happy.
Now the phone actually need a good charger, they don't supply it and you are happier?

        • -1

Nobody was ever happy with a 5w charger…

@Magical Sound Shower: 5W = great overnight trickle charge

I would like to turn off fast charging overnight! All it does is degrade the battery for no benefit!

            • +1

@justtoreply: Apple introduced Optimised Battery Charging in iOS 13 specifically to address this issue.

With iOS 13 and later, Optimised Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging routine so that Optimised Battery Charging only activates when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged.

              • +1

@Member 0230: Yeah that's cool. I'd like more control. What I want is trickle charge unless I hit a prompt that comes up when I plug in that asks if I want fast charge. Or to have self-defined preset times. Apples way is an improvement but I don't want to fast charge to 80% after a certain time at night - ever.

                • @justtoreply: Hmm… I was curious about that — whether they fast charge to 80% and then wait til your typical wake times before upping to 100%. Do you know if this is actually what happens?

As a multi-year eneloop user with a smart charger, I appreciate the value of good charging hygiene to preserve battery life.

                  • +1

                    @Member 0230: I was only interpreting what you quoted. I haven't verified.

                    • @justtoreply: Right, I think it's worth finding out : ) May have to borrow someone's 18W charger overnight.

                      I have a feeling you're right though.

If youre throwing out perfectly working goods into the bin youre part of the problem. Give them away to the needy like to charity if you dont want it because they, apple et al, just pocket the savings when they remove stuff so youre not saving money, youre paying more when you do need the charger or adaptor.

In my case I recently I bought a whole bunch of wireless cameras which didnt come with a power adaptor so all my old phone chargers came in handy saving me $10 a piece and theyre aust approved.

When I got a 3dsxl it actually cost an extra $20 because it didnt come with a charger and has a proprietary plug.

        • Electronics aren't taken by a lot of charities.

          • @justtoreply: Yea true. Have to check first. Many bins wont take high value stuff because they dont want them being a thief's target but some shops still will.

            • @Lost-Sons of dallas: That's fair enough.

Sadly I've noticed bins get done over with low value stuff. Our friends live across a park with a clothing bin. It gets raided. Then they do over a couple houses whilst they're there. They are in a middle-ground area (not totally rough, but certainly has some issues - I should know as I used to live there too)

      • I mean, they could have supplied the 20w USB-C charger instead of a 5W one? It didn't have to be between 5W or nothing.

Never mind that most people upgrading from an iPhone wouldn't have had a device where they previously received a USB-C adapter, which makes the demand for an adapter quite high.

      • +2

The argument should be that they should put the 18w or 20w in the new ones. Their excuse for not including a charger is because everyone has a charger in their home; the irony is they are now supplying a usb c to lighting cable which would not fit the 5w charger that everyone supposedly has

    • +2

My hat is off to Apple frankly /s They’ve managed to convince millions of their consumers that their decision to not supply, a necessary element of their product is a win-win for consumers. That’s impressive. Considering that they’re just a company, who like any other company is ultimately going to do whatever makes them the most money.

    • +3

I'd support Apple if they have supplied a USB-A - Lightning cable, as that is what most iPhone users have been using. However they included the USB-C cable instead, thus forcing people to buy chargers separately. This was a deliberate strategy to nickel and dime their customers under the guise of environmental footprint.

As someone who sells their iPhones after every upgrade, I have to sell my iPhone as whole, that means I will need to buy a charger regardless thus making my environmental footprint indifferent.

      • USB A has been superseded. Doesn't make sense to use that connector anymore, especially considering a lot of new laptops don't have them - including macbooks.

Also USB-PD requires USB-C, so you'd have to settle for slower charging if Apple did use that outdated connector.

        • I agree. So it would make sense to include a USB C charger for the iPhone 12. Then remove it in the next revision once everyone already had a set. However they did a half baked job and not everyone will be convinced Apple did this for the environmental footprint as they claimed.

these are out of date - get the 20w, way better deal

Just saying, when I bought an iPhone 12 from JB HI FI under the Telstra Deal where you cancel immediately, I negotiated to have it thrown in. So if anyone is doing it before you buy the phone. Just negotiate.

There is more than just power output involved with these adapters , there are different power profiles that enable charging in different scenarios.

    Stick to the newer chargers

    • May I ask which one is newer? 18w or 20w?

      • +1

        20w is the current one.

    • Yeah correct I wish they would provide more clarity around this though. Apple generally have a standard and then stick with it, except with USB-C it’s all over the shop and they don’t really make it clear.

  • The 20w is $29 at JB…buy 2 (ie. Spend over $50), and get $10 cashback (targeted CBA credit card offer)…

Who even uses these. Power adaptors are out of date.

    • What alternative is there?

      • -8

In built wall chargers, Laptops or other electrical appliances with ports, wireless charging. Battery packs.

        • +5

I've never seen a USB-PD wall outlet. I'd be surprised if they exist with Australian sockets yet. And wireless chargers still need to be connected to a power source. Also I wouldn't wear down my laptop's battery by charging a device from it regularly..

i guess if you enjoy slow charge speeds

You are lucky the actual product is inside the packaging.
