Well here's a device that has no business existing.

    • +3

At least IngSoc gave you the telescreen for free

  • +3

    google nest hub ftw

  • +13

    Facebook account needed to use.

    Hard pass

  • Anyone know if I can use that to do a normal whatsapp voice call?

    • +1

Yes you can, but according to reviews your phone must be nearby.
Apparently it needs to piggy back off phone when doing WhatsApp call because WhatsApp encryption yada yada.

Also you will be missing some features if you set up the device with only WhatsApp account. There are only 2 options, you MUST set it up with either Facebook or WhatsApp account, and only with Facebook account do you get all the features of Portal.

  • +1

Errrr is this the same as that device they talked about on social dilemma? Maybe not but I’m trying my hardest staying away from anything facebook.

  • +1

    Yeah nah

  • +8

Will Zuckerberg watch me sleep? (I want him to)

    • Or you could use Facebook Live to live-stream yourself 24/7 so everyone can watch you sleep.

  • +2

You have to pay to get your data stolen? big NO!!!!

    • Just like all the other home devices people are snapping up.

  • weird. i didn't expect this to pop up..
but I wonder if it would be a good addition for my mothers home - an easy way for her to keep in touch with me as I live abroad.

    • Please read the deal description including links.

I think for those who understand & are ok with this, it will be just like any other video call assistant device (Google / Amazon etc).

  • +2

    FB is not trustworthy.

  • +5

Interesting Portal Mini is posted on ozbargain at half price (50% off) and gets barely any votes, but Sony PS5 gets posted at full price (RRP) and gets so many votes.

I understand Sony has a better reputation than Facebook but half price is half price and this is bargain website.

    • +2

I think the problem is trust issue.

For example, if you post half price Google nest hub people will people go crazy. Not saying google is trustworthy, but definitely have more trust than Mark Zucker.

    • +2

People want a PS5 very few people want this regardless of the price.

      • I think this product is more useful, has actual function (video-call / smart home control).

Maybe PS5 = kind of expensive “hype” product with less function more entertainment (video-game / blu-ray player) is more popular now.
People are saving up money to buy just 1x hype product, so they can be seen as popular / in fashion i guess.

  • +2

Yeah I don't get all the negative votes. A bargain is a bargain. Just because you need a facebook account to use a device isn't a reason to leave a neg I don't think?
Surely people wouldn't leave negs for items requiring Ebay plus, Amazon prime or Costco accounts?

  • Privacy and security: Mic and camera disable switch, integrated camera cover.

    Good feature.

  • Why??

  • isnt better to get a samsung tab or ipad? dont think you can use them for browsing webpages.

    • Similar to Google Home Hub / Amazon Echo Show products it is basically a simple version Android tablet (limited apps), but with better sound quality (bigger speakers).
It only has a few additional apps like Zoom, Spotify etc and it has browser to view webpages & play YouTube video etc.

But tablet is different use it has battery & is light / portable (also I think more expensive).
This is more leave at home for video-calling, music playing & smart home control only.
And maybe reading recipe or watching YouTube.

My kid loves it. Chats with her cousins and gparents and can run around when doing so and the camera tracking motion is pretty cool. It's missing some features, like screen lock during video call so kid doesn't just keep pressing the button but $99?, winner if you ask me. s

Switch off the microphone and camera when not in use for privacy purposes. Whatsapp and Messenger contacts are great since almost everyone we know has at least one of them accounts.

Oh by the way, I didn't login to facebook and it works just fine.

"Hey Google, do any parents have Google Duo?" Yeah, nah.

  • is there actually a fb app to watch some fb live? checked some reviews and no mention of it.

    • The quotes in the deal description are copy pasted from Portal website.

Some features, including "Hey Portal", Facebook Watch, Facebook Gaming, Facebook Live and display settings aren't available when you set up your Portal with WhatsApp only or when a WhatsApp-only login exists on a shared device.

So if you sign-in with Facebook account there is Facebook Watch / Gaming / Live.

Please read deal description in full.
You will need to use a genuine Facebook account with Portal, if you just create a new account to use with Portal (even if it is your first Facebook account) it may get banned.

  • Wouldn't touch anything branded with facebook with the possibility of the company being divided. Would hate to buy a device only to find out in 3 months, whatapp no longer works. In saying all this Amazon purchased Bebo has year and I am team amazon

  • zack sucks

  • Hah a mic/camera built in device connected to Facebook to be permanently on and I'll have to pay for it still? Out, I've sold myself to Google already, at least they're "free" (as in they don't camouflage. that I AM the product).

  • trying to buy but having issues at the checkout!
    anybody else have an issue?
