[Unobtainable] Launtel Standby NBN (1/1mbit*) from $1.20 Per Day ($36.50 Per Month)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

An unusual deal - but perfect for those who need a low bandwidth standby connection for smart home connectivity, back-to-base alarms or movement detection , basic email / web browsing etc. Launtel are offering a 1/1Mbit plan on NBN from $1.20 per day ($36.50 per month) with the ability to ramp those speeds up to whatever as needed. That would make it the cheapest NBN offering in the country.

You can leave it on 1/1Mbit during the week, and turn it up to 50/20 for weekends, for example - and pay $1.08 extra per day that you use the higher speed.

//Update - the speeds are not just slow, but on very low packet priority. From my personal testing, this connection is only good for keeping very basic connectivity online. For example, my pvoutput solar feed continues to update and my weather monitor stays connected and updates. But little else. Good for keeping your home connected at a very basic level. Anything more than this and I would recommend paying the $1.99 per day for the full fat 25/5 plan

Is this a bargain? Well - it's a relatively new offering form Launtel, and no one else can match this price for fixed line NBN - so, I'll let you judge.

They of course offer higher speed options, plus the unique ability to change speeds within minutes (which I personally LOVE). So if you're hardly home but still want your home to remain connected - maybe the standby option is for you - and just crank that speed up to 100Mbit or whatever when you're needing the speed. Pay per day per speed level - easy.

As usual - use referral codes for sign-up credit. Enjoy the free 7 day trial, and the almost instant porting that they offer.

Enjoy - and peace.

Important note
This 1/1 Plan is primarily used to 'pause' an NBN service and is not intended to be a usable service. Actual download / uploads speeds may vary from what is communicated in the deal title.

See comment from the Launtel representative on Whirlpool
"I think it would be best to show 0/0 – it really isn't meant to be a service that is useful for anything except keeping the connection alive and not disconnected from NBN or whichever wholesaler we are using."

Mod: See here, deal isn't actually 1/1 but much slower, deal title is therefore unobtainable. Moved to forums to retain/continue discussion.

Cannot recommend these guys enough, excellent customer service and service has been flawless for me (FTTP)

    • +18

I agree these guys are awesome. But this isn’t a deal because the 1/1 is not meant to be a service.

      • +5

Why not? It is fairly acceptable to work with text/emails/messengers etc. It should be enough for 480p online video and some online gaming - I remember playing CS 1.5 having only 40kbit

        • Someone mentioned it was insufficient for their Google Home to operate, so you might not actually get a service that is completely useable.

        • Yeah definitely. Add in 30 days to download an update for said game lol

          • @Kentrolla: With 1Mbit it takes about 24 hours to download 10GB which is not that bad = 1.5 days because of mixed use

        • Yeah upon testing, it's good for keeping data feeds alive (monitoring etc) but little more.

  • +2

Downloading GTAV be like 10 days.

No need to update CoD, the real WW3 would happen first.

Launtel is very good and in 2021 they will have all POI's are Launtel Owned. (Premium Direct)

    • They’ve been saying that for a while now.

Bit rate is more important than resolution

    • What’s best/cheapest plan around for 2 people gaming/youtube? I’m on a 100/20 but pretty sure I don’t need it after seeing this.

I used to play online while livestreaming to YouTube on a capped 1.5mbps connection lol

        Worked flawlessly, 1080p

  • +3

A 4G modem with a $30 plan arguably represents better value.

    • Arguably - yes, but fixed line with unlimited data…

      • +7

Does being fixed line make a difference if you're capped at such slow speeds? A Telstra sim for $15 a month sounds like a far better deal.

      • +9

        Unlimited data?
Pretty sure you're capped at 324GB/month

    • A 4G modem will have completely different latency and drops in signal quality.

      • -7

Unless you have the technical skill to manage the connection to ensure 1Mbps is never exceeded, I expect the 4G modem will be a better experience. Very few places that have a fixed line NBN connection have poor 4G reception. In fact anyone on 50Mbps or slower plans with monthly downloads under 200GB should consider 4G / 5G as a viable alternative.

        • +5

Very few places that have a fixed line NBN connection have poor 4G reception

That's quite a sweeping statement. What's your source? I'm just 30km from the Melbourne CBD and my area is poor for 4G.

          • @pjetson: I live in one of the very few locations also

    • other advantage of this over 4g would be the static IP that you'd get but a 4g modem would seem better in this case if it was just for a failover or standby

      • the static IP that you'd get

You don't get a static IP from Launtel unless you pay extra.

  • Cheapest router and modem from them? Or another company?

    • +1

Old telstra modem. Plug and play baby.

These guys were an absolute nightmare to deal with recently. Tried to switch to them but they made mistake after mistake at evey step and we ended up without a connection for almost a week before the realised what they had done. As soon as the connection was fixed and activated we ported out (which took minutes)

Their customer service team are inept at best

This is a decent deal I suppose and I understand my experience is probably a one off that could of happened anywhere. I just feel that as a customer they literally have zero f’s about what was happening and the fact it was a simple fix that took them almost a week to find left me with the sourest of tastes in my mouth.

    • -4

Wait until you see the incompetence of their business team.

    • +10

Their customer service team are inept at best

Oh wow that hasn't been my experience at all! Launtel have genuinely had the best customer service out of any of the ISP/RSPs that I've been with

      • +1

+1 they are the only telco that was persistent enough to get my line fixed. My FTTN had suffered from degradation for more than 2 years. I had dropouts randomly and my line speed dropped in half. I was with Aussie broadband. I can’t say they were bad or anything in general, but I wasn’t happy with their attitude towards the line issue. They were like…oh well line degradation. Maybe it’s gonna fix itself. Your line can still do 50/20, we can downgrade your plan to that. The telco I was with before them basically told me the same story. No one could be assed to do anything. I could live with the speed but the dropouts were beyond annoying for Zoom calls and downloads. This prompted me to cancel my NBN and went on Optus mobile broadband…until rona hit and the speed went down the drain, so I had to go back onto NBN. I went with Launtel this time, of course the line was still crap since no one bothered enough to fix it. Man, it was absolutely the best customer service I have received. Granted the issue took a while to fix but they were at it all along doing something to try to help. It wasn’t their fault that it took a while either because NBN kept telling them there was no issue…until finally they got enough evidence to show NBN enough evidence to say there’s an issue. They finally agreed to send someone out. Guess what? Of course there’s an issue. Took the technician 2 visits to fix.

    • +3

I had no service for a month trying to switch to Tangerine even though I gave them weeks of notice before the swap date. I even have written evidence from the previous ISP that Tangerine was bold-face lying to me. I contacted Launtel and they had me up and running in 4 minutes. I've been very pleased Launtel and the actual speeds too. I guess every company drops the ball from time to time.

    • +4

Why neg a comment just because you didn't have their experience? I found their support very good when I used them, but this person obviously didn't.

    • +2

Sorry that you had a bad experience. I’ve been with them since they first launched and have had multiple interactions with their customer service and every one has been great. I haven’t found them to be ‘inept’ or giving ‘zero f’s’ about their customers.

  • +3

    Maybe good for my in-laws

    • +2

      Do you dislike your in-laws?

      • Who doesn’t? :P

  • +13

This isn't meant for actual use, it's designed to keep lines connected - particularly HFC - to avoid reconnection issues. Wouldn't suggest this, the TPG deal at $30 a month is a better option.

    • -5

Ah yes, but it's technically possibly to use it for basic usage. They do indeed give the ability to completely pause the connection at $0/day - but this is good for keeping basic services running.

Our house, for example, has a lot of home automation thanks to Google Home devices. This plan keeps the lights on (literally) while we're away, plus lets the house sitter listen to spotify / watch cat videos on youtube in glorious 480p quality while we're gone.

      • +4

Whirlpool users have suggested issues even getting 0.1/0.1…

        • I did see that. I might give it a go again and do further testing. Still - basic connectivity like home automation would still work.

        • +3

This plan is more like 150k

About 3 times better than 56k dialup.

          • -1

@plasmoske: @plasmoske: Wrong. 56kbps will give you actual speeds of 5KB/s
So given 1mbps will give you actual speeds of 150KB/s, this is still 30x better if it was reliably 150kbps

        • I wish I had Jesse boy

    • Also the TPG deal only gives 10GB of data if I recall correctly? Even though Launtel's standby plan is slower - you can technically download 10GB per day - for the whole month. That's 310GB in a standard month.

All depends on needs. Worth spreading the word for those who can benefit from this.

      • +1

I mean I can download 17gb of stuff on 56k dialup a month. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Also the rep said it's not exactly 1mbps. It's more like 0.15mbps, which you would be struggling to download 2gb a day.

        • +1

I mean I can download 17gb of stuff on 56k dialup

          You sure?

          Who you gonna call?

      • If you intend on downloading 300gb a month, why wouldn’t you just get a normal nbn plan? Lol

    • +1

But unlike TPG you can switch to 100/40mbit for a day if you need a lot of speed and then downgrade to base level.

  • +4

$25 referral credit + 7 day free trial means you could technically get 27 days for free.

  • +1

I mean for standby…. some sort of long term 4G plan might be more cost effective.
Just depends on your needs I guess.
    It’s still $438 per year…

  • +8
    • -2

Ah, good find. Well - still, home automation etc still operates, and when I tested it, basic browsing and stuff still worked. Good to know that it's slower than 1Mbit at times though.

  • I dealt with them quite a few times and they are quite responsive, check up on the situation when something happens after a few days.

I had to call the hotline too and was pleasantly surprised as they don’t seem to have (yet?) foreign hotline service. English isn’t my native language and trying to solve an issue + decode an accent is usually a nightmare. ABB is also very good but I like Launtel for the flexibility of changing the speed just for a few days.

    • I called on the weekend and spoke to the main bloke in Tassie. So nice after getting the off-shore call centre shuffle and lies from Tangerine.

  • +3

Based on recent comments, I'm literally switching my service across to the standby plan now to do more testing…. Will post results shortly.

    • +4

Testing complete. And yes - standby is more like 0.1Mbit. Doesn't seem usable for much at all. Maybe a linux box sending ping packets and not much else.

  • +2

These guys are great. Responsive and understand what customer service should be. Really liked the option to change speeds.

  • +2

Be careful if you are already have Launtel and click “show more plans” the standby plan will show but all your pricing will go up and they won’t put it back to the old pricing even if you ask.

“ I'm afraid there isn't a way for me to revert you back to your previous pricing. I double checked with my manager and they confirmed once you change you're locked in. ”

    E.g new pricing for 25/5 is $87 a month

  • Launtel was average for me. 50/20 plan on FTTP and was getting about 40mbps down, switched to ABB and am getting a near consistent 52mbps down on 50/20.

    • +1

      I'm on Launtel 50/20 FTTN and getting 54.2Mbit / 17.5 Mbit.

      • That's weird. Not sure what the reason for my speed would be.

        • Either on a vocus POI or it was before ISPs were able to overprovision (maybe ABB implemented it earlier), would be my guesses.

          • @3v3rqu357: This was less than a week ago.

        • Maybe give them a call?

I had similar speed issues with my friend address, gave a call and they fixed within 15mins.

          • @[Deactivated]: I'll probs give them another crack in the future but there are just so many good deals going around for new customers. I might just keep hopping between offers since FTTP only takes a few minutes to provision

  • +6

OK - so this is where I backtrack on the "bargain".

After switching speeds to the standby speed, I can confirm it's pretty unusable. 0.13Mbit/s download. Most of my Google home devices failed to even maintain a connection.

ADMIN - It's probably not worth having this as a bargain.

    • +1

      Perhaps edit the original post?

    • it's pretty unusable. 0.13Mbit/s download.

      Is that during peak ?

      • If it's not dropping out.

    • +3

It's not just the speed that's the issue. The problem is the ISP is de-prioritising your traffic to the lowest level, meaning that many of the data packets that you sent or receive get put in a queue, and then get dropped from the network instead of being sent to their intended destination. Your Google home dropped out of the network due to excessive packet loss.

See Wikipedia article on Traffic policing and also "How does bandwidth throttling work" question on Stack Exchange

That's why this sort of service would not only be slow, but unusable, due to packet loss.

      • I’m with exetel on 12/5 I think, some websites muck up with it, which is somewhat ridiculous, Telstra website is number one culprit, but Netflix streaming is fine

  • +2

Any deals on dial up lol

    • Last heard it was free, but you will have to have ads on all over your screen

  • if 56k was usable than this should be too right? I remember streaming on 56k back in the days

  • Might be worth a try

  • +1

Better off getting a 12m long expiry prepaid SIM if you only need 1/1 it means you only need very little data.
$1 a day is $366 a year, for $150 you can get boost 12m 80gb SIM as an example.

  • +4

Psssssssssschhhhhhhhhhhhhwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhbubaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhsccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhpsssssssssssh.. Oh sorry that was just my dialup modem.

  • I’ve tried Launtel - speeds were a touch slower than ABB. After seeing activity in the Launtel Users group on Facebook, I got the impression that they were network cowboys. I was going to switch back to ABB but ended up joining Superloop.

  • Neging just because the real world 0.1/0.1 is useless - great of the OP to test for us.
However the Launtel website advertises 0/0, so technically 0.1/0.1 is a deal? Idk

  • +1

If 4G is an viable option, Felix Mobile is better and slightly cheaper. See my comment in

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/581638

Additionally Telstra and Vodafone have unlimited internet at $15 per month, capped to 1.5mbps speed.

  • +2

Both Telstra and Optus offer data SIMs that provide 5GB/pm for $15 a month, then default to uncapped data at 1.5mbps. On paper a much better offer — particularly if the Optus SIM is your 'second' deal, which atm is subject to a 50% discount.

  • That would make it the cheapest NBN offering in the country.

TPG has a $30 option… so this isn’t the cheapest in the country.

  • +1

I think the bargain with this ISP is being able to change speeds, day to day. Want 250 mbit for a day for that game download? Sure thing. Turn it up. Then End of day, turn it down.

Also ability to pause your service entirely. I hence don't understand this plan, when you can pause entirely without cost? And have it back on normally within minutes reportedly.

    • Or just add the referral code to your profile.

  • 1/1 is NBN? what a joke

  • If you need a basic connection for low data use here's a solution I used for a friend who normally uses her phone hotspot for internet, so when she's not at home there's no internet (at the house).

We wanted to be able to upload her solar inverter data to the manufacturers (Goodwe) servers (so it's visible on the app). Wasn't sure of the data quantity, but as it happens it's about 12-15Mb a month.

An old unlocked Telstra 4G wifi modem with a TPG sim that costs $1 per month for 50Mb of data. You buy the sim for $10 and preload the service with $20 (there plan $1 comes out of that). Connects via Vodafone network. Works great.

Another lurk I got is I bought a Telstra Gen 2 NBN modem off Gumtree for about $50 and they have a 4G backup sim (if the NBN goes down). Not sure if Telstra pay for that or it's the previous owners they left in by mistake, but I get an 18Mbps connection (for free) if I pull out the NBN line.

    • Yeah I’ve sold a couple of those unopened, what remains of the sims is unknown to me, from memory on whirlpool forums people said they tend to expire but interesting regardless

  • +1

    Ok further testing today.

On the standby plan… My solar monitoring system is still feeding data to pvoutput. Likewise my weather monitor continues to update.

Google home products are connected (I can see them online) but performing a speed test from the nest router fails. Likely a victim of low bandwidth or packet priority.

Essentially the connection is fine for super basic connectivity such as automated systems connecting out to the web, but not useful for much else.

Keeps the house online and little more.

    • I want to get a weather station for use with PVOutput and my solar. Any recommendations? Hoping it can be done for under $300-ish.
