Put it towards a Hisense, LG or Samsung instead. You won't regret it.

    • -3

Should be a Sony, LG or Samsung, not Hisense

      • I returned this one and got a hisense instead, much better. But no point convincing a sony fan boy.

        • -4

Enjoy the Hisense os. Enjoy the Hisense when you can't find the app you're looking for in their store.

    • Mate just returned a Sammy and got a Sony. Crappy picture from upscaling HD

    • Bought one to replace my 55 4k sony. Very impressed. Sound is terrible, but I run a sound bar. There is no way other brands are twice as good as they are twice as expensive.

  • +26

Picked up one before Christmas myself.

TV is identical to the Hitachi SM20 series on sale at JB HiFi for $999 (down from $1,499), also sold as the Konka Q7 Pro in the US. The OEM manufacturer of the TV is MTC.

When left at standard picture mode, colour is a bit more vivid than my old 55 incher with a Samsung LSC550FN08 panel in it. It also has darker black and less dirty screen effect than my old TV.

The TV has dedicated game mode and PC mode. Input lag for gaming is not the best but serviceable. There is also automatic 24FPS detection for film mode. The US equivalent (Konka Q7 Pro) suggests that the TV has 120 Hz interpolation but doesn't appear to be available on the EKO.

Comes with a bluetooth voice remote. The remote is serviceable but the voice assistant is a bit of a hit and miss.

    SOC is a MStar / Mediatek T22 (MSD 6886) (Quad A55 + Mali470 MP3) with 1.5 GB RAM and 8GB local storage.

Compatibility with HDMI ARC might not be the best - it had difficulty connecting that with one of my sound bars via HDMI ARC (CEC control works via TV remote, but no audio playback).

    • How do you know is identical to the Hitachi btw

      • +15

Looked into system info and noticed same firmware (except for the EKO suffixes) and board info (both are MTCMSD6886).

Also the fact that they look absolutely identical in both designs and specs doesn't help either.

    • 1.5 GB RAM seems to be slow, watching TV or Youtube may be fine. But playing some games in this Android TV may be slow.

      • Disney + runs in 4K no sweat and Kodi runs without issues.

        • facepalm :)

        • Disney + runs in 4K

Does your Disney+ output audio in 5.1?

    • I can confirm the same issue with ARC. I get CEC volume control (after some faffing around), but no audio through ARC. Ended up using an optical cable and setting the TV to output PCM.

At one point it stopped working and I had to set TV sound output to Dolby and then back to PCM - pretty sure this is what got it working again.

    • Compatibility with HDMI ARC might not be the best

Just found this possible solution - try using a different/better HDMI cable:

      https://whrl.pl/RgcIAE

edit: never mind, just saw your post elsewhere in this thread and I suspect it was you that posted this to whirlpool! Will leave this here for anyone else trying to fix this issue…

      • As a side note, these cables should be good enough for HDR 10 & 4k @ 60/120Hz I would have thought (TV only goes up to 60Hz).

Will have to test the cable I've used with the TV seems ok but could affect sync. The Samsung HDMI cable that came with the soundbar should be half decent, likewise with dell 2k monitor cable being a 2.0?

  • Can anyone comment on the quality of the picture? I'm not expecting Samsung or Sony quality but I also don't want to be disappointed. Is Eko okay?

    • Same question .I have sonic tv atm. Is this an upgrade? Or should I buy samsung or sony

      • What ways do you feel like Ur current TV is lacking

      • Its ok.. I mean as much as you'd expect for $700 qled, game mode on ps4pro/ps5 is fine, enjoying it.

    • I've been told it's a Samsung panel with edge lighting instead of full array back lighting.

    • I returned mine and got a Sony instead. If you only have $700 to spend I'd say it's fairly decent for the price. I preferred gaming on my old plasma, found motion didn't do very well at all. Picture looked pretty good and colours popped.

  • Missed it. Nevermind. Would have considered it as a stop gap while waiting for some of the premium panels with hdmi 2.1 to come down in price this year. Probably would have ended up never changing!

How much does this beast weigh? Didn’t see it in the specs.

  • They don't list the details that matter.. such as brightness. X.x personally need atleast 350-450

  • +3

Has it ever been in stock?
Plus I don't get it how come these guys run so many sales if there no stock to sell 😬

  • Managed to grab one for pickup. Hopefully they have stock. Ty op.

  • Bought one. Thanks

  • Nothing near me at all.

  • +1

Grabbed one with 5% off giftcards for the most part. Saving another $30ish dollars
    Cheers
Good fill in tv until I suss out what one I want. Gives me alot more time to research them.

Let go of your brand name TV's for a second and these are the best value TV's on the market. I have the 55“ version that cost under $600 and blows away TV's over $1K.

  • +2

Seems to be stock in a few SA stores

  • Great deal, no stock near me though :(

  • +1

Any stock in WA? Not seeing any…

  • got one from last deal

I used it as a PC monitor

It has a good panel, nothing else.

One thing really annoying me is it cant turn off automatically after I shut down my pc( setting is "will power off -10mins after no activities") My 3yrs old TCL dun have this kind of problem. Now as a habbit sometimes I just forgot to turn it off , and it consumes around 170w (just black screen) whole night.

    • Maybe use a WiFi connected power outlet and automate it to turn off and back on?

      • I did mate thats why I can read power consumption

But how can power outlet turn it off when it constantly consume 170w

        • I meant like set a time for the outlet to turn off each night after u go to bed in case u forget

  • +1

Picked up the last one of these at Dapto yesterday, Figtree had stock yesterday.

So far it seems quite good value for money, the PS5 looks pretty amazing on it.

  • What's the size of the 65" box?

    • Same question. Will this fit a falcon bf?

      • +3

Looking for a cheap garage solution?

        • No, for my living room, i have an old 50" samsung plasma that only does 1080, want more reso for my 2.7 and 4k footages.

          • +2

@zennow: You missed my joke, but you wouldn't be the first.

    • +1

      66”

    • +1

1900mm x 950mm. Easily fit in the back of the Xtrail.

      • +2

It just managed to fit into a vw golf with back seats down and front seats pushed almost all the way up.

  • Does the TV support Dolby Vision or only HDR?

    • HDR 10bit

    • Interestingly, page 30 of the manual has a "Dolby Vision Notification" toggle in the picture settings screenshot. But there are things in the screenshots that aren't always on the TV itself, for eg Bass/Treble in Sound settings on page 31.

  • Damn I bought the JVC from last deal, wo see if I can return it and get this though it's probably similar quality just size

  • I also would of got this if I didn’t buy the JVC 55” from big w. Oh well never mind. I’m happy with jvc and no stock of this eko anywhere near me

  • No stock around Sydney. Disappointing

  • +2

65 inch… Right on that annoying to transport size.
Anyone know of stock near North Brisbane?
… and can I borrow your Ute?

I'll let you use my staff card, save another $69

  • Staff card will net you another $69 off. Can't confirm it works as of 2021 though.

This should net you 34 container points too, so you can grab a free 1.8l cooking container with this purchase on your points card.

    Lonk to those Whirlpool reviews?

  • +2

I got one of these when it was on special before chrisrtmas. For the price, I'm very happy with it. The screen is good and bright, quality isn't as good as my (far more expensive) Samsung, but it's marginal.
the menu's can get a bit sluggish, but it does all work, and it runs netflix and youtube fine. Chromecast built in is a nice feature too.

    • How's boot up speed and general navigation around UI?

      • Boot up is ok, not the fastest, but it's not an eternity.
The UI is pretty good. It's an android TV, so it's a good interface. The speed of navigation slows down occasionally. It seems to come right again on it's own, so I assume it kills of unused apps, but maybe it needs to do it a bit sooner.

      • Boot up is 2s as it lives in low power state. Start up is about 15s if you power fully off.

    • How does 1080p content compare to the Samsung?

  • Can someone please share the Calibration Settings for EKO QLED?

    • +1

Try using the standard picture mode instead of movie and start from there. Movie mode has colour saturation dialled all the way up, which will make colour looks weird. I have left most of them untouched but contrast, sharpness, DNR and MPEG NR dialled down a bit.

My current settings are as followed:
      Backlight : 90
      Brightness : 50
      Contrast : 46
      Saturation : 50
      Hue : 0
      Sharpness : 7

      Gamma : Middle
      DNR : Low
      MPEG NR : Low
Adaptive Luma Control : Low (live TV) / off (streaming)
      Local Contrast Control : Medium
      DI Film Mode : Auto
      Blue Stretch : on

  • Got the 58" frameless deal recently and within a few days the screen started showing problems with dark scenes. Almost looked like an aliasing or HDR issue (but I'm not a TV expert). Basically only a few shades of black would show up and you'd get awful image quality in that part of the screen.

Whether it was a fault (probably) or just crappy TV, I returned it for a full refund a few days later.

I bought an EKO 65" 4K ultra HD android TV a year ago on the boxing day sales from Big W. Got it for $560. Its one of my best buys ever. No issues at all, it's a great TV for the price. I use it with the Kodi app and my VPN app installed. U.S Netflix, AFL footy all hassle free. Highly recommended. Just remind yourself that you're not buying a $2000 TV if you get one and you'll be more than pleased with the purchase.

    • Ditto, one of my best buys in recent years.

      • Yep same, my fave purchase from last year!

Do either of you guys use Disney+? I seem to have an issue with optical out audio.

  • No stock East Coast QLD

  • I brought the 55" one last month, my advice for anyone is also buy a Soundbar it improves the audio quality so much better. It's a nice TV 👌

  • +1

58" for $549 if 65" is too large for your living room https://www.bigw.com.au/product/eko-58-frameless-qled-4k-ult…

    • Same specs as 65” ? Other than the size ?

      • +2

        Yup, exactly the same.

  • Anyone knows if this would be good for a bright room with lots of windows?

    • +1

A bit reflective, kinda diffused. Bight enough to compete with the sun.

      • Agreed. My non-QLED model is quite reflective. I have to turn off my downlights when watching at night.

  • Could anyone comment on how this looks when watching sport & fta tv? I mainly play Xbox and stream Netflix etc. but will use it to watch Afl, cricket, basketball etc. and the occasional fta tv program. Thank you.

    • +2

You could stick it in game mode, I run PS5 in 4K 60fps on this TV no motion issues.

  • -2

    Oled is way better.

  • @EKOCustomerService - sold out like hot cakes! Do you have any idea when NSW Big W will be getting any of these, and also the 58" QLED back in stock? Many thanks

    • +1

lol who are you asking on here?

They're quite responsive on FB if you need support.

      • Thanks. (I messaged them about the EKO 58" - great prompt reply - was told 'stock is due back in Feb but that there are 140 units left in NSW' but EKO don't know which stores. However Big W head office this morning said no stock in any NSW stores - perhaps they are in Big W warehouse yet to be distributed? )

  • PSA: there are 8 in stock in Bathurst.

  • Nah yea nah yea nah not going to jump onto this till i get some feedback on picture quality

  • Managed to grab one from Epping Vic. Online show no stock at Epping but they have stock in store when I call them. Ty op.

  • Got one from Pacific Weribee
