Wearing a Mask When Not Mandatory to Set a Good Example to Your Own Community?

Just wondering what you guys think of wearing a mask not because you think you need one in a state where there are no community cases, but just to help normalise mask wearing. Lots of kids in the community could live in households where the adults are skeptics about the science of stopping a pandemic and where a mask is seen as silly or pointless, or an affront to their liberty to show off their pretty lips maybe. So if those kids and adults see other adults wearing a mask like it's nothing at all then it could help noramlise it in their minds. Even though the state still recommends masks and the supermarkets have signs out front recommending masks, most people don't wear them. In some other countries masks are normal, if you're sick, or if there is flu about, or you're just worried about getting sick then you put on a mask and it's totally normal, no one thinks it's any stranger than putting socks and shoes on your feet before leaving the house.

Covid probably would kill my very heavyset parents so I would wear one while out anyway.

So I usually get the cold every year- but this year and last year- no cold

So should we just wear masks whenever or at least make it necessary for anyone with cold to wear a mask like the Japanese do?

I'm for it. Imagine how many sick days we'll save.

  To your point about wearing masks all the time, you do need to consider the long term effects it might have on our respiratory systems as masks do somewhat hinder the flow of air into our nostrils..
  
  One thing I don’t see people talk about enough, is us working on our immunity and fitness in general. They go a long way in preventing illnesses.

      You’re assuming there’s no risk from wearing a mask most of the day.
      
      You’ll recall that it in fact took our government a good period of time to confirm that masks were even recommended when the pandemic began. There were comments at the time by the health advisors to the effect that there were detriments to wearing masks all the time and insufficient evidence that masks would curtail COVID. They later did a 180, I suspect only after they saw reduced community transmission in countries using masks.
      
      Even now masks aren’t recommended for children. If no risk - ask yourself why.
      
      I’ll happily wear a mask while we are still deep in a COVID wave but don’t agree we should be wearing them indefinitely to reduce incidents of the common cold (as the OP is talking about)

        This would be nice, and the benefit can be if others who had the cold before you did this, then less chance you get the cold, and hence no need to use mask, or tissue or have to have your breathing impeded by all the snot

        I have zero worries with tolerating a certain level of deaths when we reopen.
        
        In my profession I tolerate it every day.
        
        Unfortunately as a community we are intolerant of a few deaths from covid, so we have a somewhat irrational fear of covid whilst we tolerate many other deaths from disease.
        
        We will need to tolerate a certain amount of deaths from covid and the govt needs to start flagging that before they reopen.

  Good idea in crowded spaces like public transport, but should we be going into those spaces with a cold and flu symptoms anyway, pandemic or otherwise?
  
  With many viruses you’re often contagious before being symptomatic so it may only make a small difference to risk if not being worn all the time regardless of symptoms. I can’t see mask wearing all the time in public spaces taking off in the Australian culture permanently.
  
  For the general community outside of a pandemic reusable masks surely are most appropriate given the amount of non recylcable plastic waste they generate.

        Seatbelts actually stop you dying, and have no downsides. Masks may do something in very close contact with people, but that isn't the only place they are mandated. Having a 95% chance of dying in a crash at 100kmh is also slightly different to a cough with a 0.01% chance of death. As above, false equivalence.

        You really have a thing against masks don't you. You know governments are listening and following the experts, the scientist, then weighing up the pros and cons, then making decisions, and they've decided to make it a requirement for the public to wear masks when necessary.
