Needed a new router, came across this last night. Officeworks stores are showing limited stock, but I was able to get JB to price match it over the phone.

  • Got a 3 pack of these from TGG commercial about 10 days ago and so far it’s been very good but I’ve had a few times (maybe 3-4 times in the 10 days) where the internet just completely drops out and I just have no connection and I have to go and turn modem off and again. My ISP is Telstra incase anybody wants to know.

    • how much did you pay?

      • $393 for 3 pack @ TGG commercial.

    • +1

I've had the 3-pack now for > 6 months and never had a problem… Also with Telstra.

  • Looking at getting 3 of the nests - does the single go on special often? ie better off getting two now, one later, or waiting for a deal for all 3?

    • +6

You'll be better off getting the 3 together…

    • +3

I’d recommend signing up to the good guys commercial (free access available via sunsuper) and getting a 3 pack for $393 on there. I think it’s best to pay the little bit extra and get the 3 pack with 2 access point for more reliability.

IMO it's not worth getting Nest Wifi now due to lack of Wifi 6 support
I think better to wait for a little while for the next version which will be more future proof

Wifi 6 makes no difference for the vast majority of people. Also will cost significantly more than existing wifi products. The first wifi 6E mesh from linksys is US$850 for a 2 pack…

Unless you have an extremely crowded wifi environment stick with existing mesh. If you are looking for wifi 6E wait until 2022 or 2023 until the prices come down.

If you have gigabit internet then it will make slightly more sense, but even then with my wifi 6 devices right next to my wifi 6 (not 6E) router it only hits around 800 mbit.

      • $4 more for Deco X20 3 pack from TGG Commercial.
        2 pack is $224.
        Kills this deal.

        • +1

They are for different people really, Nest wifi has google assistant, speaker/mic built into the 2 satellite points, more "user friendly - ie limited advanced features".

Personally I like the Asus routers since you can pretty much mesh all their routers (with some models not working and not on Merlin firmware), so if you upgrade later the older router just becomes part of the mesh. Yes you pay more, but all my Asus routers I have bought in the past 10 years are still working great. Also if you are into Merlin firmware there is that option.

          • @azukay: Yes the Asus stuff is great, but you don't pay more - you pay a lot more.
Also, for the same price as this deal you can buy X20 2 pack plus a Nest Mini.

So I just did a quick comparison through speedtest (I got ABB gigabit)

Asus RT-AC66U - AC wifi - next to router 571 mbps; 10m away through 1 wall where the Zenwifi sits - 298 mbps

        Asus Zenwifi XT8 - Wifi 6 - next to router 835 mbps; 10m away through 1 wall where the RT-AC66U is - 490 mbps

Ethernet for reference is 950 mbps both through internet and transferring files to my NAS

Wifi 6 admittedly have longer range, but my house is also weird got quite a lot of concrete walls and the AC66U is really used by me as a bridge/switch at this moment.

    • IMO it's not worth getting Nest Wifi now due to lack of Wifi 6 support

A Wifi 6 Nest device would be great. But a decent WiFi 5 mesh system can still be better than a cheap WiFi 6 system. Eg the Wifi 6 Deco x60 (which is the model up from the x20) is slower than most WiFi 5 systems. Eg:
      https://dongknows.com/tp-link-deco-x60-review/

If you can afford a reputable WiFi 6 brand like Asus then that'll be ideal. But for those on a tight budget, an average WiFi 5 system can be better than a cheap WiFi 6 system.

  • Good deal - I got just the router off eBay a week ago at 190 and it's been great (already had the set of 3 1st gen points) - one thing to note is the 2nd gen point is apparently the same hardware as the 1st gen set (except with additional speaker/assistant). But having the 2nd gen router connected directly as the base point has helped reach to 1st gen points and range to other devices

    • Was it a seamless integration? Im thinking of doing the same thing but worried about the connectivity between gen 1 and 2

      • +1

Seamless integration, I got the x3 pack Gen 2, ending up getting a Gen 1 point (for backhaul via port on rear) for older devices.

        • Thanks! Got one

      • +1

Yep, seamless as adinico mentions.. but if you already have the gen 1 network setup you'll need to reset the existing points to factory I think: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9548099?hl=en

  • The best part is this will replace your current wifi router, bypass having to disable old wifi from router.
Wish I didn’t buy the cheaper tenda mesh before.

Google nest have built in google assistant and speaker for music. So worth it.

Ever since i have google nest, wifi been great and stable, even stream 4k content from my plex server to my phone no issue, direct play no trancode require.

If you plan to smart your home, this is the best investment.

If you have cameras with nvr, must set new ip for the nvr.

Work fine with sonos beam and apple tv if anyone wonder.

    • If you plan to smart your home, this is the best investment.

Definitely. My old ISP provided router had issues with wifi congestion with smart home devices.. frustrating.

this comment was written before i learnt to read

This doesn't have an ethernet port on any of the mesh nodes.

If you need one to plug in a NAS or something this won't cut it.

    • hrmm so no points have an ethernet port or is that related to this one being '2nd gen'?

      • +1

The router has ports but not the points. I don't own the product but I need something that has ports on the mesh nodes.

        • likewise, important.

    • Buy a Gen 1 version off ebay for ~$110. They have backwards compatibility and two Ethernet ports.

  • -2

These things can't even run in AP mode.
I thought I was just stupid not being able to find the option to do that, turns out it wasn't me that was stupid…

    • Lol a few people think it's reasonable for a mesh system to not have AP mode.

  • -6

Can also still get the Deco M5 3 pack for $182 from TGG Commercial.
    Kills this deal again.

    • Why did this comment get neg'd? What re the main differences that a 'normal' user would notice?

      • -2

        Google fanbois? OP?
The Deco will give greater coverage, has Ethernet ports on all nodes (which can be used for backhaul or other devices), can be used in AP mode, can be expanded with better/newer Deco's in future, has a web interface, etc.
The only advantage the Nest has is they are smart speakers as well, but many people would already have those, and in more useful positions as well (eg. one of my Deco's is in a cupboard.)

        • but the AC2200 is also going to play a factor in this case being the M5 is AC1300 right? Like the Smart speaker, Google integration and AC2200 sorta takes it over the line, but you'd also want value for money.

          • -1

@ExtraSalt: Yes AC2200 is better I guess for smaller houses, could get the X20 3 pack as I said above.

            • @McFly: Yeah but in that case your comparison should be the the M9 v Nest WiFi Kit which yes still retails cheaper, but is a fairer comparison.

Would you know how much that this on TGG Commercial? I'm tossing up between M9 and Nest Wifi

              • -1

@ExtraSalt: Why? As above, X20 3 pack is $4 more.

                • @McFly: yeah i guess but the USB-A outlets would be handy to have a HDD with movies on the network for the kids as we are currently doing with our Airport Extreme atm. Thats my main draw to TP-Link's offering tbh.

                  • -1

@ExtraSalt: M9 2 pack is $243. Also leaves money for a Nest Mini.
Would only go with these for the wireless backhaul, in my case most of mine use wired.
None of these have USB ports (?)

    • I've got the deco M5 and the range on each node is lousy.
You get what you pay for.

      • Whoops, cancel that- the m5 range is good, i was thinking of another (non deco) model

  • The assisant hearing range from google nest is impressive, i was on the front door of my master room and the google nest node is in the living room (6-7metre), while i have a google home mini the master bedroom 3 metres away. The google nest node pickup my command and not the google home mini.

Overall google nest give more value for money and the wifi signal is strong enough to direct stream 4k content from plex, I didn’t expect this.

Google fix my frustration from all these years of wifi being weak, i was going to buy new router but this save me this cost.

    • a wifi router
    • a google assisant
    • a speaker
    • only show 1 wifi name for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, it will auto choose the right one.

It’s a beauti to look at too.

Cannot recommend enough for the price
