  • How much is the better one with the bigger lid and temperature gauge?

    • You can only get the Q1200 from premium Weber resellers, which BCF is not.

    • +3

Do yourself a favour and spend the money on the Q1200, regardless of whether on sale or not.

Higher lid is useful for large roasts.

Temp gauge is invaluable, I couldn't live without it.

It would be insta-regret for me if I bought the Q1000, even if I saved $50 over the 1200.

    • I think it depends on what you want to use it for. I have a Baby Q and it is great but I only use it for camping. My home BBQ is a lot bigger than any of these weber bbqs as I have the space for it.

    Any Q1200 on sale OP?

    • You can only get the Q1200 from premium Weber resellers, which BCF is not. I think the Baby Q is the only one on sale too, not the Q2000.

Weber has sold out of 1200s. They sell like hot cakes! More are due in later this month. Weber has also sold out of carts.

Plenty of 1000s around, they don't sell well because in a year's time the quartz egnition will be extremely hard to light. Also, good luck putting a chicken underneath or roasting.

For the sake of $40 head to a Weber specialist.

      Source; I'm a Weber specialist.

      • genuine question: I am considering a BBQ. Whats' so special in weber compared to other brands? I find it a lot more expensive in general.

Also, a bit skeptical about gas BBQ. I know it is a bit of a pain in the back but the taste of charcoal BBQ is unbeatable IMO…

        • +1

coal will always give the full bbq taste but it's a lot more hassle than lifting a lid & lighting a gas bbq. I have both but use my weber a lot more than the coal bbq (used more for smoking).

In terms of weber their warranty, quality & customer service is superior the competition is ziegler & brown from barbecues galore & Beefeaters Bug (amongst others). While the ziggy is a good bbq (can be used lid open) & has lots of accessories the quality & warranty is nowhere near as good as weber. Can't comment on the bug as i haven't tried it but plenty of reviews on the internet comparing all 3. I went from a ziggy to a weber q and haven't looked back.

            @Irishness: Thanks!
I got that warranty is top but I also wonder what could possibly go wrng in a BBQ to justify the price difference.

            • @ets27: you would be surprised, if you leave them open to the elements or use frequently. With many bbq's from my experience it's usually the ignition or the burners & the grill plates. One call to weber I had replacement parts turn up the next day in under 24hours & without question. The ziggy on the other hand suffered from corrosion, paint flaking, a failed control valve and they wanted $180 for 3 replacement grill plates as it was out of warranty. I put the $180 towards a weber. Talking of which anyone know where I could get replacements grill plates for it for less? It's a ziggy triple burner.

          • @Irishness: Whilst I'm an old school beefeater fan (Australian owned back in the day, now owned by Electrolux and no longer 10 year warranty) the Bugg was the most unsafe bbq I had ever seen in my life! Control knobs were on the back of the bbq so you burnt your forearms adjusting the knobs and originally they were top heavy and could easily tip over. Worst design ever. I honestly don't know how they got any Australian gas certification as we are one of the strictest in the world.

            • @[Deactivated]: I read that about the knobs, the old school beefeater bbq's 4 burners etc were absolute quality and last forever

              • @Irishness: I still have a old school beefeater 4 burner here. Purchased in 2010 and I'll still get another 7 years out of it. No parts have been replaced. :)

I also have a new beefeater 4 burner here and it's a tin can, can barely roast in it and quality is terrible, half the panels came scratched inside the box.

                • @[Deactivated]: not surprising really, most are made in the same factory Zhongshan Suncook in China, not sure about the beefeater

      • I'd agree the only point I'd make is that the quartz ignition is covered by Weber warranty (which is fantastic), however electronic ignition on the 1200 is far superior

        • It is covered under warranty but many people finding replacing the quartz is a nightmare and often break the new one trying to replace it.

I find my webber q average at everything. Roasts are better over coals, steaks and sausages are better on a regular hot plate BBQ.

Weber q is retired to camping now.

    • Steaks and sausages better on a hot plate?

      • I find the weber just doesn't get hot enough for searing steaks. Sausages I mean who really cares, they are just for kids anyway.

        Just my experience.

        • +1

You might want to poke a paperclip through the gas holes in the u-shaped gas tube to clear them out, and also get a wire brush to clean out the gauze air filter on the outside next to the gas control. Once you've done that, you should be able to get your Q close up to 300C which should be plenty hot enough to sear a steak.

Also, with sausages, I think it's commonly accepted that the drips of fat that fall through and get vaporised by the gas burner add to the flavour. You don't get that on a hot plate.

Try contacting Weber support for other ideas. They are famously helpful.

Once you get your Q singing, I'm sure you'll love it. :)

Not sure what you are doing with your sausages and steaks but the weber is better than a hotplate, especially for thicker steaks.

    • Most people prefer sausages on a griddle. Steaks to most people will be better on a gas grill.

Weber Qs shine at portability, I went for a picnic the other day to Werribee Mansion and about 4 families all had Weber Qs and were bbqing away. Great for campervans and Camping too! People even take them fishing for catch and cook!

Meh not really much of a sale/discount

  • looking on marketplace can see second hand 1200s for $350 with trolley… wonder if I should get that instead

  • Why do some have the side fold down shelves and this doesn't?

    • +1

Q1000 doesn't Q1200 does, the 1200 also has higher lid, temp gauge & electronic ignition

      • ok thanks, mine must be an older 1200 without the gauge

        • or a 100 with plates more likely no?

      • Neither of the Baby Q models (1000 or 1200) has fold down side tables standard AFAIK.

The middle Q and up has them. (2000 and upwards).

Also, only the premium model has ever had the built-in thermometer.

  • Aldi 1 is a perfect alternative.
Has half half plate. Thermo. High lid. Trolley. Side arms. Electronic ignition. $250

  • I know they are meant to be used for lid down cooking however do people just cook like a normal bbq with the lid open? Much difference at all - apart from if you are doing a roast or something.

    • No, lid down, always.

It's a combination of direct heat from the grill, and indirect from convection that makes it cook faster and more evenly. You don't get that with lid open.

  • I got for a friend for 250 after someone posted here on ozbargain some time ago. this is the defacto RRP.

When someone spends hundreds of dollars on something, they are likely to be in a mindset to justify their purchase. Weber barbeques are a classic example of the Emperor's Clothes story. They are not really any better than the Jackeroo barbies Australian people used for decades. They can't 'cook food better' or 'lock in the flavour with special vents'. They are not easy to clean, since they are full of crevices that accumulate gunk. Mine was replaced because the igniter broke. The paint comes off the dome if you use a scourer, they are too small, have non-stick grills instead of safe cast iron, and are really just a fake take on something that did not need reinventing. I sold mine to a hipster on ebay.
