    Qantas?

    Is Velocity still a thing?

    • +2

      yes?

  • I do like the look of this card and have considered it ever since Platinum Edge removed the complementary flight perk, which I think is the highlight of this card. That said, that flight to me anyway has diminished value this year with Covid making travel unpredictable at best. Also probably don’t want to bank a stack of velocity points right now either until Virgins looking in better health.

    • I like the card too but as always the existing member or new applicant but previous member the last 18mths always killed the deal.

I won't get the perks either even if I am upgrading the card.

    • Same here. I still have this card and it's the only way I'm earning Velocity points since March. I've kept my Flybuys and CommBank Awards Points right where they are until things are more certain.

    • I had this card - didn't end up using the flight given the current climate and they also were absolutely useless when trying to initiate a chargeback - send snail mail weeks later to claim I hadn't given them the information and that they had contacted me when I had and they hadn't

  • did they ditch the free flight velocity amex?

    • +1

The 2020 free flight got replaced with a $375 Statement Credit which you can use for any Virgin Australia flight transactions, Velocity Wine Store or Virgin Wines.

      • I prefer that, never got to use the flight. You needed to book with 60 days advance notice, which I never do because I'm all about last minute

        • Where was that 60 day notice from? I used those free flights at least twice and never had any trouble getting flight within a few weeks, there was one booked less than 2 weeks before departure too.

          • @lgacb08: Yeah I was the same- could book virtually whenever, little confused by that comment. I had the card back in 2017/18 though, so unless it has changed recently?

            • +2

@ONEMariachi: ANZ Black FF had the 60 limit on flights afaik, but not this card.

          • @lgacb08: Hmmm… maybe I was wrong and forfeited some flights!

  • Any good deals for those that already have this card?

    • +1

cancel it and wait 18 months

  • Any conditions on how you can use the free domestic return flight?

  • What is the statement credit? How is it used?

    • +3

It's literally just a refund on your account. So if you spend $1,000 on the card, after the statement credit you only need to pay off $700.

It almost pays for the annual fee, then you're getting a flight for $75, is one way of looking at it.

      • and 90k points

  • Not sure "Access to American Express Plan It" is something worth advertising lol

  • +7

For net $75 you are getting 90k Velocity points, free return flight and a 4 lounge passes.

Virgin was sold, get over it people. It ain't going bankrupt.

This is a great deal. Much better than Qantas amex deal.

    • Agree- would've jumped on this but I just got the Qantas Amex CC :(

    • Agreed. Would have got this card but currently holding AMEX Qantas ultimate..

  • Corporate amex card holder still eligible, right?

  • Haven't owned a credit card in years… Looking to get one for the points and travel perks

This and the ANZ black are ones I'm considering, but I wouldn't spend enough to get both incentives

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/595539

Which would you pick and why?

    • +1

If you are only picking one and plan to use it frequently, I’d probably go with the ANZ because Visa is more widely accepted than Amex. The gap has closed tremendously in the past years, but there’s outlayers you could hit where an Amex isn’t going to be accepted. Costco springs to mind. Personally I use my Amex primarily, but I have access to a Visa/MasterCard too that I need to occasionally use.

If you are happy for non Amex purchases to go on a debit card those times you can’t use the Amex, then I guess compare the perks. If you aren’t just farming signup perks, then in terms of major differences between the cards, this one gives you a domestic return flight on Virgin annually which can be great and could easily exceed the annual years fee alone. Besides that, this card is aligned to Virgin and earns points for Velocity, the ANZ at a glance is a Qantas earner. If you have a preference to a carrier, weigh that up.

If you don’t particularly care about which carrier you use, then I would jump onto both carriers booking system and plan a flight you may be likely to take and work out how many points you need with each to book solely using points, then do the maths as to how much you need to spend on each card to earn the relevant points for a free flight.

I have considered getting this Amex card myself as it has a high earn rate for Velocity points and I would in most years use the complimentary flight. I’m holding off until Covid eases but.

      • Thank you for the detailed answer. Appreciate it :)

Certainly keen on the free annual flight. However my concern was with how widely I can use the Amex

Do you know how often these offers come up?

        • Ones with bonus frequent flyer points pop up all the time. I’d imagine statement credit is less frequent.

  • +1

Pretty good deal - my amex 18mths was up last month so might take this one up.
    Surprised not more upvotes.

    • +1

Agreed, surprised too.. probably because it’s Velocity not Qantas.

  • Anyone know if you can book a flight in someone else's name and does the flight have to be direct or Amex allows transits to your destination?

  • Hey guys - what's the easiest way to double check on the 12/18 month period thing?

I'm 'pretty sure', but would like to check.

    • You could always check something like creditsavvy - AMEX are usually fairly quick at reporting the close date (some banks are terrible).
Or you could call them and find out when it was closed.
I usually put all the various banks in gmail calendar so I know when I can re-apply.

  • Looks good - Approved in seconds!

  • If I am an additional Amex card holder does this count as "currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia"?

    • +1

Best to check with AMEX but from some quick googling, being a supplementary card holder on someone else’s account doesn’t affect eligibility for special offers. They only care about the primary cardholder.

  • How does the complimentary domestic flight work? Are there's any restrictions on it?
