Sony Alpha A6400 (Body Only) $999 ($799 After Sony Cashback) @ Parramatta Cameras

600

Seems like a decent price for this camera - cheaper than the recent CameraPro deal.

Sony cashback form is here.

  • why is it getting so cheap

  • +2

Damn good price, I paid $1200 with cashback last year in August :(

    • +6

      And never used it?

      • +3

I guess 'craving' drives a car, not DSLR.

  • +1

price match with sony first, decide later

    • $100 extra credit if they do and you can pay with Amex and this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/598775

      • Sweet

      • I believe the extra credit is valid at the Sony Store (also at Westfield Parramatta), not Parramatta Cameras.

        • Thus price match with Sony and buy it from Sony using an enrolled AMEX to get the Amex credit.

        • +1

Yes, as per the context of the conversation.

          • @snuke: Does Sony price match this vendor? Anyone tried?

          • @snuke: Ah sorry didn't get the full conversation. My apologies.

    • +1

True. I called up Sony the other day and they said that their price match has no expiration dates

    • how do you price match? is it only available during weekdays or something? because I can see the "request price match" under the item but there's no link or button to click apart from add to cart

      • +1

you need to click into the item, then there’s like a request price match form to fill out

        • Thanks mate!

  • recommendations for a lenses? mainly for portraits but also out door scenery

    • +4
      • Samyang 12mm 2.0
      • sony 35mm 1.8
      • Sigma 60mm 2.8
      • sony 70-350mm
      • Sony 35 f1.8 is a great lens
Samyang 12 is also a really good lens, though much more specialised

I also have the sony 50 f1.8 - great for portraits but not much use for scenery.

The 35 lives on my camera most of the time

      • +4

        Sigma 16mm f1.4

    • +5

      Sony 18-105 f4

      • I second this. bit heavy & not great for low light photos but all-rounder travel lens & good for video

        • I would recommend the Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS over the Sony 18-104 f4.
The 18-135 is 100g lighter, in most tests it is sharper, it is 1/2 a stop better at the wide end and only 1 stop more at the telephoto end, longer telephoto (202mm vs 157mm) and you don't have to deal with the electronic zoom using battery.

    • +1

The Sony 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 is also worth considering with a small camera like this - it's lighter than the 18-105mm f/4 and has a slightly longer zoom, at the cost of having a variable aperture. digiDirect has both for $704.65 at the moment.

      • Agreed - this is my go to travel lens for the camera and it's great. No point loading such a small portable camera up with a massive heavy lens.

I also second the 35mm f1.8. It is a fantastic lens. Makes me look like I can take a half decent photo every now and then

    • +2

      Sigma 16mm f/1.4

    • +4

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for scenery (Full frame equivalent 24mm)
Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for portraits (Full frame equivalent 84mm)
Both of these do not have optical stabilisation but are very nice sharp lenses - there is also a 30mm (FF 45mm) in this range.

The Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS APS-C is also a very nice multipurpose lens (FF 27mm-202mm) and it does have optical stabilisation.

    • Hard to recommend one lens for portrait and landscape photography, unless you go with a zoom lens.. The new Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 looks very interesting.

Otherwise the Sigma trio come highly recommended, I can personally recommend the 30mm 1.4.

    • Tamron 17-70. After a while you'll know what primes you want/need.

    • +2

Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 the do it all lens for travel and portraiture
      Sigma 56mm f/1.4 portraits
Samsung 12mm f/2.0 UWA landscapes and astro
Sony 24mm f/1.8 (second hand) or Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for environmental portraits

Then you're pretty much set apart from spare batteries.

For flash, there was a godox tt350 that was popular several years ago, not sure if it's still the best option.

      • Sony 24mm/f1.8 is the only Sony lens I have right now. Bought it about 7 years ago in Japan and still loving it.

        • Yeah it's expensive, but it's so versatile with its close focusing capabilities and SOOC picture quality. A perfect single lens solution imo.

  • Great deal - fantastic camera. Tempted to get a second one at this price, though I have no use for two!

    • Same here. With my growing collection of lenses it almost makes sense. Almost.

      • What will make it perfect?

  • +1

Would have jumped on if I had an AMEX offer!

  • Damn this is an unreal price with Sony Store price match + AMEX offer + Sony Cashback - $699!! I got mine last week at CameraPro for $898.17 (inc. delivery + PayPal fees) with Sony Cashback.

  • +1

    Says $1099 for me

    • +1

Ah, you're right! They've bumped the price up by $100. I was seriously thinking of it at $999, but not at $1099 (then minus the $200 cashback). Too bad!
I was thinking of matching this with the Sony 18-135mm lens, which is apparently very good; plus sigma 60mm F2.8 for portraits, and possibly Sony 20mm F2.8 pancake for a compact carry (like X100 or GRIII).
Currently using MFT, but was attracted to the idea of a corner viewfinder, which I find more comfortable to use than a centre viewfinder.

  • Back to $1099?

  • Any idea, how long it takes to get the Sony cashback on Avg?

  • Damn, would have bought this at $999. Hope they reconsider.

  • Any battery grip recommended for this camera?

  • Is anyone kind enough to share a screenshot of the $999 in their cart? Even better if it's a screenshot of a Sony price match. TIA!

  • I'm new to these type of cameras… Can you geotag your photos with them?

    • +1

It's a pain in the butt if my experience with the a7ii/a7iii is anything to go by.
No built in gps (battery drain anyway) and requires connection to your phone. Obviously you can do this in post. Google photos does this automatically to some degree if you have location history on.

      • +1

Thanks mate, appreciate the reply here

  • +3

Contacted Sony before the price increase. They have agreed to price match it @ $999

    Proof : https://imgur.com/a/yFeith1

    You're Welcome

    • I use the proof to do price match. Sony rejected me. "We only rely on the current price of the item on the website at a specific time the unit was requested for price match."

    • Does Sony beat the price or just matches it?

  • +1

great price, I am just holding off for a Fuji announcement of new X-E4 camera….

  • OP: If there has been a significant increase in price since it was posted, please mark it as expired. Do not increase the price displayed on the title as it misrepresents the votes

    • Makes sense - noted.

      • Thanks for understanding

  • I just requested a price match, Sony now offers $1099, same price on the paramatta cameras.
I cant see the point of price matching, extra effort for nothing,

    am I missing something?

    • +1

      Amex deal - spend $600 get $100

      • I see, I dont have Amex cards!
Someone else pointed out do the price match and think later, this is not a bad idea.
        Thanks.

        • +1

yea the price match never expires lol

so if parammatta decides to up the price even more, your Sony cart will still be $1099

          • @skido: I take my hat off to you guys, I have learnt so many tricks in Ozbargain :)

  • +2

ripper deal - got it for 42% off rrp, stacking price match, amex and cashback LOL thanks OP

    • wait it should be 50% off - 999 minus 100 Amex minus 20 cashback = $699

      RRP $1399

      • Me too. Upgrading from an ancient Nex 6. Couldn't say no at this price.

        • did you get order confirmation email? I just got one saying they’re reviewing my order

  • Not sure if I should be posting it here.
I do have a price matched A6400 in my cart for $999.

edit: I price matched before Paramatta Cameras increased their price.

PM me if you are interested.

    • Just curious, how did you do the pricematch online? I couldn't find a pricematch button on sony's website.

      • You have to sign in to your Sony Store Account and chose the correct model.
Click the green "Request a price match" button under "Add to cart" and click "Request a price match" switch button.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/36476/86479/sony_price…

        • Thanks thats good to know. How quickly did it take for you to receive confirmation of the price match?

          • @Mahogany Granger: Rejection was in an hr or 2 and no response to reply with screenshot.
But successful price matches were next morning since my requests were after hrs.
I was going to post this deal on 24st morning, had everything typed but just got distracted waiting for confirmation email.

  • Got an email after placing my Sony order:

We're Currently Reviewing And Processing Your Order So Keep An Eye Out For An Email Or SMS From Us Updating Your Order Status.

Should Our Customer Service Team Require More Information, They May Contact You Shortly.

Probably cuz the discount is too high so they gotta review it…

    • +1

I got the same email. Pretty sure that's just standard.

  • Noob question: Does the lens help more with photography or videos?

I want to use this camera mainly for YouTube videos: sitting down and talking to the screen.

Would the lens increase the quality at all?

  • Thanks OP! Mine just arrived. @skido have you received yours yet?

  • +1

Ordered mine yesterday via Sony Online - Price-matching Parramatta Cameras - worked out to be $799 after the $300 Cashback (Sony + AMEX).

Will go well with the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 from Digidirect! :)

    • Nice one indeed. I wished Tamron had this when I bought the 6400 last year.

      • Yep! Decided to shell out a bit more for the Tamron and probably won’t to carry another lens with me in most situations.

    • A very noob question with my first proper camera.

Would the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 set at 17mm be able to shoot similar to Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens? A close up portrait video with blurry background?
