  • How do these Sennheiser gaming headsets compare to a HD58X?

    • +2

If you’re listening to heaps of music, I would get the 58x.
But if you’re using these mainly for gaming, then I would go for the 550.

(I’ll be using the 550 as an example, but it should be fairly similar throughout their gaming range, especially the sound signature and budget part.)

      • Both are said to be open back, but it looks like the 550 adopts a semi-open design in comparison to the pure open that the 58x has. With that in mind, the soundstage of the 58x should be better than the 550. Although, the imaging should be about the same for both headphones, especially with the 7.1 that Sennheiser boasts with the 550.

      • The sound signature for the 550 is more of an aggressive V-shape (party-party!), while the 58x is balanced with a slight perk at its bass frequencies (dark-warm). Some would argue that the 550 is more fun but more fatiguing, and the 58x is boring and disappointing, but it’s all personal preference.

      • The 550 is pretty easy to run at only 28 Ω, while the 58x runs at 150 Ω. Although you don’t need an amp for either, it is recommended to get an amp/dac for the 58x to get the full potential of the headphones, as you’re able to squeeze every bit of power off it (if you’ve got a bad soundcard).

      • One thing to keep in mind is the budget as well. The 550 comes with the whole package (headphone + mic + dongle for amp/dac), while the 58x only comes with the headphones. This will require you to purchase an external mic and amp/dac (if need be) along with the headphone, which is an uppercut to your wallet if you’re not prepped for it.

With that being said, I’m not an audiophile so I’m hoping that someone can weigh in on this with a better, more informed opinion than me.
