I currently use OneNote which is free. Any one has any experience with both that can recommend one over the other?

    • Onenote is better IMO and free of course. I am currently using Evernote and have been for about 9 months

I am trying to wiggle out from under the Google/MS ecosystems

I am no fan of SaaS so am pondering what to do next :)

      • Can you backup OneNote ? (Not sync)
        Apple notes only syncs

    • how do you get onenote for free?

    • +1

I MUCH prefer the ON organisational paradigm, but Evernote will capture web stuff somewhat better. It also has watch folders, which ON STILL doesn't have. EN is better for PDFs, but ON is OK with them.

I used EN for donkey's years, but have been on ON for a few years now and it's fine.

  • -2

If $13 or even $25 is for life I might pay… But yearly…hmm.

What is the best substitute for Evernote? Free of course. I just need synchronisation mostly and nice interface not google spreadsheet.
Also ability to take online web into offline page is good too

  • tbh they each have their strengths & weaknesses. Evernote is great across platforms, and is good for capturing documents & images. I used it heaps with my house build etc.
Onenote is good for formatting, and I find the way it's organised to work well for work related things.

    • +1

Onenote is great for capturing documents too. I store a copy of all my manuals for the house equipment in it.
      Cross platform too

  • I read that OneNote doesn't have the web clipper function working in android is this true?
With Evernote as long Evernote installed I can "share" any website to Evernote and it will clip it for offline view later.

  • Does it work with Apple?

    • -3

      No

      • +2

evernote does work with apple.. lol

    • Try Bear app, pretty decent if you have apple ecosystem

      • Thanks gonna try it:)

  • One note is great but sucks for code snippets.
I switched off Evernote 5 years ago after using it since 2009. I just didn’t see much innovation coming from ever note to justify the cost

These days I just use either Apple notes, or Joplin free markdown editor and sync to Dropbox.

    • Have you used both ? Can you highlight main differences or which one is better for what ?

I am using Evernote as online shelf mostly to keep all documents, data, movies watchlist, places to visit, warranty receipts etc. in different notebook's .. I downloaded Notion, but it seems bit complex and i didn't cared a lot, though it seems good.

      • +1

I agree Notion is bit complex compared to Evernote. But with Notion, you get unlimited synced devices whereas Evernote is limited to two. That was the main reason for me to pick Notion.

  • tried to use 28 degree card but it said unable to process the payment.

Connected to Argentina and it comes out to 220 Argentina pesos… Which is about $3.20 for the annual plan. But can't process payment though.

Tried to pay with Amex and ING but both came up with a payment error.

    • argentina is chargin like 60% tax on digital purchases, or at least that´s what they charge me for a netflix plan, and i am using a southamerican bank card.

  • if you upgrade to this
and then switch back to free evernote
do you have to delete stuff?

    • +2

Nope .. data which is uploaded once, remains there forever, I upgraded to premium in start when I had heaps of data to upload in multiple folders, once done I switched back to free.

  • I don't like ongoing auto renewed yearly fees however cheap they are as these are often forgotten and a waste if no longer using the service. I prefer one off payments in advance.

  • +1

I did this last year, but after a year of the cheaper Turkish rate they’ve figured out that I have an Australian credit card. It won’t let me renew with any Australian issued cards (even with VPN). I tried being cheeky and contacted support - who told me that they could convert my account to being based in Australia and unlock card payments.

For now, I’m staying on the free plan. Don’t plan to get premium until all the features from the “legacy” Evernote are reintroduced. Have also been trialling OneNote - which is pretty good except for lack of PDF searching and is a bit clunkier in general.

    • Have also been trialling OneNote - which is pretty good except for lack of PDF searching and is a bit clunkier in general.

Yep, this is my main reason for keeping Evernote - I email PDFs straight from a scanner to Evernote, where I can at least search and modify them in Evernote.

can't do that in OneNote - there's no 'special' email address to send notes (only whitelisting 'from' addresses which won't work for the scanner), and the whole way it handles PDFs suck

      • Yeah. I’ve tried quite a few alternative apps but keep returning to Evernote. That cycle is broken now with the new version (especially limitations on exporting data).

  • +1

Don't use Evernote. They updated their privacy policy to say "any evernote employee can read your notes" I think they relaxed this but still, it isnt hard to imagine what they do with your data. Onenote too.

I recommend Standard Notes, the free version doesn't have formatting but works on all devices etc, paid version has proper formatting etc

  • +1

I used to be a fan of Evernote until one day it wouldn't allow me to uninstall. Now I'm using Notebook, free and with a beautiful interfere.

  • Didn't work for me, but was given the option to downgrade to Evernote Plus (50% off premium) when I tried to cancel Premium:

    https://www.evernote.com/subscriptions/manage?offer=ctxt_can…

Downgrading from Premium to Plus I will lose the following features (the first of which is the only one likely to impair the functionality significantly for me):

    • Search for text in PDFs, Office documents, and other attachments
    • Annotate PDFs
    • Scan and digitize business cards
    • Access previous versions of notes
    • Switch between multiple accounts
    • Chat live with Evernote Support

    Per https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209005157-Compar…

  • Nope. Didn't work for me.

I connected to Turkey VPN and comes us with TRY 52.49, but when I enter the payment details it comes up with :
"Sorry, we were unable to process your payment. Please check your payment information or try a different card."

Tried with Amex, MC and Visa (all of them has international currency) same issue.

  • No one talking about how Evernote completely rewrote their application and some basic functionality doesn't work any more amongst other dramas? I mean I understand why they did what they did but they really butchered it. Granted I've never paid for it. I am trying out Joplin (open source) and will throw them a donation if it suits.

There's plenty of discussion on the Evernote subreddit.

You can't forget your first love … thats the case with evernote users.

  • I don't mind paying for it but is it good?

  • Anyone use Joplin or other Evernote alternative that can confirm it can web clipped whole webpage (not just the link) on Android mobile phone/tablets?

  • Getting a dedicated email that you can forward stuff to for storage is pretty handy
    - (ie forwarding work emails for offline review/actioning/archiving, or just general storage outside of your inbox)
Mainly for those inclined towards productivity (see Getting Things Done by David Allen)

  • Does not work, Same netflix type of saga. cards This is the message "Sorry, we were unable to process your payment. Please check your payment information or try a different card." I got when trying to pay using 28Degress, ING, citibank and Macquarie bank.

  • Has anyone been able to get this to work and get the deal as stated in TRY?

I keep getting currency RON instead of TRY when i connect VPN as country Turkey via Cyberghost VPN

Edit: Same issue here as well, card payment not working: "Sorry, we were unable to process your payment. Please check your payment information or try a different card."

    • Same can’t get it to work now. I think they are onto OZB!

  • Problem with Apple notes is you can’t back them up.

  • Not even sure why someone sane would even pay $90 for a note taking app. When you get whole Office 365 home for same price that also include OneNote. I found no such feature in EN that’s justifies it.

    • EN is quite a lot different from anything in the O365 suite (and ON is free anyway) so it's a completely invalid comparison, as anyone who had used any of the apps mentioned would know.

  • Joplin is free. It's as private as you want it to be, as you host it yourself if you want to sync (need a cloud storage folder). And it seems to have a motivated user base who are contributing to its development.

  • problem is i dont know any other similar app that has web clipper offline function ? i use this alot with evernote

  • Chimot, I've had some tentative success with Joplin's OFFLINE Webclip - it certainly captures texts and links. It might be worth a try. (It might take a live connection to download all the images etc.)

    • oh really? thanks yes i understand it will need internet to clip the page but then we can view later offline (thats how it should work)
