Could potentially price match at Officeworks?

    • +1

Officeworks refused me over the phone, saying its on back order and no stock.

Will support JB this time lol

      • +1

May be should go and check in store and then say beat the price. Or first confirm the stock and beat the price

        • +6

cbb travelling to Officeworks just for $5 saving lol

          • +1

@skido: it's not the $5 saving, but getting it NOW then waiting till March to get it.

            • -1

@POWER1: true, but I dont need one urgently

              • @skido: when do you need it? Is that gonna be sometime when other people also need it?

            • @POWER1: mine already shipped.. didn’t take long and much earlier than the expected date

        • +4

Keep in mind that these hard drives use SMR instead of CMR/PMR.

    • +6

Small modular reactors sounds power enough to me, thanks for the head up tho

    • +2

      And they are unshuckable.

    • How do you know?

      • +1

He is right. The USB-C connector is directly soldered on the HDD controller board. This is the case with pretty much all WD portable drives.

        • I was replying to ijnkongo25. How does he know that they are SMR drives?

    • +12

Thanks for pointing this out, didn't know there was new technology in HDD as I haven't bought one in nearly 10 years.

For others, in a nutshell - SMR HDDs are higher density disks which provides best 'bang for buck', but has slower write speeds compared to conventional PMR HDDs.
SMR may not be suitable for RAID 6 or environments where constant writing is required, but are fine for those just wanting a 'regular external HDD'.

      Source: https://www.minitool.com/news/shingled-magnetic-recording-dr…

      • …and apparently are much slower under some circumstances (such as random writes)

      • +5

Would you really setup RAID with portable HDDs? Also, 4TB portable HDDs, they are all SMR (or generally mixed CMR+SMR, basically some CMR so when you run benchmark software, the performance doesn't look so bad - cheating basically, but they all do that).

Also, WD portable HDDs, you expect them to be shuckable?

    • +1

Name 1 4TB portable HDD that is not SMR….
Most, if not all of them are SMR based HDDs, and that's why these could be sold at this price.

    • Thanks for the reminder that these WD drives have Shingles

      • Have multiple Seagate portable 4TBs, they are also SMR. It's been like that for years. 3TB+ portable HDDs, they are all SMR based. Some 2TB ones might still be CMR.

        • My old model Seagate 5TB portables haven't exhibited any SMR characteristics. Pretty good price for the time too (around $170, three years ago).

          • +2

@Jabba the Hutt: Honestly, as per Seagate Web site, all 3TB+ portables ARE SMR based. Seagate might have allocated a portion for CMR, but it is really a SMR drive.

It's more your usage pattern doesn't make you notice it is SMR. Honestly, knowing a drive is SMR, I wouldn't constantly write close to 5TB of data to that drive to get the SMR feeling. It doesn't make sense. Since when do most people have constant need to write/update 5TB worth of new data on a regular basis? Also, talk about slow, our NBN is slow.

            • @netsurfer: They threw that list together post WD Red controversy. Their original model 5TB portable was superceded by then. I've five of them in total, and at various times they've been through heavy random and sequential writes in a near-full state. Their performance stands in pretty sharp contrast with my 4TB WD My Passport Ultra which has been a dog with fleas; later learned it was an SMR drive (confirmed by the presence of TRIM support in CrystalDiskInfo).

Ultimately can't say for sure that they aren't, but nor have I seen any evidence they are. My similarly old 3TB Toshiba also seems SMR-free.

              • @Jabba the Hutt: Seagate uses CMR + SMR to trick benchmark software and the impression I've got is that there is a fixed portion that's CMR, which is used for commonly accessed data. Problem is, with the random write speed of HDD being so slow in general, it is hard to correctly detect it, especially if the test was conducted using a benchmark software.

Looking at TRIM on Crystal DiskInfo is not a good indication. My seagate 4TB is so old, I doubt Seagate would implement TRIM over USB at the time. To be frank, if an HDD has SMR, you want it to support TRIM.

        • +2

ahh. bring back the days when SMR / CMR wasnt a thing.
          it was bliss

  • These good enough for PS5/Xbox?

    • same question here.

      Just got a PS5…

      • Only for ps4 games. Ps5 games only run off the internal drive at this stage. Plus this isn't an SSD

        • Thanks….yes I have a huge backlog.

Is there any particular size/brand that runs better when paired with the PS5?

          • +2

@mg_k: An external SSD will be faster (less loading times) than any HDD. You won’t get any difference between different HDD brands

            • +1

@FireRunner: or I suppose unless you were to get a 7200rm drive or something

      • -2

This 4tb portable will work with the PS5 for PS4 games:

        https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/seagate-4tb-game-drive-for-pl…

Available for $10 cheaper at TGGC.

        • +1

          I'm seeing $169?

          • @highwind: Just an option for a PS5 certified hard drive.

            • @jamba: But didnt you mention $10 cheaper?

              • @BargainBuddy: $159 at good guys commercial. Sorry I meant the PS5 certified drive was $10 cheaper at commercial compared to normal TGG.

    • You can install last gen (PS4/Xbox One) games on an external drive such as this but it won’t work for current gen (PS5/Xbox Series) games

      • +1

I think you can store Xbox series x on a external hard drive but can’t play them off that. I’m not sure if you can store ps5 games on one tho

        • You are right, and you can't use it as a temp ps5 games either

    • I use this exact one on my PS5 for PS4 games, ripper deal

      • +1

Does it need to be formatted specifically for PS4? Or can I still save pc files onto it along with PS4 games?

        • +1

Yea it did need to be formatted. But I have never unplugged it from my PS5 since having it so can't answer the adding pc files to it

        • Should be able to use for PC aswell, just needs formatting to FAT32 or something.

          • @chyawala: Not true, when you connect to PS4/PS5 the drive will need to be formatted to special format that is only readable from that specific console. The PC will not be able to read/write to the drive. If you reformat it back to a standard format you’ll lose all the PS4 game data

      • Hey for the ps4 games playing off the portable HD how do they run? And the load times?

        • PS4 games on PS4/Pro or PS5? You do get faster loading on PS5 due to a faster CPU, but it is still limited to 2.5" HDD speed. PS5 doesn't have QuickResume like XBox Series X|S. QuickResume does help (if you do switch between a number of games).

          • @netsurfer: Thanks mate. So pretty much not worth it and should wait for a ssd instead.

      • Does it only come with the USBC to USBC cable only

  • waited a long time to get one and so glad to see this deal pops up. Thanks OP. Bought one.

  • +2

    Bought 2 - ridiculously cheap.

  • Wow! Great price - thanks @varvaz.

  • +2

Shuckable? I need a larger capacity 2.5" drive

    • I don't think WD portable HDDs are shuck-able. Whilst Seagates are

    • Pretty sure all WD 2.5” portable drives are non-shuckable

    • +2

      Not shuckable.

I just got Officeworks to price beat a couple of these for me over the phone.

    • +3

4TB 2.5" HDDs are usually 15mm+ z height, so they rarely fit into devices that smaller capacity 2.5" drives fit into.

Just a heads up incase you didn't know that already and planned on shucking a different 4tb 2.5" for a laptop or something.

      • Thanks for the heads up, didn't know

        • Yeah it sucks. I'm still a fan of using HDDs as a secondary/gaming drive and I believe the highest capacity drive that fits into <10mm z height (most laptops) has been 2TB for the last decade.

If someone else reads this and knows of 2.5" HDDs greater than 2TB that fit into most laptops and doesn't cost a massive premium, could you please let me know?

  • Very cheap.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Don't forget to buy e-gift card(5%), the total amount comes down to $98.79

    • How? Can you pls elaborate?

      • +4

        E-gift card from Suncorp Bank(5%), Shopback(3%)

    • How did ya do that?

      • Magic! There is a bunch of websites that sell discounted gift cards.

    • +24

I don’t like buying e-gift cards for back order items because if your order gets cancelled, then you’re stuck with gift cards

  • Bought one, thanks OP.

  • +1

If this is to be delivered around march, what would be the latest I could cancel it to get a full refund?

    • +1

I think anytime as long as it hasn’t shipped yet

    • +1

there is no option to cancel on the member's page… not sure if you can?

    • Mine just came today so if you haven't received yours yet, hopefully they come soon.
It did say March delivery on JB's website when I ordered.

  • +6

    Come on AMAZON!!!!

  • Anybody got any info on the actual transfer or data rate/speed on this particular model?

  • +5

Dimensions 110mm x 81.6mm x 20.96mm, so expect it to be 2x thicker than in the featured photos, top of the page.

The photos you see after you scroll down, in "Media" are probably more accurate. It's thick.

The shit stores can get away with…

  • What would you guys recommend

This 4TB USB drive on a XBOX Series X or use a external self powered hard drive?

    • Portable HDD. Series X has QuickResume and internal SSD. Games you want really fast speed, put them on internal SSD.

External self powered hard drive, are you going to buy 7200 rpm, CMR based HDDs?

      • Well yes I guess a big 8-10TB or even a 4-5tb self powered external hard drive are all 7200 army they?

Would this be better then this wd 4TB portable? Will it run they same as in turn off when Xbox is off etc?

Also guys if I buy this portable drive from JB, what form of payment is best not to get charged until it’s sent?

        • If you want to run it permanently on and keep it in the external enclosure, make sure you get a 5400 rpm drive. Otherwise it will be HHOOOOOTTTTT

          • @annarchon: I’m not putting it inside the Xbox just hooking it up via USB but was wondering if I should go a self powered 7200 drive over a portable USB powered 5400 drive like this one posted

  • Thanks OP.Bought 1

  • Thanks op picked up one hope they don't run out of stock.

  • Damn, I literally just paid 150 for this a week ago at Umart. Oh well, shit happens.

    • +1

At least you don't need to wait for more than one month to enjoy it

  • darn.. got my self the seagate 4TB backup plus for $126 at JB. darn…. could hv shaved $20
