  • Seems to have the odd bit of sugar in it

    • +1

Char siu suppose to have sweet taste.

  • +6

This is good, Grab some pork scotch fillet (which is the shoulder of the pig) then marinate it in the sauce for a few hrs then put in oven.
    Makes the perfect char siu.

Lot's of youtube videos on the method example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65qfGtZZhOo

    • Actually had this tonight. But in the pan instead of oven.
      Very noice

      • Did the sauce burn? (Though I guess that's the best part, the burnt fatty bits.)

        • +1

          Causes cancer

        • Nah. Cook on a lower heat and it's all good

    • +1

agree, slab of pork, a jar of this, plus many hours in the slow cooker.

    • Restaurants must be using food colouring liquid to make char siu red

      • +2

Yep they do use red colouring

  • +2

4520mg of sodium per 100g eeep

    • +4

What's wrong with that? That's under 5%… would be more concerned with the sugar content (57+%)…

    • +2

      You don't drink it. It's a marinade.

  • Is this the one that tastes like hoisin sauce but is thicker?

    • +11

Hoisin = soy beans, vinegar, sugar, garlic, starch, and various spices

Char Siew sauce = part hoisin sauce plus honey or sweetener, rice wine and Chinese five spice powder.

So yeah, they do taste somewhat similar to each other. You can 'craft' char siew sauce yourself assuming you have all the ingredients listed above.

      • I did not know this. Thanks for sharing.

    Lee very lucky man

  • +1

Works great on the chicken wings too!

  • +1

This with cubed pork belly pieces 😋

    • Cooked how? Oven, pan fry or in a stir fry?

      • smoker bra

        • +1

as opposed to a non-smoker bra?

      • +2

Oven until you start seeing burnt bits.
        Gotta get that char!

        • Then finish it off with a honey glaze.

        • I love crispy pork belly but figured the wet mix might stop that.
          Sounds like a winner though.

          • +1

@DarwinBoy: Cut the skin off & throw under the grill for some side crunch 😉

I love this stuff for Chinese BBQ pork.
    Hack tip#1
Buy the cheap boneless pork at the local discount meat place - I usually buy about 3kgs. I then chop the pork in to portions as big as a fist and them marinate it overnight in this sauce.
I then roast it in oven at 160c being careful to turn the portions over over and reapply more sauce at the 25-30 min mark. I then take it out after approx 10 - 15 mins later, allow to cool then slice up and apportion out in 500g lots, put in ziplok bags (you'll get 6 from 3 kgs) and place in freezer. When you want to do a quick stirfry, you've got these meat bags on tap to add to stirfry cutting down on prep massively,. Just take out and thaw and add to stirfry - east as

    • Love it. Will have to save and try it one day!

    • Just tried mine using your recipe but with ribs and air fryer instead, turned out perfect! Thumbs up!!!

Love the recipe I found for Char Siu beef sliders with Asian slaw.

Oriental. Jesus what is this, 1950?

      OccidentalBargain would be awesome!

What's the most offensive word we could use about Scandinavians to balance things out?

    • -4

What's wrong with using Orient, that's derived from ancient Latin word (Oriens) for East?

Should we ban Latin language, pretend there was no history, cancel everything some people don't like?

      • +2

You seem to be getting a little triggered there mate. It's an outdated word that hasn't been used in a while. It's out of place. Kind of like how you don't use Shakespearean English.

Nobody is calling for the banning of anything. Stop assuming things.

        • -1

Hasn't been used in a while? Better tell that to Oriental Motor Company. Every one of their motors is stamped proudly with "Oriental". Japanese founded. Japanese owned. Japanese run. Get them to change their name if you are correct.

They are a significant player in the 3D printing boom.

          https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6xED3yWXTJc

Not exactly shy about using the word 'oriental', are they?

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Because a brand and words used in everyday vernacular are the same thing.

            • -1

@Munki: Well, explain how Oriental NEMA Stepper motors would be discussed in the 1950s.

You should check orientalmotor.com, you know, the URL that must have existed in the 1950s, lol.

You completely exaggerated for melodramatic effect.

              • +3

@[Deactivated]: Mate what the hell are you going on about? The term "oriental" was used to refer to "east Asian". It's no longer really a relevant term since the adoption of "east Asian" being used instead. Using it in a description for an item for sale in 2021 makes it seem out of place.

Or do you just not acknowledge that the English language evolves and terms stop getting used in favour of new ones?

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Wow, I was being sarcastic when I asked if you looked to the 50s for advice about language but you just doubled down

                • -1

@GrueHunter: Was that back when Munki hypocritically blasphemed and offended Christians and you chose not to get triggered because it didn't suit your narrative?

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]:

What's wrong with using Orient, that's derived from ancient Latin word (Oriens) for East?

Do "I can say n*gger because I have a black friend and it's from the Latin word for "black"" for an encore.

East of where? Ask yourself why that's your starting position. Ask yourself why you can't use any of the hundreds of other words that different Asian cultures use to describe themselves. (If you need a clue, it's because you believe Europe is the centre of the universe, and you think all Asian peoples are the same.)

Better tell that to Oriental Motor Company.

The one founded in 1885 and established in 1950? Do you often look to the 19th century or the first half of the 20th for guidance about contemporary cultural politics? Do you often ask Japanese people for advice about English? People who live in a country described by the UN as "profoundly racist"?

(A pre-emptive "downvote away" - there's nothing quite like watching triggered white dudes thrash about and whining while simultaneously claiming it's everybody else that's fragile.)

            • @GrueHunter: This is a sauce bargain. The triggering is entirely your snowflake side. I am too busy being aloof and tone deaf in white privilege. Over marinade.

              (Nice reductio ad n****rum, BTW.)

        • Sorry mate, but there are too many people around just looking to ban/cancel what they don't like - and it usually starts with words.

Fair enough for considering "orient" being outdated, but it's far from that. Maybe in Australia where New Zealand is geographically our "orient", but for Europe, Africa and Americas, referring to parts of Asia as Orient is common and certainly not outdated.

          • @Jef Tino:

but there are too many people around just looking to ban/cancel what they don't like - and it usually starts with words.

And it ends with stuff like banning slavery, and letting women vote.

Today I learned Aussies must have written the Wikipedia article on "Orient":

"The term oriental is often used to describe objects from the Orient. However, given its Eurocentric connotations and shifting, inaccurate definition through the ages, it is widely considered to be an offensive term when used to refer to people of East Asian and South East Asian descent."

            • @GrueHunter: Can you help me get Norsca taken off the shelves? It's so Scandophobic and lessens my experience. I mean, what is this, the eighties in a pine forest? It's not all saunas and birch twig thrashing, you know!

    Will be buying many.

  • So is this quite a sweet marinade? Just bought a side of pork ribs to be slow cooked in the webber with a bit of apple wood for some smoke. Not a fan of the overly sweet ribs… Anyone got a good recipe for not overly sweet ribs?
