  • What are the uses for this?

      Computing

      • Yeah expected that. I guess my question applies to the power hungry, noise and size of an old desktop compared to a laptop. I understand a modern system needed for gaming or graphic workstation but this old thing has no relevance in my mind…maybe it doesn't need relevance in my mind?

        • It's small form factor, which is ideal for integration with machinery and equipment that requires a computing component.

I hate laptops. They are too small both screen wise and keyboard wise, i wouldnt want to be watching movies on one. I buy PCs like this (for about half the price) whenever i need one for browsing, YouTube, some light video editing etc, and yeah i would never want a laptop at home. Not to mention laptops are way dearer.

Laptops with desktop level grunt absolutely exist.

Laptops with desktop level grunt, that you don't want to sound like a hurricane, are in the thousands of dollars.

Also, as someone who manages whole fleets of PC's desktop size components do 'randomly' die less often, and when they do, can be repaired in minutes, dIY. Not days, via a technician and 4 hours to India explaining you've already diagnosed it….

Laptops with DVD or bluray drives are also rare these days if you're the type to watch your movies via PC, or even just rip your current collection.

You don't need to care about laptop battery health/24-7 AC connection degrading it.

You usually get full featured BIOS in case your OS isn't happy with UFEI.

          More ports to plug into.

And you just drown in lady attention rocking a desktop.

          Etc etc.

(Note: at least one of these may not be true)

          • @MasterScythe:

            More ports to plug into.

It's nice to know it has 2x PS/2 ports and a DB9 serial, in case you ever need them :-)

            • @bargaino: Ps2, maybe not.

Db9 serial is very relevant, and only becoming more so, as students and hobbyists learn microcontroller stuff (like Arduino). Very common in any sort of tech class in school.

The demand for "good" USB to serial ports is going up massively; and unfortunately very few exist.

Most people USE an arduino to act as a serial programmer; lol.

              • @MasterScythe:

                microcontroller stuff (like Arduino).

Arduino is TTL, but DB9 is +/-12V RS232.
Easier to use a USB-to-TTL-serial dongle, no? It never even occurred to me to use the DB9 port.

                • @bargaino: True, Arduino is a bad example of needing rs232.

But real world examples I've needed in the past year:

                  Programming my cars ECU Rom.

                  Updating my 3D printers bootloader.

                  'Unlocking' my drone's rc transmitter.

Sure, they're all nerd specific; but that's 3 very different subsets where it was relevant.

Car nerd, maker nerd, RC nerd.

They're more useful than you think.
Usually, so long as the device is self-powered, the rs232 is just more reliable.

I like using it to monitor boot sequences on IoT devices :)

    • These make good HTPCs although the EliteDesk in particular is a bit larger than you might like.
      (Still fits in my cabinet!)

      • Wouldn't a laptop make a better HTPC? We don't need an i5 with 8GB to play videos. I'm thinking just a basic laptop with added external storage if required?

        • +1

Not really, you have to open them to turn them on and because they tend to prefer the internal display you often have to fiddle with them.
Plus they tend to cost more to buy in the first place and are usually in worse condition.

          • @coxymla: Good points. Ease of use and aesthetics would favor the desktop.

        • Nah ulv chips on laptops are underpowered. My hp x360 has a heart attack trying to play 1440p on youtube

          • @krisspy: That would be a special case where your computer lacks hardware support for the codec. (VP9?)
Normally on a HTPC, the GPU does all the work.

These days, why have Intel chips for a HTPC when a fanless ARM box (or 2) does the front-end job?

The single thread rating is comparable to new processors for most office-style work, the 4-core 4-thread CPU's are comparable to recent mobile i5's and they'll take a GTX 1050ti giving sufficient grunt to run something like the Skyrim S.E. stand alone @ 4K without to much trouble and FHD no problems at all. For anyone just wanting a office PC with bearable rather than competitive game-play with ample power for word processing, browsing and media consumption they get Windows 10 pro -selling ~ $150 atm - and a brick to run it well for an extra $100.

Grandma and Grandad re often not too fussed playing little tricks on Microsoft to get a cheap O.S., but would rather just get a box where 'everything works'.

      • I see now, the market for these is alive and well, thanks for pointing out the relevance. I think I've been using a laptop to do everything for so long. Got rid of the desktops years ago.

        • I've gone the other way and have moved from laptops back to desktops. Have gone through a few laptops where the gpu overheats and because it's soldered into the motherboard, I couldn't swap it out like I can with a desktop. I bought this hp 800 gen 1 brand new 5 years ago for around $800, put in an ssd, and low profile gtx 1050 ti graphics card and it's been able to play everything that I've thrown at it in 1080p.

    • I got an old workstation like this and turned it into an emulation machine.

    • I have an EliteDesk, it's tiny and makes no noise. I run it in the shed so i can use a full size 27" monitor attached to the wall with wireless keyboard/mouse and the unit hidden away. A laptop is not a substitute for what i need, and would be more costly.

It's a EliteDesk 800 G3, Windows 10, i7-770T, 16GB Ram with wifi i got for $420 and you could almost fit it in your pocket.

Not everyone is into online gaming or streaming netflix.
This is perfect for the average home user that just browses the net, uses social media and does some online shopping.
There is one being used alongside me right now… it is NOT noisy at all and a perfect tool for the job without the HN rip off price tag.
What "minimum" specs do you suggest for a home user? Curious…

      • +1

I'm pretty sure it streams Netflix.
Everyday use will be perfect. YouTube, Netflix, FB , internet, word processing

    • This is my main PC. I have i7 4770 with 1650. Runs smooth

Can get a Dell Optiplex 9020 i5-4590 8GB with 500GB HDD for $60 less, pretty sure $249 is just the regular price, no deal here.

6th gen G2 for $271 seems like a better buy.

    • W10 Pro v no OS

      • +2

Licence included though - if you're technically inclined it's simple to install the OS from the MS website

  • OP I am looking for a refurbished PC with i5 6th gen with SSD and OS installed, minimum 8gb ram with HDMI output. Anything available?

  • I don't suppose the W10 Pro licence on this is transferable ?

    • +1

Nope, baked in the uefi bios.

That said; MS wants everyone on 10, no questions asked.

I manage literally hundreds of PC's both business and personal and I've never heard of a licence being cancelled.

What I'm suggesting is $5-$10 on the old eBay for a key, while questionably legal, very probably won't lead you wrong.

  • These run ESX. Quiet 24/7

  • what is the graphics card on this
