Since it’s not mentioned, these are likely 10th generation devices.

A new 11th generation Intel (with Xe graphics) was announced last month and is called the Surface Pro 7+ (minor differences, removable SSD, USB C instead of mini DP, upgraded to 11th gen)

    • Thanks for that. Are the new models available yet? Couldn't find them anywhere

  • Do they come with keyboards?

  • +2

Good find. There is also an 8% Cashrewards for the Microsoft store.

    • Can you get it after buying it?

      • Unfortunately no. Cashback must be activated before the purchase button is clicked.

      • No.

Can also combine with Microsoft AMEX deal :D

Stack with Amex Statement Credits ($600/100 or $400/80): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/601768

    Platinum Intel i7 16gb 256gb: $1959
    Platinum Intel i7 16gb 512gb: $2519

MS want $560 for a 256GB upgrade?!!! That's worse than Apple.

  • I need to upgrade my Surface Pro 4 but damn it's hard to accept a $250 keyboard.

    • Yeah, I got the Surface and I'll wait for a deal on the type cover and pen…

    • +3

Why do you need another keyboard? I am using pro 4's with my 7. Hasn't changed.

Also dont forget trade-in of your pro 4. November 24th they offered me $378.75 for the pro4. Process is pay full price for the pro 7, send pro 4 in to 3rd party, the 3rd party transfers the $ to your paypal. It took 2 months (covid & christmas delays apparently) but I did receive the money. So total cost for my i5 pro 7 was $740.45 (calculation in my deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/584129)

      • I'd prefer to keep it with the Pro 4 when I sell/give it away. But I didn't realise they had a trade-in program, I'll look into that.

Edit: Item value: $157.30, lol nevermind.

        • That sucks, for $153 I wouldn't either. Did fix the keyboard issue for me as there is no cash back on the keyboard anyway, they just wanted the tablet.

      • +1

Wonder if they’ll take my busted SP3. The top of the frame cracked due to heat. It’s already a replacement unit

        • Same , SP3. anybody knows if ant trade in deals ?

  • I'm still rocking my HP Spectre X2 i5/8GB/128GB from 2016 that I bought for $800 with included keyboard and pen! Absolutely the build quality is higher on the Surface, but man they're expensive.

  • Is the i5 8gb 128gb a good buy for around $1100 after cashback?

  • It was 979 a month ago. Is it better to wait for that deal again?

    • For the i3 maybe. Not the i5.

    • i5 8gb was $1169.

  • +1

If you have a SP4 or SP5 with screen flicking issue, call or online chat with Microsoft to get some discount to purchase a new one.

Last time I got $330 discount.

    • +1

and if it hasn't failed then you might get slightly more via trade-in. Got $378 in november for my working SP4. See my above comment.

      • its now only $153 as per comment above. :-(

If you want a tablet for media, iPad Pro is better.
If you want a laptop for work, there are plenty of cheaper thin 14” alternatives
If you want something for gaming, then the ASUS Ryzen RTX 14-15” are better.

This product is design for the 2nd reason above (laptop for work) but it is overprice in this bracket when we also add in the keyboard.

    • This fits more into a 2 in 1 category which I’d say is different to the laptop category. Mostly because you can remove the keyboard out of the way super easily and use it for drawing. It’s very good for school use, university students like them, but not the cost.

      • I'm not sure why the op was negged as it's a valid point. An iPad air provided a much nicer drawing experience and adding in the keyboard would give you a decent office experience.

        • +2

I didn’t neg. Though depending on work environment, you may get away with an iPad. But I find they mess up a lot of fonts in other languages for PDF’s, and just seem to have limitations when you’re doing more complex stuff.

And then if you’re doing certain work with software that doesn’t run on iOS or even macOS, you’d be screwed.

If you want a tablet for media, iPad Pro is better.

But you can only do incidental work on iPads if you also want to use it for work (e.g. review/read docs, mark ups, whiteboarding, video conferencing…).

If you want a laptop for work, there are plenty of cheaper thin 14” alternatives

All of them are inferior in design, practicality and generally heavier. Also MS-designed software and hardware generally means 0 firmware or performance worries

If you want something for gaming, then the ASUS Ryzen RTX 14-15” are better.

Ain't no one buying a surface pro for gaming. This is like saying "Buy an Xbox".

          ….

iPad air provided a much nicer drawing experience and adding in the keyboard would give you a decent office experience.

If you have ever used MS office on an iPad you'll know you can't really do enterprise-level work on it (again only really incidental work). You can't plug an iPad into another screen, have a truly multiple open window workflow, effectively use file hierachies/sharedrives/sharepoints etc. Its just not enough to replace your daily driver. A great companion though

      • Good point.
This fits into a new category - 2 in 1.
Good for those who prefer Windows in the Office over iOS.

    • +2

my reasons why I bought a Surface Pro:

      • save on hand carry luggage weight when travelling (pre-COVID)
      • easy to replace keyboard (in case it breaks)
      • Windows OS
      • fanless device

the touch screen and high resolution are just bonuses

  • Is there any option to buy gift cards using Amex deal and use them for the purchase .Share your thoughts if someone has managed to do

  • Do i buy a second hand surface pro or get the surface pro 7?
I just want it to run microsoft excel.
Converting alot of paper forms into excel sheets with macros so needs a bit of go.
Then just fill out the forms on the go rather than printing. Then adding back into a summary sheet.

    • As always depends on your budget.

      • Well i could afford to buy the Platinum Intel i7 16gb 1TB: $2999

But totally overkill for what i plan to use it for.

        • An i5 is enough for your needs. The only question is if you use online cloud storage, coz 256Gb would be enough. If you want to put a bit of media etc on it, then 512 would be better.

Oops, those configs available are pretty limiting. I always say 8Gb ram isn’t enough, would much prefer 16Gb nowadays.

    • I have been looking the second hand market for ages. You can find the surface 6 for $800 or so. I rather more spending a bit more and get the new one

      • Yeah I have been on the hunt for a while.
Found a 6 for $800 with keyboard and pen.
Dont know if I need either though.

        • offered $600 and got it so guess I did need the type cover and pen

  • Not sure this is a great deal given the Surface 7 machines have been available since late 2019.

    In Nov 2019 - I purchased the Surface Pro 7 - Black, Intel Core i5, 8GB, 256GB for AU$1,453.6 (that price didn't include GST)
So $1600 including GST. This is the exact same price as they are trying to get now.

At the time they had the 10% shopback cashback (on the pre-gst price which came through), and also the AMEX statement credit.

If I was to buy now, I would get the Surface Pro 7+ and get the entry level machine with 8GB. Switch out the HDD to something bigger when required.

    • can you replace the HDD? I thought these are soldered in or something.

      • +1

The new Surface Pro 7+ has a removable SSD.

  • Thanks OP, I’m getting along fine with my Surface Pro 4 and I need LTE. Will wait for 7+ pricing to be sane, looking forward to USB-C should have happened years ago…

BTW surface suits many who want a smaller touchscreen PC for some fraction of work/home use and can benefit from FBE salary packaging where this gets classified as a FBE free tablet. So we buy pre-tax and employer refunds GST.

    • what is FBE?

      • +1

        Fringe Benefits Exemption, I'm guessing.

  • Has anybody else had issues with this tracking to Cashrewards?

My first purchase did not and just made another tonight and didn’t either
