It would have been much better if it had 2 sticks of 8GB RAM.

Hey mate, bought this laptop around xmas for the missus @ $773.16. I bought another 8gb stick off ebay for it and I rate it performance wise. If you want to save yourself an additional $63.63 off your price use the coupon code "LOVEKEANU", that will get the purchase price down to $845.36

    • Whats better? 4core 8 threads or 6 core 6 threads??

      • +1

        It depends on the cores.
For example 4c/8t of 3000 gen is a lot different to 6c/6t of 4000 gen.

And it also depends on your needs. Some programs require as many cores as possible, others require more potent but fewer cores.

Your best bet is to look up some reviews of the specific processors you’re trying to compare and see how they each do at the tasks you’re likely to be doing.

      • 6 cores is just comparing these numbers.

Hyperthreading will optimise pending instructions to execute. That's good, but they appears as 2x the cores.

Single threaded applications won't use more than onc thread or vCPU.

However these numbers are mostly meaningless in isolation CPUs have a lot of differences in optermisations and ISA. Encoding video on a 10 year old GPU at 3ghz would likely be slower than a 1 year old CPU at 1.8ghz.

In a laptop power usage and thermal mechanics means a lot more, you might never be able reach the max clock speed.

I am using one and the screen is beautiful. Don't look at the information.

    • +1

I got this laptop for a slightly dearer price in Jan from the eBay sale.

I do wish the screen was brighter, didn't know they make screens with such low brightness. Whites are okay, but other colours make it difficult to use this full time for work.

  • Hi,

How hard / easy to upgrade the 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive to say 1GB?

  • I am using this notebook. It's fast and with beautiful screen. Please ignore the information about the 45% NTS 220 ntis etc. It's good but maybe not for gamer.

However, just buy yourself a proper camera if you are going to use video conferencing. The camera is just not usable. I am so disappointed with Dell. It's a disgrace!

Also, it's lightweight but it feel cheap for some reasons. Hope it last.

Please ignore the information about the 45% NTS 220 ntis etc

The info seems pretty useful for people that have to work outdoors, makes thr laptop functionally useless for them.

      • I agree with you just don't know anyone who uses a laptop outside, tablet maybe but not a laptop.

        • I often use a laptop outside. Many people I work with and know often work outside.

  • What sort of gaming can we realistically do with this setup?

  • Is this dell better value than this Lenovo deal https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge/…

    • +1

You're making a bunch of sacrifices going for that lenovo but it is hard to pass on the price. Things to consider, the cpu is using older zen+ architecture, slower ram and half the ssd storage.

      • Thanks, all the varieties are confusing

  • Does this have removable ram?

  • I am looking for a lightweight laptop to surf the internet and online trade. Not a gamer so this was looking great but that 1.7kg is surprising

  • Anyone know what the batter is in this? Cant seem to see on the website.

  • Not really a deal, only $818.22 at ebay Dell sale.

  • Can anyone pls let me know if Inspirons have good built? I’m keen on durable Latitude models but the price for high performance systems is still hard to justify IMO. My order of priorities is: built > performance > price.

    • +4

Latitude is the premium business grade line and is roughly equivalent to the XPS (premium consumer grade line).

Inspiron is the entry-level consumer grade line which is further divided into 3 different sub-models or series:
      https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/sc/laptops/insp…

      • 3000 Series - budget (cheapest build quality & components).
      • 5000 Series - mid-range.
      • 7000 Series - high-end (includes some premium components like alloy chassis, and hi-tech features like Thunderbolt 3).

The Inspiron 15 5505 is part of the mid-range 5000 Series. If you want better build quality in consumer line, go for the Inspiron 7000 Series or XPS. Otherwise look for Latitudes on the Dell Outlet: https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/work/shop/laptops-tablets

      • Cool, thanks mate! I heard the Vostro is a mid-range model between Inspiron and XPS for consumer-grade line. Do you have any comments regarding Vostro in comparison with Inspiron?

        • +1

Vostro is the entry-level business grade line (also includes 3000, 5000 & 7000 Series models). It's roughly equivalent to the Inspiron.

  • Comments on 4700u vs 4500u for the Inspiron 15?

    • I phurchased 4700u eventually, did consider both, $117 extra to get about 10% performance+.

      • Yeh I did too but not sure if I needed it or could have saved the $ haha

eBay doesn't shit until Feb/March though….and the website is in stock

        • Bought my current laptop 7 years ago, I figured $17 each year extra sounds ok for me aha.
On ebay says delivery on March but I got email says mine will be dispatched tomorrow.

          • @noodlefan: Ahh nice. I'll wait. Haha Im a Mac user and needed to use windows for a month for one particular program. I'll probably end up selling it within a year knowing my hatred for windows haha. But if it runs well, I might keep it for photo/video

          eBay needs more fibre.

Silly question but considering for the wife - does the caps lock button have a light or at least designated to the right corner?

    (I know, I know..but its a must have)

    • +1

Look through the pics. there's one with a black dot on the capslock key, assume that's an LED.

      • Woops missed that pic, yep looks like an LED. Thanks

    • +3

      Use keyboard leds instead.

A word of caution, I bought an Inspiron 5502 a couple of months ago and long story short - managed to strip 4 screws while undoing them in an attempt to upgrade the RAM and yes I was using the correct size screw driver bit. It turned out that 3 of the 4 errant screws were over tightened (by Dell).

    • thx so much for the heads up
