    nice :)

  • Seems like pick up only for the SD cards and still have to await confirmation about stock before picking it up.

So.. anyone has anything to say about these cards? freakishly cheap for class 10..

  • +17

it's a good deal, but I'm sure in no mood for going to MSY for a loooong time(if at all!).

Is it just for me or anyone else experienced the quite rude behaviour at MSY (Ultimo)?

    1. I wanted to buy a Kingston SD card and teh sales guy was trying to sell me Patriot SD card. When I said I want thekingston one, he said he doesnt have them, When I pointed to the ones just behind him, he said that one is "already sold"! When I pointed out there are over 6 of them (among all the other SD cards) guy is telling me in his system they are not available for sale(without even checking the system that is!). When I asked him why he doesnt want to sell me something which is obviously for sale, other guy butt in and said "didnt you understand what the man said? IT'S NOT FOR SALE!". Not sure if this is acceptable for anyone else, but for me, No Thank You!

    2. Went to by an LCD Monitor, in MSY website under vendor promotion it's listing the price but is saying "come in for a special deal". went there, shop guy refuse to give anything other than what is the normal listed price. When mentioned what is listed in their website, he told me, I dont know about that this is what I can give take it or leave it.

About the Patriod SD card; it works for some, it doesnt work for others.. which is why I didnt want to buy that. Endup buying a Sandisk

you are right, the ppl working in their shops are simply just losers, that's all.

    • +1

That's just unacceptable. Next time get their names and post your experience on their facebook wall. That way you're sure to get a good response.

    • +3

My experiences are similar. MSY - not for the faint-hearted..

    • +1

seriously…. you're not paying for the service. you're paying for their prices. grow a pair and put up with it, or get over it if you get bad service.

      • +2

Agree with you, not for the faint-heated. =D

      • +8

wow! no wonder they can go on doing the same thing.. :D
as long as people like you lap up anything for $10 they have no reason to change..

      • +5

You are wrong as they are over stepping the line of being poor service to being rude and disrespectful. No for me.

    • +4

MSY prices are good but customer service is a joke, at HarveyNorman the service it good but most of the time the prices are a joke. Mix and match people. Oh and here is a guide to shopping at MSY for the newbs here
      http://ozsoapbox.com/melbourne/newbie-guide-how-to-shop-at-m…
But in all fairness my local one is not that bad, but whatever you do just make sure you don't question the knowledge of the dude at the counter.

    • +1

I like MSY. It has a learning curve. Just landing up at MSY became pointless a while ago, they don't have stock for more than half the things listed on the price list. But they put up a good online order system. Place an order, you get an email saying stuff is ready for pick up, walk in, pay, leave. Painless.
The 'already sold' ones were probably for someone who was smart enough to order first. You really think it is strange that stock is already reserved for someone? Computer shops are not supermarkets, keeping stock for long loses you money. And you have no idea how stocktake and inventory works.

      • WTF?!??! Their online ordering system actually works?

I use to be a MSY regular from when the original owner ran it from the first store in Malvern.. was fantastic then, but up until 1 or 2 years ago I gave up as each time I went got the typical Out-Of-Stock line… If I really want something from MSY then I email a day or two before hand and reserve if lucky even then out of stock.. So instead of wasting time i just check best prices at other stores Im willing to pay $5 more to get something same day.

        • For stock availability I never had a problem with MSY Auburn where I usually go. I usually just email them with what I want and they just email me back in an hour or two or next day if its after hours. I usually just put on more than one item in case they are out of stock and just remove the unwanted items when purchasing. Gives me time to organise alternatives or other stores when items are not in stock.

One time I wasn't sure which video card came with the low profile bracket, so the sales person let me check all the different models they had in stock and choose the one that did.

Now there online system has gotten worse. You have to log in before you can view stock availability. As before I used to sometimes go in on a whim after checking stock status and always found items in stock on arrival at store. Not given the out of stock reply.

Just don't complain when they tell you stock in not available when its clearly visible to you. Its because there computer shows all sock has been reserved for pickup.

      Now, let's calm down & reconsider…

      Consider:

      1. MSY take advance orders from your comfortable home computer office

      2. MSY very likely HAD such orders ("hold requests") on all items you could see on the shelf

      3. Whether you're on a date or at a retail shop, NO MEANS NO.

So, why try to push past a polite "No" to get what you want? Accept it & go elsewhere.

Yes, they COULD have take the time to shift "held items" elsewhere (after EVERY Hold Request comes in), but their online Hold-list makes this unnecessary, & MSY is a busy place, so WHY should they use their time just to move stuff around …while customers are waiting to buy?!?

Their prices are low BECAUSE they run the place "lean"… If you need to be cuddled by store clerks, and are willing to pay the price, try H-N. I think you'll spend heaps more $$$. It's your choice…

      Consider:

      1. You advertise your car for sale.

      2. Someone wants to buy, & they leave a deposit, before going off to get the $$$ to pay the rest with, & you agree to hold the car against their deposit for 2 hours.

      3. Minutes after they leave, someone else (who you invited BEFORE the deposit was left) rocks up to look at the car.

      4. They see your car & want to buy it & - since they have all the cash in hand - they INSIST that you sell it to them.

How would YOU feel & react, ie, if they wouldn't take your No for an answer?

Put yourself into the MSY clerk's spot; their options might be:

O-1: Sell to you, but lose their job (by ignoring another customer's Hold & MSY policy to hold ordered items)

O-2: Not sell to you, but maybe experience your wrath, because you didn't consider the above (part 1)

If YOU had uni fees to pay (or a child to feed), which option would YOU choose?

What were you thinking, mate? :-/

PS In fairness, sometimes I have to repeat myself at MSY) & PLENTY of other stores) to be understood, often due to the level of English skills of the clerk; so, I just
slow down, maybe speak a bit more clearly, use simpler words (& maybe point) in shorter sentences - as you would with a younger person, who needs you to do that - to make the communications happen. That's a price I'm happy to pay.

And, somehow, Life goes on… :-)

      • tl;dr

    • +1

Also I have seen when there is a long line, and when their mates are right at the bottom of the line, they will just ignore the line and call their mates or they just walk straight in.
This happened a few times when I was there, but there was one time this old guy, who was waiting to be severed for several minutes and this mob walked in, the mob saw him and still ignored the old guy who was next to be served went straight to the counter, and the bunch of idiots behind the counter also ignored him and started serving the mob, losers! - I'll pay more for someone who treats their customers like customers.

1 : Agree that is unacceptable but I feel you just made that story up. I never heard of or witnessed something like that from MSY. And I have shopped at MSY for many years (difference branches too).

2 : I am a picky buyer too. That's why I call and check with them first before I drive there.

I do have a love/hate relationship with MSY too.

      • they are not a general department store. They are NOT for everyone. They are a specialist PC store. ( I love that).
      • their staff are trained to sell only and they are often very busy. ( I hate that)
      • the worse thing you can ask them is "what is a good (insert name) for me?). They don't know how to give advise for the "right" product for your need since there are too many choices. It will simply take them too long to find the answer and so they won't. After all, it's the buyer's job to know what he wants to buy. (neutral on this).
      • the majority of issues that I witness other people have with them is perspective. Most of their staff (if not all) live in their own little "PC hardware" world and is disconnected from reality. Even though they speak English, normal folks won't understand them and vice versa.
  • what store was this?

  • +1

I would like to see what the MSY rep has to say about their staff being so painful to deal with. Whole bunch of staff at MSY Ultimo are undeserving of their jobs.

  • +5

They're being paid peanuts to work in shitty conditions, can't be helped.

Though I always avoid MSY now, plenty of other good alternatives.

  • Where is the LG G606 Wireless Mouse now $7 (Normal price $19)?? got a link for it??

  • +1

If only OW stocked Patriot Cards

  • DON'T EVER Buy any product with this BRAND!! i had 2 memory cards with this PATRIOT brand, and the quality very very BAD! memory sometimes lost, it said 16Gb but after 8GB it said full & failed to write, transfer rate very very BAD!!!

    • Both were bad!? Wow, that's just sad luck. I've have two 32gb class 10 sd cards and they both work perfectly fine for me. I have two 32GB usb's as well, first one a 2year old usb2.0 and a newer usb 3.0 and they both work perfectly fine as well - never crashed. Every brand, without exception, will have a few that will fail, it seems like you were just seriously unlucky with yours.

    • +2

Did you buy them from MSY (or any bricks-n-mortar store) or from eBait? Lots of fake "branded" SD cards out there so maybe you got two of those…

    • That hasn't been my experience with Patriot SD's I have 3 and they have performed flawlessly

    • I guess you must have been very upset with the cards if it motivated you to join OzBargain today and comment. I think that you didn't get genuine brand cards though, especially if they were both having these problems.

  • damn i just bought a 16gb sandisk ultra (30mbps) at $27 :(

    • +1

Where did you get the sandisk for that price? Thats the cheapest ive heard. I'd take the sandisk over the patriot.

      • how bout fake sandisk?

some of these cards were known not to work with the nikon d7000, its actually a camera problem I think because a few cards dont work with that camera and all other brands ok.
(probably due to the fact that camera has dual slots)

  • +3

I have had my fair share of MSY guys being rude and smart asses to me,

I am not siding with them, but you gotta think of what they have to deal with, i mean while you guys must have a clue on computers and technology,

some of the customers they get must be total noobs with zero experience with technology and go there because the prices are so cheap and ask like the silliest questions, and after awhile they would get to a stage where its just easier treating everyone like idiots to make their life easier

well that is my thoughts on why they are such dicks anyway

    sorry for the swearing

    • +1

Yeah the attitude is uncalled for its like MSY job requirements: massive ego, no empathy, egotistic need apply. When I am in Sydney I dreed those visits to ultimo (that's if I can't get it from J&W computers)

  • I buy at pcdiy because they offered the same price with good service.

  • Why are these comments directed only at Msy? I know 2 stores at least whose staff are well known for being far more rude and abusive - not Msy. Look you give anyone any power anymore, and they will abuse it - and computer shops that sell cheap components reckon they're doing you a favour. The people with the power to dispense those components get off on controlling to whom they choose to dispense those components - they reflect our facebook environment. Retail is far from professional these days - happy christmas to those MSY staff who put up with this unfair criticism.

  • The product description is interesting "Name: Patriot 16GB SD Class10 SDHC (Promotion price $15 on 13/08 ONLY)".

Guess it has been on a one day special before.

  • Cheers op, just ordered one online. About MSY Stores…. it really depends which store you go to. Years ago i went to a Sydney store and let me tell you that was an experience i don't want to repeat. Now i live in QLD and visit the Ipswich store which is either empty or has 1-2 people waiting for service. The guy at the counter is actually very nice and polite… and the best part for me, it's like a 5 minute walk from my house :)

  • +9

MSY have great prices, but they are like the soup nazi of IT service.

It's all part of the experience..

  • I found MSY's service OK in Queensland - prefer them to Umart as there is someone available to answer my questions. Staff in umart seems to be logistics personnel

Talking about the Patriot brand - I bought a 32GB USB thumb drive from them a few months ago. Yesterday when I unplugged it from the photocopier (where there were no 'eject' buttons or anything to unplug USB devices), all my data was lost. Once I plugged it back to my laptop, it asked if I want to format it.

Good that I didn't have anything important in the USB drive. I will never put important stuff in unbranded USBs

    • +1

      technically it was Patriot branded

    • thats a faulty with the photocopier not the usb stick, it sometimes happens with our new canons regardless of brand of usb

  • I have heard so many horror 'bad customer service yaddayadda' things abt MSY but personally have never experienced 'bad' service per say at my local (balcatta) store. The guys there are really nice and helpful…to say the least. Been shopping there for over two years now… I've had some horrible customer service experiences at HN, JB, Dicksmith, Good Guys, etc.
    Just my 2c.

I'm using the Patriot 32gb SDHC in my D90 right now without any problems. And an 8gb thumb drive in the car stereo..no problems there either.

  • +1

Patriot is a bloody good brand, their products will not break down.
its the kind of memory stick or now SD card you'd steal from the university library.

As for MSY, GO IN GO OUT. That's all you want to do.

  • +1

This is how you order at MSY:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ3AOmZ2fps

    • +2

YOU: "I think you forgot my customer service?"
MSY: "You want der customar servit?"
      YOU: "Yes please"
      MSY: "Twee dollah!"
      YOU: "What??"
      MSY: "No Skywim for you!"
      YOU: "Ahhh my knee…"

On a more related note, been using the 32GB Patriot Class10 since the last MSY promotion- all good so far

    • LOL…..kinda like that for some people

as for me, I can "talk" to them so my experiences are not so bad.

    • Hahahaha, I'm surprised I didn't make that connection before.

  • If you want customer service, you don't belong in msy shopper category, go to harvey norman. They don't like dumb cheapskates.
They get paid peanuts and don't want to deal with peanut brained person who don't know what they want.
    I've had no problems

    • nvm

  • Mouse is out of stock in queensland dam it.

  • Got the patriot half an hour ago ago at MSY Fyshwick, plenty of stock from what I saw and they were just about to close

  • wow.. the stories are true.. I did what I asked so no issues

  • Never herd patriot sdhc had these issues quite the opposite. Would trust patriot brand before team or a-ram or laser which are cheaply made. Btw if it was a REAL patriot it has a 5 yr waranty so if it did have issues they'd replace it. I think these ppl saying patriot are dodgy have got fake cards from hong kong online stores with no waranty.

    • And on msy.. They are generally pretty help full at least to me when u know what ur looking for. Mind u I work in IT industry so I know abt what I'm purchasing. They arnt trained to deal with noobs who have no idea abt hardware or pc stuff and hence I would understand y they couldn't be stuffed explaining every little thing. My advise is do a little research abt what u want to buy before so u dnt waste their time with noobish questions. Or go to harvey Norman and pay extra and one of their idiots to give u lesson in technology for dummies. Like anything u Get what u pay for

      • +1

no offense but go easy on the leetspeak, aren't and arnt are not too different

        • Thanks donk

MSY should put out a large banner in bulk and red.

    MSY Commandments:

    1. Thou shalt not ask for advice.
    2. Thou shalt listen and not to talk back.
    3. Thou shalt answer promptly when being questioned.
    4. Thou shalt not admits to be a noob.
    5. Thou shalt only paid cash.
    6. Thou shalt not question the hygienic status of the premise.
    7. Thou shalt not question the poor availability of stock.
    8. Thou shalt not request assistance to upload goods bought into vehicle.

    care to add some more?

    • U missed: 9: thou shall get a life! Saddo

  • This is a MSY customer complaint section? Lol
In all seriousness, great bargain and got 5 :D

  • Speeds are not class 10. Did a crystaldiskmark and got only 8 read/9 write.

    Whirlpool says otherwise though

Got one of these exact cards from MSY a month or so ago to use in my Canon 600D DSLR. It's OK for taking photos, I just haven't yet tried RAW in burst mode.

Video is not so good though, shooting in 1080p 24fps I can get up to around 20 seconds depending on surrounding noises and how fast I move the camera. 1080p 50fps and 720p you can forget, get to about 2 - 3 seconds.

As of two days ago, two photos I took can not display on the camera, it just has a question mark for the thumbnail - bit of a worry. I have since ordered a Sandisk Extreme, hope that performs better.

    SO to recap, this card:

Photos = OK (not sure about the reliability of the card yet though)
Video = sucks, get something else.

    • IMO what do you recommend instead?

      • This patriot is my first card, so I can't recommend anything unfortunately.

I've ordered a Sandisk Extreme which I'm hoping will arrive tomorrow morning, so we'll see about that.

My friend uses a Sandisk Extreme Pro in a 550D and he loves it.

        • how much data is the video chewing up per second? im pretty sure it should be under 10mb/s - something else maybe the problem.

Although I did get a card today - I think the stock has changed from last time when it was also on special for $15.
I got one last time, the write speed was 13.5mb/s
This time only 10.5mb/s - which is still class 10 btw.

  • Hey voter1, can't reply to you for some reason.

Anyway, not sure of the actual bitrate of the video itself, all I know is that the louder the outside noise and/or the more information I'm recording the less time I get. if I record in 50 fps I'm lucky to get 5 seconds, in 25 and 24fps around 20 seconds.

    I'm 100% it's the card, it's a common problem amongst DSLR users.

I would love to do a test on my current card, do you need a special reader or will any do?

    • hi, what I mean is how big is the video per second.
eg the video cuts out after 5 sec and the resultant video is 40mb. Therefore its 8mb/s which should be ok on class 10.
Im pretty sure that no camera at this point actually has a video bitrate higher than 10mb/s. So it might actually be a compatability problem than card problem.

With the card readers, cheaper ones have artifical limits, so you just have to try all of them or just compare cards as a baseline.

oh btw, you cant reply to messages more than 3 deep.
