Some of my 10W LED downlight flickers randomly (connected to electronic dimmers). Are these flicker free?

    • +2

Mine flickered too until the electrician changed to leading edge dimmers, from trailing edge. Dunno.
      All OK now.

      Hi Klang,

As per Karen07's comments, the type and quality of your dimmer/switch may affect the flickering of LED lights, particularly older dimmers which are not designed to control loads below around 20W. As such, they can sometimes struggle to dim a small number of low power LED lights.

With the display light in our store, it has been operating for a couple of years without any signs of flickering yet. So we're pretty confident in the qualities of these. In any case, you are well covered by the product's 3 year replacement warranty too. :)

      • Not always, but the flicker can be caused by the off peak ripple/pulse. You wouldn't see that during business hours.

        • Actually the flickers occurs randomly - daylight and night. Weird.

If I was to purchase some one these I’d go the tricolour. In my experience with cheap downlights they always stop working soon; either start flickering, dim or turn off completely. The other colours selectable work so I use them in the bathrooms

For reference the brand I’m referring to is Melec. Very poor quality.

    • Is that Melec or Arlec?

      • I think this is the actual one.

        https://www.melec.com.au/product/ml-mr-multi/

Our new apartment complex had them fitted and within the first year we had 5 go out on us and more since then. A lot of people had it worse. We had them send us a bunch of replacements and they were also faulty, some were even broken in 2 despite the packaging being intact lol.

        • Oh OK, many brands on the market it seems, of variable quality.
Mine are tri-colour and "fingers crossed" they are fine.

      Hi johnnytran,

Thanks for your comment, that's a shame to hear about your experience with the Melec downlights. We do not stock those as we have tested them ourselves with varying results and have generally heard some pretty nasty stuff about them too.

We do wholeheartedly recommend the quality of the Mercator Eko 9W Tricolour Downlights too as per adgnetworks' comment above yours. And as you have pointed out, the selectable colors makes it a breeze to have them set up throughout your house with different color temperatures while keeping to the same model.

We do also vouch for the quality of the Epic 8W LED 3000K Downlights too and they do provide good value for those considering to buy in bulk (the small cost difference for each unit really adds up!) and are happy with the same color temperature throughout the house.

  • Hi Rep,
Have you got any quality 13w Tricolour dowlights on sale?
    Thanks

    • Hi ja912son,

This is probably our best 13w Tricolour downlight.

Is there any reason why you specifically want a 13w downlight? We ask because the wattage does not necessarily determine the brightness of the LED lights these days. Typically, people only specifically request higher wattage downlights for the physically larger units to fit their pre-existing cutouts when replacing their lights. For example, this model fits 120mm cutouts whereas the average cutout size is only 90mm.

      • Thanks for the reply.
Good to know that. I need to replace a few traditional batten holder lights with LED downlights. I'll buy 9w instead. What would be the cutout size for a normal batten holder?
Also is there any plug base you would recommend?
        Many thanks

        • No worries,

There isn't really a standard cutout size for a normal batten holder… Just depends how the electrician decided to do it last. Most likely the holes will need to be expanded to fit in the new downlights.

Plug base wise, any 413 plug bases will be fine, they're all about the same. Eg. heaps of choices at bunnings

          • @BDLT: Cheers!
A quick question about Eko 9w and Epic 8w, I noticed Eko has 100 degrees beam angle and Epic got 120 degrees. Does that produce a huge difference in reality?
Also, is Eko 9w a recessed downlight or almost flat? Do Eko 9w ones come with a separate LED driver or it's integrated? Can't really tell from the photo on your website.

            • @ja912son: You're very welcome,

100 and 120 degrees are both a very impressive range for downlights, depending on the height of your ceiling, the Epics may offer a slightly greater spread, but as the Ekos are brighter overall, the difference in reality shouldn't be too noticeable once the light rays bounce around the room. The older style LED spotlights and downlights typically only offered between 60-90 degrees.
Both units are almost flat against the ceiling once installed, and both units has the LED drivers integrated.

@BDLT: Thanks Rep. Bought 19 Ekos to get free shipping.

  • 12w or 9w? Which one is better in terms of brightness?

    • I need to replace 11 yellow downlights with white or tri color.

      • Hi aussie-bargainer,

As stated in an earlier comment to ja912son, the wattage does not necessarily determine the brightness of the LED lights these days. Typically, people only specifically request higher wattage downlights for the physically larger units to fit their pre-existing cutouts when replacing their lights. For example, this model fits 120mm cutouts whereas the average cutout size is only 90mm.

The brightness of LED lights are now determined by the lumens count. The greater the count, the brighter the light is.

If you are looking to replace your yellow downlights but are unsure which color will work better for you, We'd strongly recommend the Mercator Eko 9W Tricolour Downlights to have the ability to switch the colors around until you find one that suits.

  • Hi @BDLT:, can your deal for the Mercator Eko 9W Tricolour be reinstated? Looking to update the lights across my whole house, so need ~42 downlighting. Cheers
