  • It would be cheaper to pick up a King or Suehiro whetstone, and learn the technique. Even a 1000K stone can get you scary scarp.

I'm pretty sure this is marketed at people who don't wish to learn any technique, and just want a sharp knife.

Unfortunately, they will ruin your knives and should be avoided in most situations. They tend to remove a lot of material and in a very uneven manner.

A cheap 12$ Chinese stone is far ahead of such an expensive product. And the technique for whetstones definitely looks harder than it actually is.

        • do you know which king whetstone would be the best? i've seen a couple of comments on it but not sure where to start

I bought a $99 knife block (discounted from $600 or something, lol) and a knife sharpener like this a decade ago. Worked fine, knives never slip, always sharp as hell, takes 2 seconds to sharpen and I simply don’t have to care. Only issue has ever been the bread knife.

My parents have a knife and cheap pull through sharpener they got as a wedding present over 40 years ago. Still use it. While a fair chunk of the knife has gone over the years, it still cuts and still takes no time at all to sharpen.

It’s really hard to ruin a knife. It has one purpose, chop stuff. If you’ve spent thousands on your knives then sure, but for most people? Just go with whatever is convenient.

Cannot agree more. Those things should be really used on those cheap knifes used in quick and dirty ways, then the price simply defeat the purpose as why would someone buy such a expensive sharpener for cheap knives?
